Yeah, I'm just gonna bring. Yeah, I'm just gonna come stay at your place and
Steve:bring my. My boyfriend and fucking your
Steve:bed.
Steve:You mind if we fucking the
Steve:loft, where you're gonna come home and sleep?
Steve:Okay, I'll change the sheets.
Leif:They didn't change.
Steve:They didn't change the sheets.
Leif:Hey, upper east siders and all you scandal loving listeners out
Leif:there, you just tuned into the non judging breakfast
Leif:pod, where the coffee is strong, the
Leif:waffles are freshen, and the gossip is hotter than
Leif:ever. My name is Leif, and I'm, your seasoned
Leif:gossip girl veteran.
Steve:And I'm Steve, your newbie, your
Steve:greenhorn. You're, I don't know, Leif. What do you call
Steve:the new kid on the block in gossip girl terms?
Leif:Well, Steve, we're off to season two, so I think
Leif:you're ready to be upgraded to minion status.
Steve:Oh, wow. That's. That is,
Steve:joyous now that Blair seems to be getting right
Steve:back on top. So, it's a good time to be,
Steve:moving upward.
Leif:Sounds good.
Steve:Yeah. Take that, Jenny.
Steve:All right, so here's the deal,
Steve:folks. We have
Steve:a whole podcast we're doing here. Here's the deal,
Steve:folks. Leap is a gossip girl veteran,
Steve:and I'm diving in for the first time. And we,
Steve:together, we're your dynamic duo, bringing you all
Steve:the romance, drama, and
Steve:sometimes questionable fashion choices of this
Steve:iconic 2007 series.
Leif:That's right. Each week, we'll be going through one episode
Leif:at a time, taking a deep dive. we're going to analyze
Leif:all the parallels, obscure references, and,
Leif:of course, the couture catastrophes. And
Leif:also we're going to take a look at some of the behind the scenes gossip and some
Leif:stories from fandom along the way.
Steve:And since we're all about inclusivity here at the non judging
Steve:breakfast pod, there is always room for you at the non
Steve:judging breakfast table. So please
Steve:grab a cup of coffee or a mimosa or some of
Steve:Nate and Chuck's special medicine, and let's get into
Steve:this episode.
Leif:By the time you guys are listening to this, we'll probably have already gone on our
Leif:second trip. But, we just, as of the recording,
Leif:had our first yak life trip of the season.
Leif:That was fun. We had a new record. 36
Leif:paddlers with 35 boats.
Steve:That's awesome.
Leif:Exciting. Yeah. Up on the upper Delaware river,
Leif:and I was, right on the border of New York and
Leif:Pennsylvania. So one side river is New York, one side is
Leif:Pennsylvania, and there's a couple
Leif:of friends of the pod there, we had Shannon, who was
Leif:a guest in episode 17, and I found
Leif:out my other friend Will is actually a listener. So shout
Leif:outs to Will.
Steve:All right, nice. Thanks, Will.
Leif:Shout out to Will.
Steve:yeah, we actually play d and d with some of the other
Steve:folks that were there. I was really excited because
Steve:I, killed Dan this week
Steve:in our d and d game. And it's,
Steve:you know, as a dm, I, don't ever really
Steve:set out to kill people, but it's so satisfying
Steve:when it happens. And, you know, I had a.
Steve:I had a gollum just grab him and
Steve:then grind the shit out of him, and he got
Steve:free, and they were all excited when
Steve:he landed the killing blow and killed the thing,
Steve:and then it exploded into shrapnel and
Steve:basically just eviscerated him. He made his
Steve:save.
Leif:So, another thing. So after I got back from my trip and I was
Leif:super tired on Monday, I tried once again
Leif:to fill a gap in my teen
Leif:drama knowledge in,
Leif:920. I've never gotten past, like, the 10th
Leif:episode.
Steve:Oh, really? The original?
Leif:Yes, the original.
Steve:Oh, wow.
Leif:And, yes, I watched, like, three episodes.
Leif:And thank God for
Leif:blatant Meestro. Pam Badgley, Blake
Leif:Lively, Ed Westwick, Chase Crawford, Kelly
Leif:Rutherford, Taylor Mumpsey. Cause the acting is
Leif:so bad. It's so bad. Not a tuna.
Steve:I remember when 90210
Steve:1st aired, I
Steve:watched the pilot.
Leif:Yeah, I did watch an episode here or there when it
Leif:was on, and I just never really got into it. I was a little too young
Leif:for it at the time.
Steve:Yeah, I was the exact
Steve:right age for that show. That was. That was
Steve:like the. The early nineties
Steve:when I was in high school and really was the target
Steve:audience for it. I. I remember my
Steve:friend and I, every time
Steve:Kelly would come on screen, we would
Steve:do the, the Lenny from Lenny and
Steve:squiggy, where he would bite the inside of his
Steve:hand because we both thought that she was
Steve:a pretty lady. and you also.
Steve:And you also had Tori spelling, who, like, in a sea
Steve:of bad acting, was the
Steve:vortex that made everybody
Steve:else, like, look better. Yeah, she was
Steve:the vanessa of that show. And
Steve:Andrea, who, like,
Steve:narc. What are you doing here,
Steve:Narcisse? Why is this 40 year old at, this
Steve:beach pit?
Leif:They were all 40, but she.
Steve:She was, like, legit. She. They were all in their twenties, and she
Steve:was in her thirties and also was the one that
Steve:really looked, like, older than the rest of
Steve:them.
Leif:So we are here, to talk about gossip girl today.
Steve:Oh, that's right.
Leif:Season two.
Steve:Season two.
Leif:We made it.
Steve:Yeah, I'm. I'm really
Steve:thrilled. I'm thrilled we
Steve:made it. I'm excited to
Steve:talk about the episode, too.
Leif:The, Caesar premiere is titled
Leif:Summer kind of wonderful.
Steve:Yes. is this our first Corey's
Steve:reference? It's a
Steve:Corey movie. Corey Haim and Corey
Steve:Feldman. I feel like there may have been another
Steve:one in there. Was there a lost boys one or something like
Steve:that?
Leif:Yeah, there's the lost weekend. That wasn't the episode.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Yeah, I think this might be the first one.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. But, yeah, the quarries. I loved
Steve:this movie.
Leif:I've never seen it.
Steve:Oh, I. Yeah, this was one of those.
Steve:I saw it. But then also, it would
Steve:just be on all the time, like one of
Steve:those random Sunday afternoon movies.
Steve:So I've seen this movie
Steve:not in its entirety, over and over
Steve:again, but, like, in bits and pieces.
Steve:I've seen it in its entirety several times.
Leif:So the original air date was September
Leif:1, 2008. Nothing really
Leif:special about that date, but, yeah.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Television without pity. Episode description
Leif:reads awkward. Doesn't just
Leif:describe the tortured syntax of the episode title.
Leif:Serena's playing Nate's beard once again while wailing
Leif:for Dan to come back and tell her exactly who to
Leif:be. Blairs coming close to embarrassing
Leif:herself trying to make Chuck jealous. It's
Leif:working. Dan once again shows up somewhere
Leif:awesome, uninvited and most awkward
Leif:and fantastically awesome of all, Jenny and Eric
Leif:get to party with. Wait for it.
Leif:Tinsley Mortimer. Fuck, yes.
Leif:You know I o m f g x o x o
Leif:u. Gossip girl.
Steve:It's a very enthusiastic,
Steve:endorsement for Tinsley Mortimer,
Steve:who was made fun of in the previous season. Yes.
Leif:And her acting was not too greatness.
Steve:No, it was terrible.
Steve:Robin flipped out, though, because Robin
Steve:recognized who she was immediately.
Leif:Episode written by Josh Saffron.
Leif:Previous episodes from season one were 17
Leif:candles, high society and woman on the
Leif:verge.
Steve:If, I remember correctly, that's b a b. When we both
Steve:gave the same, like, b plus
Steve:minuses.
Leif:Yeah, the first two were. We were right on the line.
Leif:B plus is an a. And then,
Leif:you did a b, and I did a b minus for women on the
Leif:verge.
Steve:Okay. Yeah.
Leif:I did not write down what Shannon gave that episode of.
Leif:I think it was a b. Yeah, I think it was
Leif:directed, by J. Miller Tobin,
Leif:who, previously directed Poison ivy and Blair
Leif:bitch project. Of course. Poison
Leif:ivy, past episode of the season.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:And then we actually did this, apparently, like, Blair
Leif:bitch project even beat. You gave it a b plus. I gave it a b.
Leif:Yeah.
Steve:Yeah. And that's the one that.
Leif:That first episode after the writers strike.
Steve:Yeah, yeah. Okay,
Steve:right.
Leif:That was after, you know,
Leif:everything came out with. Yeah. Chuck and
Leif:Nate. And then Blair
Leif:was, you know, a ruined woman. Yeah.
Leif:At 17.
Steve:And it was also. It was also
Steve:where Georgina started sending messages
Steve:to Serena.
Leif:Yeah.
Steve:So we got our.
Leif:And we got the big tonal shift there.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:But, yeah. Still a decent episode.
Steve:Yeah, it was, except, yeah.
Steve:Yeah, it was the last one before she showed
Steve:up.
Leif:So the episode begins, as always, with a
Leif:gossip girl monologue. Unlike the
Leif:rest of us, sex, lies and scandal never take
Leif:a vacation. Instead, they take the Long island
Leif:expressway and head east to the hamptons.
Leif:Some would say summer is the busiest season.
Leif:Think Park Avenue, but with tennis whites
Leif:and bain du Soleil. The players
Leif:change, but the game remains the same
Leif:as Gossip girl monologues. We see Nate getting hot and heavy
Leif:in a car with a mysterious older woman. We find out
Leif:that this relationship is secret, and Serena is
Leif:covering for Nate. Seems like the woman is the one with
Leif:something to hide.
Steve:Yeah. I mean, Josh Schwartz, way to
Steve:kick the season off with statutory rape.
Leif:Technically, it's legal.
Steve:And, you know, because this whole scene, you have
Steve:that intro that you're like.
Leif:But, yes, it is.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:As we find out later, it is very uncomfortable.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. And at first, you have the, It
Steve:was funny. Cause at first it was like, that's not
Steve:Serena, is it? And then it's like, no, it isn't.
Steve:And then I was like, kinda old. Well,
Steve:but that's par for the course.
Steve:That was my thought was like, she does look older,
Steve:but, like, who? Like, how many people have been
Steve:cast in this show that are like, well.
Leif:I say it was Hollywood. Yeah. You have to be
Leif:between 20 and, like, 32.
Leif:And then you play everything from
Leif:15 to 40.
Steve:Yeah, exactly. And,
Steve:you know, especially when we were just talking about
Steve:Andrea from 90210, and we were. And,
Steve:like, what's his name? That was Jenny's
Steve:boyfriend at the end. Yeah. Asher, who
Steve:looks like he's 25. So to me, it was like,
Steve:oh, yeah. Well, this is probably just some
Steve:teenager.
Leif:That may be a college girl or something.
Steve:Yeah, exactly.
Leif:yes. but then we see Chuck is lounging on the
Leif:beach, apparently back to his old self. He
Leif:convinces his three companions to go top us on what looks
Leif:like a public beach. And Chuck gets a
Leif:blast about Blair coming home from France. Chuck
Leif:momentarily appears to have heart before
Leif:returning, being gross. Serena, alone walks by, looking
Leif:disgusted by Chuck.
Steve:As per usual, he's
Steve:Chuck bass. I mean, it
Steve:was yeah. Chuck being
Steve:everything we've, we've expected him to
Steve:be. So he was just Chuck being
Steve:Chuck.
Leif:Next we see, we find a not so
Leif:lonely boy macking with a cute, random girl in a
Leif:bookstore. Dan is preparing for his future
Leif:job when he changes his name to Joe Goldberg
Leif:Evangeline. A bookstore? What would you. Where you see that
Leif:before?
Steve:actually, I don't know the reference.
Leif:You haven't seen you?
Steve:No, I haven't. I do know. I know that he was in it,
Steve:but, no, I have not actually seen you.
Leif:You really need to watch that.
Steve:Okay, well, I'll get on that.
Steve:it was also just, where did this
Steve:Dan come from? who, like, had no
Steve:friends. Nobody knew him, nobody talked to him. That
Steve:was the whole funny thing about him, was that he was
Steve:a nobody, and now he's just like.
Steve:But again, it was like, you know, you get out of that
Steve:relationship and then you start opening up.
Leif:So, I mean, and there is
Leif:kind of a truth to that. In high school.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Once you date the one hot girl,
Leif:it can open the floodgates.
Steve:Yeah. Well, and you get that confidence, after
Steve:dating someone for the first time,
Steve:there's one of two feelings after a breakup, and
Steve:there's either you get
Steve:the, wow, that really sucks, and
Steve:I'm never going to have that again. But then
Steve:there's also that. No, I'll have something else
Steve:down the line. And when you're in high school, it's a
Steve:lot harder to recognize that.
Leif:And Dan spent the summer interning for a famous
Leif:author, but he is suffering from writer's block before he can go home to
Leif:work his piece, we see Dan kiss a completely
Leif:different girl.
Steve:Jacques. Yeah, he's total
Steve:player now. Like, all right,
Steve:Dan.
Leif:Yeah, he learned from Chuck, I guess.
Steve:Yeah, yeah. And, yeah,
Steve:he. The exact kind of behavior that
Steve:he has. Well, of course, Chuck also
Steve:had other behaviors that upset Dan.
Leif:Yeah, everything's consensual, so.
Steve:Yeah, exactly.
Leif:He's single. It's free to do what he wants. At, Eleanor
Leif:Waldorf's design, little J is being put through her
Leif:paces by Eleanor's second in command, Laurel.
Leif:Laurel scored a best outfit in her lone episode
Leif:in season one, courtesy of yours truly. And
Leif:Jenny tries to put her designs forward, but Laurel just
Leif:laughs in her face. Look out, little J.
Leif:The mean girls in the real world might be worse than the ones in
Leif:Constance.
Steve:Like, so. So, yeah, Laurel was a complete
Steve:asshole. you know, she was really shitty
Steve:toward Jenny. But also, what
Steve:the fuck were you thinking bringing
Steve:your designs to?
Leif:Like, you're like, well, I mean, she is an
Leif:intern. I mean, that's. I would think that's kind of something
Leif:an intern would do. You know, you try to
Leif:learn to. I mean, honestly, working for free, you
Leif:should be getting something out of it.
Steve:Yeah, I just kind of figure, like, my.
Steve:My notion of unpaid
Steve:internships like, that are, like, you're
Steve:sewing hems and, like, sorting buttons like
Steve:they had her doing and not. You're like, you're not
Steve:here. Like, you're here to learn not
Steve:to get. Not to get
Steve:somewhere at the same time.
Leif:I think this was pretty close to the same time
Leif:when the devil wears Prada came out. So, like,
Leif:the bitch fashionista stare at
Leif:all the rage then.
Steve:Yeah, and I get that. And, I mean, they've laced that
Steve:throughout this from. From the start. You know,
Steve:Eleanor is not. Is not a pleasant
Steve:person, you know?
Leif:Or.
Steve:I shouldn't say that, but she is a very in
Steve:command person when she is in
Steve:charge, and I. You know, Laurel was
Steve:shitty. I also just kind of was
Steve:like, you know, jenny, you just made a
Steve:dress at home on a sewing machine, and you expect,
Steve:like, somebody who's, like, really high in the fashion
Steve:industry to wear it to a major event. I thought that
Steve:was a little, lofty.
Leif:This is where just, like, with dad's writing, when we see
Leif:little snippets of it, we have to
Leif:suspend this belief. We have to just accept that
Leif:Jenny is, like, this genius designer.
Steve:That's fair. That's fair.
Leif:So back at the loft, Jenny gets to work
Leif:on her button assignment, and she and Dan
Leif:discuss dinner plans. Allison's in town,
Leif:but thankfully, we don't see her. Jenny asks
Leif:about the big breakup, and then Dan leaves to get
Leif:food.
Steve:Yeah, they're all, Alison's at South
Steve:Pacific. And, yes,
Steve:thank you for not making a cameo.
Leif:But good that they explain that the kids are just
Leif:living by themselves all summer.
Steve:Rufus isn't just on tour.
Leif:Yeah, but the real reason. They probably just didn't want to pay the
Leif:actress to come back.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Back at the Hamptons, Serena calls Chuck
Leif:out about prepping for Blair's return.
Leif:Serena thinks he has no chance with
Leif:Blaire. Chuck comes back with a burn. That about
Leif:Serena being alone and in a fake relationship,
Leif:that's got a sting.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. And I also
Steve:love in this that. Well, first of
Steve:all, Chuck's hair is
Steve:awful.
Leif:I thought it was much better this season.
Steve:Oh, I thought it was awful in that swing, that
Steve:scene where it was, like, all slicked down and, like,
Steve:I. Yeah, I actually hated
Steve:that. But I also love that he
Steve:sees right through Nate and Serena. Like.
Steve:Like, he's. And when we also know Gossip girl
Steve:sees through it, too, because gossip girl had even
Steve:said, like, yeah, they're so hot and
Steve:heavy. Why is she always alone and he's always Mia?
Leif:Blair arrives on the bus. What?
Leif:WTF? Smiles, knowing they had
Leif:Chuck and her as her new boyfriend exits after
Leif:her. Oh, poor Chucky. Ain't karma
Leif:a bitch? We know Blair Waldorf is
Leif:Chuck.
Steve:Does that, like Batman sling off the
Steve:screen, too?
Leif:Oh, yeah. this is definitely the season of,
Leif:Batman for. For Chuck.
Steve:He is vengeance.
Leif:everything he says from now on is pretty much all
Leif:whispers. The rest of the series,
Leif:he just whispers. And it's the. It's the COVID
Leif:of the bridge taxi. Because, he did slip up, like, once or twice
Leif:in season one.
Steve:Wow. I. You know, I never actually picked up on
Steve:it.
Leif:So that is the end of the first act, and we move into act
Leif:two. Blair and Serena are poolside discussing
Leif:Serena's lack of summer romance. Blair is bringing the
Leif:quips. A hot lifeguard is the legacy kleenex.
Leif:Use once and throw away. And the
Leif:only thing lamer than dating Dan Humphrey is.
Steve:Morning.
Leif:Dan humphrey.
Steve:Yeah. Robin actually loved the kleenex
Steve:analogy. She, cracked up with that. She
Steve:also loved the. The sitting shiva
Steve:reference. And she said the reason you're
Steve:still sitting shiva, for Dan
Steve:Humphrey, is that you haven't found somebody to get over
Steve:him.
Leif:Chuck walks by, and Blair instantly switches gears
Leif:to talking about her new boyfriend Jane's.
Leif:We then find out Chuck has the rando from the
Leif:finale, fired. Sounds like James is coming
Leif:to family dinner. Blair says she has to pick
Leif:up something from Nate first. I recognize blair's
Leif:skinny face when I see it.
Steve:It's funny because I can't help but think that
Steve:this dude from the season
Steve:finale just got fired
Steve:because the. The message boards were
Steve:like, no, this dude stupid. And so it's like,
Steve:well, shit, I guess Chuck's gonna have him
Steve:fired, and he's gonna introduce Blair to someone else.
Leif:Yep.
Steve:Also, a little bit on. On
Steve:Leighton Meester and her acting, we. We
Steve:talk about it all the time.
Steve:She's. Blair is really
Steve:bad at pretending and really bad at
Steve:being awkward. And
Steve:to me, it's one of those acting tricks. It's
Steve:actually a lot harder to do
Steve:in that kind of moment to
Steve:be a good actor and then acting
Steve:badly. It's sort of like
Steve:a singer trying to sing out of key. Or
Steve:like the scene in the jerk where Steve Martin
Steve:can't. Can't keep time
Steve:to intentionally be off
Steve:beat or off time is actually
Steve:more difficult than actually keeping the
Steve:rhythm sometimes. Or so like this.
Steve:This is just another one of those display of acting
Steve:chops where her bad acting is
Steve:actually really good acting.
Leif:M. Yeah,
Leif:shut. Rufus is on the tour
Leif:bus talking to Jenny. They are worried about Dan.
Leif:Rufus tries to encourage Jenny in her fashion
Leif:career, and Jack Jackson catches a stray in the
Leif:process. Rufus, suggests reaching out to
Leif:Eric for help getting. Getting into the white party.
Steve:Yeah. It was also nice that Rufus
Steve:did a little bit of parenting here. You know, it was nice
Steve:to see. I felt like it was the old Rufus
Steve:again, being, like, the good dad,
Steve:even from a distance. And, like, it's
Steve:funny because you almost get the sense that they're getting more
Steve:parenting from him on the road than they are from
Steve:Alison, who's there, who's
Steve:fucking the.
Leif:The neighbor still?
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. Who's. Who's, like, out on a
Steve:date with her boyfriend that she is still
Steve:with.
Leif:That's cr. Like, was he living there with
Leif:them? That's kind of weird. I don't know.
Steve:I had that thought. Like, is he. Does he also have his own
Steve:place? Because, like, if I'm Rufus,
Steve:right? And, like,
Steve:yeah, I'm just gonna bring. Yeah, I'm just gonna come stay at your
Steve:place and bring my. My boyfriend and fucking
Steve:your bedev.
Steve:You mind if we fucking the loft,
Steve:where you're gonna come home and sleep?
Steve:okay. I'll change the sheets.
Leif:They didn't change the sheets.
Steve:They didn't change the sheets.
Leif:Dan walks into a bar to meet with his boss,
Leif:who proceeds to fire Dan after he continues to make
Leif:excuses about night writing his story.
Steve:I love that Dan gets that taste of the industry, too,
Steve:that both Jenny and Dan, who
Steve:had these, who both have
Steve:a fantasy of working in
Steve:these high pressure,
Steve:you know, type of, type of careers where Jenny wants
Steve:to be in the fashion industry and Dan wants to be a writer.
Steve:And now they're both getting a taste of what that really
Steve:means. And it is, shut up and
Steve:do your job. And it is,
Steve:do your job or you're not going to have one. M.
Steve:which, of course, like, the shut up and do your job aspect
Steve:of Jenny. We know how that plays out, but
Steve:that is a lot of what the fashion industry
Steve:is going to be. That's, you know,
Steve:what internships often are.
Leif:And it is, I think it's good setup for what's going to come
Leif:from the season for both. Eric takes a call from
Leif:jenny. Eric makes her squirm for a minute before
Leif:forgiving her and agreeing to help.
Steve:Speaker one. I love this. I loved this
Steve:reconnection. I love how eric played it. I
Steve:love how it just felt so true to
Steve:who Eric is. He's just. And, you know, I don't
Steve:have a lot of friends, and so I need every backstabbing,
Steve:lying one that I can have. Like, he said that.
Steve:How do you deliver that line with so much love?
Steve:Is. Is so. It was
Steve:so great. And I really loved that reconnection.
Leif:I also did like seeing him with, hanging out with Chuck and Nate as
Leif:well.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. I loved eric's
Steve:presence in this episode. Yeah. The later
Steve:scene with them, is fantastic.
Leif:The lifeguard shows up to pick up Serena
Leif:in a chimera. Ew.
Steve:Not ironically, an
Steve:unironic camaro.
Leif:Serena reminds Blair to keep up Nate's cover
Leif:story that he and Serena are dating.
Leif:So let's get into this cover story.
Leif:I don't get it. Are, all three of them hanging out for some
Leif:reason? Why do they need this cover
Leif:story?
Steve:Yeah. Why? Yeah. Like,
Steve:Nate. Nate. I get Nate needing a cover
Steve:story to keep off of the back of.
Steve:Like, he's dating a married woman, but,
Steve:like, Serena.
Leif:But they're not dating. They're just fucking.
Steve:But they're just fucking. Yeah.
Leif:They're not together anywhere else.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. It is just a secret
Steve:hookup.
Leif:So why do they need to cover? Yeah, it makes more sense for
Leif:Serena. Cause she doesn't wanna get hit on constantly right
Leif:now.
Steve:Exactly. She would be. And the fact
Steve:that only one dude hits on her, and it's this lifeguard
Steve:who she could not give a shit
Steve:about. She is so not
Steve:interested in this date.
Leif:Yeah.
Steve:And it's funny because I feel like this
Steve:date was only written in to
Steve:have them talk about the Nate
Steve:relationship and the Nate, you know,
Steve:shoe front, this whole thing. And I say that
Steve:because later on, they definitely have a continuity
Steve:error where Serena talks about how
Steve:great, James was
Steve:at brunch that Serena wasn't at.
Leif:I missed that. Speaking of Nate, is
Leif:once again getting hot and heavy with the older woman from
Leif:before. How much older and how married is
Leif:she?
Steve:Too old and too married is my note.
Leif:Yeah, pretty much. Yeah. Yeah.
Leif:But, yeah, we. We start to get inklings of the, This
Leif:is probably someone that's much older and
Leif:probably in a relationship.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah.
Leif:So. Guy.
Steve:Well, I think at this point, they. Oh, no. Yeah.
Steve:Ah, I guess they haven't said it out loud yet.
Leif:At dinner, Chuck is interrogating Blair's
Leif:new bow. Eric and Cece call him out.
Leif:But he responds to tip in typical Chuck
Leif:fashion. Hey, everybody. Grandma's back. When
Leif:Chuck sees the heart on Jane's sleeve,
Leif:he gets up to leave, clearly distraught.
Leif:Chucky boy.
Steve:Aw, Chuck
Steve:has feelings. I actually have two notes
Steve:on this scene. the first is that, the way
Steve:that Chuck tries to subtly weaponize
Steve:homophobia when he's like,
Steve:you know, you. So how was Harold and,
Steve:oh, what's his boyfriend's
Steve:name? Like, really felt like he
Steve:was trying to, like, oh, let's see how this dude reacts
Steve:when we bring up. And of course, James is like, oh, yeah,
Steve:they were great.
Leif:What was he weapon? I thought he was just trying to fish
Leif:to see if he knew the name.
Steve:Oh, I see. I saw it as he was trying to fish to
Steve:see if he would have a reaction to the gay
Steve:parents. That was how I read that.
Steve:But I, That might just be.
Leif:Yeah, I don't really get that, but it's possible. to me, it was more he was just
Leif:fishing to see if he was there.
Steve:That makes sense.
Leif:He was, like, checking up on Blair's story.
Steve:That tracks. The other thing that I want to say about this, and
Steve:this might be something that you were going to tell me earlier,
Steve:but I felt throughout this entire episode
Steve:that Lily was unavailable. And
Steve:Cece was written for Lily. Yes.
Leif:And Cece, ah, is way out of character.
Steve:And Cece is entirely out of
Steve:character. And just. Welp, I had a whole change of heart because
Steve:I survived cancer, which. Okay, like, I'll take
Steve:it, but that. But the entire thing,
Steve:like, needed Lily.
Leif:Like, yeah, so I'm
Leif:pretty sure this is when she had her kid.
Leif:Okay, but this is, like, the first half. Many times
Leif:throughout the series, where she just kind of disappears
Leif:for real life reasons, usually to do with the kid.
Leif:apparently it was a very messy divorce, and the guy lived in
Leif:England.
Steve:And I remember you.
Leif:Vicious custody battle going on.
Steve:And it's such a shame because, like, man,
Steve:again, it was written for Lily. You can see
Steve:it all over the place, and she would have fucking killed
Steve:it. And Cece doesn't. Yeah, Cece
Steve:is just not good in this.
Steve:I have a later note on her, but we'll get to that
Steve:later. Yeah.
Leif:Just doesn't fit her character.
Steve:No, not at all. Does she revert back to old
Steve:Cece later on? Like, is this
Steve:who she is now, or does she
Steve:go back to being an asshole when Lily's around?
Leif:She definitely goes back to being asshole, but
Leif:she's a little more. She's definitely softened out
Leif:from her first appearance, but she definitely reverts
Leif:more. She goes back more to character.
Steve:I would assume that it's one of those things that
Steve:when Lily's there, she goes back to her old character, and when
Steve:Lily's not, she's written for Lily.
Steve:But we'll see. We'll keep an eye on
Steve:that.
Leif:Blair follows after him. Looks like we know
Leif:Blair had to get what Blair had to get from
Leif:Nate. Chuck is devastated and walks away again.
Leif:Blair hides her tears. This are just
Leif:fucking idiots.
Steve:They are. They are. But this fucking scene.
Steve:The colors, like, the color
Steve:palette of this scene, the green,
Steve:the green background with the pink
Steve:across the, behind Chuck and the
Steve:water behind Blair and the way that they
Steve:shot it with the. The close ups
Steve:to really catch their. Their reactions and then
Steve:these broad shots of this
Steve:beautiful outdoor
Steve:little garden area, I
Steve:just. I was blown away, and it's a very
Steve:emotionally powerful scene. Like, I got. I
Steve:got wrapped up in it. It was really good.
Leif:Yeah. Very good chemistry
Leif:still.
Steve:Yeah, it was. Yeah, it was,
Steve:unbelievable.
Leif:Back of the table, Blair grabs the heart pin from Jane's
Leif:sleeve, an obvious plant, as he wasn't even aware it
Leif:was there.
Steve:Yeah. Oh, I didn't feel a thing. Neither did
Steve:I. Oh,
Steve:man.
Leif:I love Blair's lines.
Steve:Yeah, that. It was such a good
Steve:line, and it was so. It
Steve:seems like such a throwaway, but she
Steve:just fucking stuck the landing so
Steve:well.
Leif:Nate and his lady friend are basking in the
Leif:afterglow when her husband gets home early, and Nate
Leif:is forced to run out of the house in only
Leif:underwear. Serena and her date almost
Leif:hit him as he was crossing the street. Nate
Leif:is busted.
Steve:She's clearly done this before.
Steve:Yeah, she clearly has an escape
Steve:route. She
Steve:was way too calm.
Steve:Okay. It is a code. Husband, I'm going to need you
Steve:to choose either through the window or, was the
Steve:other option under the bed m or the closet or something
Steve:like that. And, like. And, you know,
Steve:she just went into, like, husband returning
Steve:protocol mode, and. And
Steve:Nate was like, what the fuck?
Leif:Sarita and Blair are walking down the street, and she
Leif:admits she doesn't even like James. That and that
Leif:Chuck ruined her summer mother.
Steve:Chucker. And that chuck
Steve:bastard. Yeah. I love it.
Leif:I love it. Chuck bastard also.
Steve:Yeah. This is where. This is where the scene where Serena
Steve:compliments James, where
Steve:Blair calls James boring to Serena,
Steve:and Serena's like, well, at brunch the other day, he
Steve:was great. He was talking about this and this, and he said
Steve:all. And I was like,
Steve:lar, you weren't at brunch. You were
Steve:on a date that you two already referenced earlier in
Steve:the scene.
Leif:Nate and Chuck are walking down the same street, and Chuck
Leif:says he is avoiding Blair and the white party and going back to
Leif:the city early.
Steve:Aw.
Leif:yeah, he thought he was going to get Blair right away.
Steve:Yeah, yeah.
Leif:And then the two sets of best friends just happened
Leif:to bump into each other. Serena questions Nate about
Leif:the affair, while Chuck questions James
Leif:backstory. Now Chuck has his scheming
Leif:face on.
Steve:Mmm. yeah,
Steve:I love it. Like, what college does he go
Steve:when he and blair get into the bickering over Bristol college George
Steve:stuff?
Leif:Briston. Georgetown.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah, it was so great. And then he's like,
Steve:eric, you were there.
Steve:And then like, okay, we gotta see what we can find on
Steve:him.
Leif:And I do some research during junior.
Steve:Yeah. And I love how Eric just does.
Steve:Like, I love how Eric is like.
Leif:What else is he going to do?
Steve:Yeah. Yeah, I would like. That was his attitude. Like, yeah,
Steve:sure. Fuck yeah, I'll do this.
Leif:yeah, I love. At the end of the scene,
Leif:chase gives us a little eye roll. Like, he's like, oh, my God.
Leif:What are you doing, Chuck?
Steve:Yeah, yeah.
Leif:Like, let him do comedy. Let him do,
Leif:comedy.
Steve:Yeah, please. Yeah. Yeah.
Leif:Dan is bitching to his dad about getting fired.
Leif:Rufus knows all about writer's block and the Vander
Leif:Woodson woman.
Steve:Yeah. Like, oh, it took me twelve years to finish
Steve:a song. that's not what
Steve:your kid needs to hear right now, though.
Leif:Like, wow, at least it's only been a couple months for him.
Steve:Yeah, but just like, imagine being
Steve:like, hey, I wanna. I'm an aspiring writer.
Steve:And then your dad, who is, like, a
Steve:professional writer of a different sort,
Steve:is like, yeah, once I had writer's block for twelve years. It's
Steve:like, shit, am I gonna have this for twelve years?
Leif:well, he remembers what
Leif:uncorked that writer's block for his dad. So he's
Leif:like, I have an idea.
Leif:Back at Cece's house, nate, Chuck and eric are playing
Leif:polo and discussing the holes in James backstory.
Leif:Eric has gotten as far as he can, so Chuck calls
Leif:his personal PI.
Steve:He has a PI on speed dial.
Steve:Yeah. I love Chuck and
Steve:eric's relationship, and I just love
Steve:how. How eric is just
Steve:all in. Like, oh, you want me to do some digging on this
Steve:random dude? Sure, bro. Like, I'm here
Steve:for it. And I also love, like, he,
Steve:like, you know, they're hanging out with Nate.
Steve:I love that Nate and eric are hanging out now because of
Steve:this. I love eric having friends, you
Steve:know? Yeah.
Leif:It is nice to see him doing much better this season.
Steve:yeah.
Leif:He did much better than he was in the first season premiere.
Steve:Yeah. Especially at this point in last season, he was in much worse
Steve:shape.
Leif:So good to see.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Serena and nate have a conversation about his
Leif:affair, and Nate is fucking dumb.
Leif:it's pretty sad when serena has to mansplain to
Leif:you.
Steve:Yeah. I love the serena and nate
Steve:friendship. I think that they are just really
Steve:sweet together. I love how they
Steve:interact and how they're just there for each other. I think it's
Steve:sweet.
Leif:Blair gets text from Chuck announcing that he's coming to
Leif:the white party after all. She looks like she is
Leif:smelling a foul, older odor as she invites James
Leif:to the white party.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:She was about to break up with.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah.
Leif:And. And it was funny for one more night.
Steve:Yeah. And he was also about to
Steve:confess to her. Yeah. As well.
Steve:That, like, had he just talked, but. But also,
Steve:had he told her then, I think that would
Steve:have had a very different impact on where
Steve:they ended up.
Leif:Yeah. You know, but also, like, if Blair was going to
Leif:break up with him now, like, what was her plan for when school
Leif:started?
Steve:Yeah. Yes.
Leif:I guess he wanted to. He was keeping them
Leif:around because Chuck was specifically coming to the party to confront
Leif:about lying about, Princeton. Georgetown.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Leif:Dan arrives in the Hamptons via the jitney and
Leif:hops in the nearest cab. Dan's on
Leif:the scene. Finally.
Steve:Yep. Yeah. Good
Steve:job, Dan.
Leif:Yeah. And that is the end
Leif:of act two. We move to act three. The white
Leif:party is popping off thanks to some not so
Leif:clever product placement.
Leif:so, yes, as Josh Schwartz discovered in
Leif:his second, batch of shows. So he did this
Leif:show and Chuck at the same time.
Leif:You can get some money for, product placement.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:a lot of subway on Chuck, and we have
Leif:vitamin water all over the place here.
Steve:Yeah. It was catered by vitamin
Steve:water, pretty much like.
Leif:Well, yeah, the vitamin water white party.
Steve:Yeah, yeah.
Leif:And there's stacks of them.
Steve:Yeah. and
Steve:also,
Steve:Laurel, when she was ripping apart Jenny's
Steve:dress was like. And that's eggshell.
Steve:And this party, there is a lot of off white
Steve:in eggshell.
Leif:Most of it's off white.
Steve:Yeah. Like, tons of people are wearing things that
Steve:matched what Jenny was wearing.
Leif:Jenny arrives with Eric and gets a
Leif:WTF stare from Laurel.
Steve:Wait. Oh, yeah.
Leif:It's like, bitch, what do you. Why do you care if she's there?
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Why. Why do you care?
Steve:Yeah, I actually think I have that as a note later on, too,
Steve:like. Like, are you security?
Leif:Are you security?
Steve:Yeah. Why is this such a big deal to you? And, like,
Steve:when she does confront Jennie, which we'll talk about, but, like, that was
Steve:my way.
Leif:And looked the. At the list.
Steve:Yeah, yeah. She, like, did race. Like, it took.
Steve:She. It would upset her so much that she took
Steve:time out of her. Of her enjoyment at this
Steve:fucking party.
Leif:yeah. Catherine makes a snide comment
Leif:today, and Nate just asked Serena to get him
Leif:drunk.
Steve:Yeah. She was mad that
Steve:Nate was there, and she just, you know, you tried.
Steve:Are you trying to get me a divorce? And
Steve:Nate wants to get drunk? Yep.
Leif:Why are we doing this story?
Steve:Yeah. Thank you. Thank you.
Leif:Cece is getting ready for the party when who knocks on
Leif:her door? Daniel Humphrey, that's who.
Leif:Dad helps her put on her pearls. Cece is a
Leif:changed woman. Is now playing Cupid for Stan and
Leif:Serena.
Steve:Yeah. She's all about this relationship that she
Steve:was absolutely all against for
Steve:many reasons the last
Steve:time we saw her.
Leif:Yeah. You didn't want her to stop her
Leif:from being with the advocates for happiness. Yeah,
Leif:that had nothing to do with her happiness.
Steve:Yeah, yeah. Nothing.
Steve:yeah. And again, this whole
Steve:scene just felt like they needed Lily, and they're,
Steve:like.
Leif:Definitely ready for Lily.
Steve:Oh, shit. Well, how are we going to have
Steve:Cece take him to the party? Well, we'll just
Steve:say that cancer made her nice.
Leif:Yeah. Blair is becoming
Leif:more and more transparent. Her attempts to use James to
Leif:make Chuck jealous. Even James finally gets the
Leif:hint and walks away.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Where are you? Screwed up. Took it too
Leif:far.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. And again, this is Layton being
Steve:great at bad acting, too.
Leif:Laurel confronts Jenny about the being at the
Leif:party. She is still being a total bitch to Jenny
Leif:for no reason. Then Eric sets Jenny up
Leif:for the alley oop slam by bringing over
Leif:socialite Tinsley Mortimer, who
Leif:absolutely loves Jenny's dress.
Steve:Yeah, so. So Robin gave an audible squeal when
Steve:Tinsley, mortal Mortimer came over. But, like, we
Steve:were just saying about Laurel, like, it's one thing to be an
Steve:asshole at. At work, right? Where, like, you are the
Steve:boss and it is your job and, like, you are under pressure and,
Steve:like, you were more of an asshole than you needed to be, but it was
Steve:kind of understandable in a situation where you're
Steve:at work, but, you're not at work. Like, what do
Steve:you give a shit so much that you're wasting your party?
Steve:Time to go look at the guest list and to also
Steve:be like, and how do you know
Steve:somebody that would be at this party?
Steve:It's like I go to fucking Constance.
Steve:I go to a fucking rich Upper east
Steve:side school. You don't think I don't don't
Steve:know anybody at that fucking school. I
Steve:dated Ash Ashton.
Steve:I dated Asher. What's his
Steve:name? Yeah.
Leif:yeah. Well, over the top from Laurel.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:James calls Blair out for using him.
Leif:Chuck is sitting in the shadows and steps in as James
Leif:walks away. Blair is still too hurt
Leif:to make things work.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. And this is where James just lands
Steve:a crit on. On Blair, too. Where
Steve:isn't this where. Where he turns to her and is like,
Steve:Was this all about, like, am I really boring,
Steve:or are you just so obsessed with yourself that you just didn't
Steve:take the time to learn anything about me? And it was
Steve:just like, you could just see her just
Steve:like, I just get stabbed in the gut and just
Steve:like, oh, fuck. And then.
Steve:And then for Chuck to immediately be like, see, we
Steve:belong together. You're just like me. And it's like, no, I'm
Steve:not.
Leif:Nate and Serena are still talking about the affair.
Leif:Serena starts making out with Nate to make Katherine
Leif:jealous. Unfortunately for Serena, Katherine
Leif:isn't the only one who gets jealous. At the ruse, Dan
Leif:conveniently arrives just in time to witness the
Leif:guests.
Steve:It's so, like, it.
Leif:It's, like, so t drama.
Steve:And it's so. It's like the steamroller.
Steve:Like, it's like the steamroller and Austin powers
Steve:where you see this happening for, like,
Steve:you know, 30 yards away.
Steve:It's like, wow, they're going to start kissing,
Steve:and then I doubt Dan's going to see
Steve:that, even though it doesn't mean anything.
Leif:yeah. Back from commercial break. Dan
Leif:is back to judging Serena, but get some instant
Leif:karma when the two young ladies he was macking with back
Leif:in act one show up and call him out right out in the middle of
Leif:the rant. His rant arena.
Steve:Yeah. He's a real dick, especially
Steve:when he slut shames her. Yeah. When
Steve:she's like, I'm surprised, and he's like, well, I'm
Steve:nothing. And, like, I will
Steve:say the one point where.
Leif:I hate how Serena just, like, goes, like,
Leif:goes along with it.
Steve:Yeah, yeah, yeah. The one
Steve:thing where I understood where Dan was coming
Steve:from is the point of
Steve:you can't tell me why. And it's
Steve:always a. There's always something you can't tell me, and there's
Steve:always another reason behind things, but
Steve:also, like, get over it,
Steve:Dan. Like. Like, shut up about it. Yeah.
Leif:Stop being a fucking judge, Rachel.
Steve:Dick. Yeah. And stop being a fucking hypocrite.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Like, so,
Leif:Dan was definitely being a dick, and. But
Leif:I will say those other girls
Leif:didn't really have much leg to stand on because they were
Leif:there with other dates, too. So it's like, clearly there was
Leif:not a monogamous relationship.
Steve:Right, right.
Leif:And did Dan deserve to have them throw their
Leif:drinks on that nice seventies suit?
Steve:Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Well,
Steve:and. And also to that point,
Steve:like, why would Dan
Steve:be surprised to
Steve:see Serena and Nate hooking up?
Steve:Dan knows what's on the gossip
Steve:girl message boards, and if she. He doesn't,
Steve:Jenny does.
Leif:maybe he's been not paying attention.
Steve:This summer, but do you think Jenny
Steve:wasn't? You think it was never brought up that,
Steve:hey, it looks like Serena and Nate are dating each other.
Steve:I feel like it was way too public for Dan
Steve:not to know.
Leif:I feel like Jenny would have not told him
Leif:if he was purposely, like, being,
Leif:like, staying out of it. I feel like Jenny
Leif:would not have said anything.
Steve:I don't know because I feel like Jenny was also really trying
Steve:to get the info on. On stuff,
Steve:you know, he was.
Leif:But, she likes to get the info. She doesn't give the info.
Steve:Yeah, that's true. I'm just. I just
Steve:find it difficult to believe.
Steve:I mean, yes, there are reasons that he wouldn't have known and he
Steve:wouldn't have seen it, but I just feel like the
Steve:way that gossip girl is used in this
Steve:that he should have.
Leif:But, you know, he is a loner. He's,
Steve:Well, but he. But he wasn't.
Leif:But these are not upper. He's, like, hanging out in Brooklyn
Leif:now with the writer chicks. The writer
Leif:groupies.
Steve:Yeah. Fair.
Leif:yeah. In the quiet
Leif:hall. In a quiet hallway, Katherine and Nate begin making
Leif:out. What is with Nate? And letting the mother figures
Leif:walk all over him? I'm sure doctor Freud would have
Leif:something to say on this subject. Maybe they are setting up
Leif:Nate's season six storyline to be a
Leif:tragedy in which he kills his dad and fucks his mom.
Steve:Yeah, I'd watch that.
Leif:Yeah. Well. Well,
Leif:not really, but. Well, yeah, I'd read about
Leif:it.
Leif:Serena is helping Dan wash the vitamin water
Leif:out of his. Out of her grandfather's vintage suit.
Leif:Dan admits he was trying to chuck the pain
Leif:away this summer. Serena can't resist
Leif:the Dan in a muscle tank, but, right at what did
Leif:it better, though?
Steve:like, it's a cute makeup scene. But
Steve:why is it, though?
Leif:Hold on.
Steve:Hold. Well, it's cute.
Steve:Like, they're kind of talking, and they're cleaning
Steve:the thing, and they're going back and forth.
Steve:But, like, I was also like, why? Why are they
Steve:getting back together? And my only guess is
Steve:that the message boards over the summer were like, why the
Steve:fuck did you break them up? But,
Steve:like, why are they getting back together? Like,
Steve:the breakup was going to bring
Steve:about new stories and new.
Leif:But I feel like the show is also telling us that
Leif:it's not the right time for them to get back together.
Leif:Like, they're getting back together, but they didn't talk through their
Leif:issues at all. It's clearly still just a
Leif:physical attraction thing. It's like, like I
Leif:said, when he takes off his shirt, she's
Leif:like, ready to
Leif:go.
Steve:Yeah, yeah. Also, this is where
Steve:I have the other note that Cece is
Steve:practically a muppet.
Steve:Like, she just looked like, she reminded me
Steve:of the. Of the dark crystal muppets.
Steve:The way that she just kind of, like, is
Steve:she, like, turned and she had this, like, turn and walked
Steve:off screen, and, like, it was, like,
Steve:so muppet esque, but, like.
Steve:But, like, creepy muppet esque.
Leif:And it was like,
Leif:I like the actress play Cece. I just think her. She
Leif:was written out a character this episode.
Steve:Yeah. And I think that it made it, and I think
Steve:that she played the other Cece
Steve:better. I think she played Cece
Steve:great. I didn't think she played Lily very well.
Leif:Blair, apologizes to James. He admits his
Leif:fake backstory. At the same time, Chuck is
Leif:finding out the truth from his PI. James is
Leif:actually Marcus, a real british
Leif:lord. this is the most ridiculous
Leif:scene ever.
Steve:I. So before he
Steve:confessed in. In the earlier thing, when he's like,
Steve:I have a secret I need to tell you, too. To
Steve:Blair. When they were discussing the whole college thing,
Steve:I turned to rob and I said, he's a british
Steve:lord or a prince or some fucking shit like
Steve:that. Boom.
Leif:Yep. But,
Leif:unfortunately, I think his american accent's a little better than his british
Leif:accent. The actor is actually american.
Steve:Yeah, well, yeah, but,
Steve:like, that changed.
Leif:Mid sense was so ridiculous.
Steve:I was there laughing. Yeah, it was so
Steve:bad. And
Steve:just so, like, yeah, this guy's
Steve:gonna be a fucking prince, isn't he? Or some
Steve:stupid fucking
Steve:any. And he's, I'm assuming, gonna
Steve:be around at least for another episode, because the
Steve:episode, next episode title I did see.
Leif:Yes, he's gonna be around for a little bit.
Steve:I'm okay with that.
Leif:But that is the end of act three, so we move
Leif:into the epilogue. Jenny shocks
Leif:Solaro with her loyalty Jenny turned down
Leif:an offer from Tinsley to continue working at Waldorf
Leif:designs.
Steve:Yeah, little, j takes
Steve:the high road.
Leif:But why?
Steve:Why? Like, I
Steve:mean, it seemed like you had something
Steve:that. I don't know, I just felt like she didn't really
Steve:owe anything to Eleanor at this point because
Steve:they shit on
Steve:her, you know, like, go where
Steve:you're appreciated and where they actually respect what
Steve:you're doing.
Leif:But I I don't really. It was part of
Leif:that Parsons internship program,
Leif:so maybe that means something. I don't
Leif:know.
Steve:Yeah, I feel like it was played off to
Steve:be like, Jenny takes the high road sort of thing. Like,
Steve:Jenny. Jenny's gonna forgive Laurel, and
Steve:Laurel's gonna learn a lesson, you know, like.
Steve:Like. And really, I,
Steve:might, like. I was kind of like, fuck Laurel in this
Steve:situation.
Leif:Chuck admits to Blair that he was scared and begs
Leif:her to stay with him, but he can't emit those
Leif:three words, eight letters. Blair gets
Leif:in the car with Marcus, and they drive away.
Steve:Yeah.
Steve:this is another one of those, like, just super
Steve:well shot scenes. The directing and.
Steve:And the acting and that especially, like, the
Steve:face acting. The up m close. Close shots are
Steve:just. They capture just so
Steve:much. and. And again, the
Steve:chemistry between Ed and
Steve:Leighton or Layton. again,
Steve:just. It just. It was a heart
Steve:wrenching scene. And when she goes and gets in the car,
Steve:it's like you feel for Chuck even
Steve:though he fucks up. Like, he's.
Steve:He's in his. He's in his bed of his own making,
Steve:but you feel for him.
Leif:Nate gets a note from Katherine as she is
Leif:leaving with her husband. Looks like the fair
Leif:is still on.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. And it's like, meet me at a
Steve:hotel.
Leif:So guess that story's
Leif:still happening, too.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was
Steve:like, oh, that was my thought, too. Like,
Steve:this is still going to have. This is still going to go on.
Leif:Apparently, Dan is finally writing his
Leif:story by a beachside campfire as Serena walks
Leif:up with an unsure look on her face. So I'm
Leif:not sure if that was intentional or if that was just Blake cabbing
Leif:gas.
Steve:Yeah, I didn't. I had that
Steve:thought. So the first time I'm watching, I was like, she's
Steve:going to turn and walk away, and he's just going to be sitting there all alone.
Steve:and why? And then she doesn't, and I'm like, oh,
Steve:okay. They are going to get back together, but why?
Leif:Because they're 17 and they're
Leif:extremely attracted to each other,
Leif:which definitely tracks.
Steve:And I do believe. My
Steve:instinct is saying that the message board that Josh
Steve:Schwartz is love affair with the
Steve:message boards may. Must have played a
Steve:role somewhat because I believe you said
Steve:that, like, at the end of the season,
Steve:at our last episode, that they. The
Steve:message boards were like, why did they break up? Like, dan,
Steve:you idiot. And so I wonder if
Steve:there was some fan.
Leif:Yeah, I guess we'll see.
Leif:We'll see.
Steve:But I just feel like a lot of this.
Leif:I mean, do you think they're going to last?
Steve:I feel like they will for a little while, anyway. I feel
Steve:like putting them back together like this. I
Steve:feel like. I feel like
Steve:I give them to at least the midseason finale.
Steve:Like, halfway through the. Through the season, if not
Steve:longer.
Leif:Chuck is drinking away his sorrows alone
Leif:at the bar.
Leif:Yes, this is the feeling. This is a season of sad
Leif:Chuck.
Steve:Bat Chuck.
Leif:Yes. Serena and Dan embrace on the
Leif:beach as fireworks go off and fell in love
Leif:without you by motion picture soundtrack plays
Leif:for the final time as the screen goes to
Leif:black.
Steve:I should have said, I'm best man.
Steve:yeah, I kind of feel like it kind of left us
Steve:back where we were in season one.
Leif:Yeah. They still have not resolved any of their
Leif:issues.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. I feel like. I felt like there
Steve:was such resolution at the end of season
Steve:one, and there was also.
Steve:And there was resolution at the end of season one, and
Steve:this shake up of Dan and
Steve:Vanessa and Serena and Nate, and
Steve:I didn't want the dan and Vanessa thing to happen.
Steve:Apparently, Vanessa wanted the dan and Vanessa thing to happen,
Steve:but then realized that Dan wanted the dan and
Steve:whoever in Brooklyn thing to happen, and Vanessa
Steve:wasn't having it. Yeah.
Leif:Yeah. yeah. So we heard about Vanessa, but, yeah, thankfully,
Leif:she was not on screen.
Steve:Yeah. Sweet. Yeah, we had
Steve:off screen Allison and Vanessa, and
Steve:honestly, ladies, your best performances.
Leif:So besides, I see you're saying mid
Leif:season breakup for, dance arena.
Leif:What else we got? Chuck and blair. What's going to happen with
Leif:them?
Steve:Eventually. Eventually,
Steve:Marcus is going to have to realize that for
Steve:all that he can give Blair, her heart is
Steve:somewhere else. Like, I feel like that's where that is going
Steve:to end up, and so it'll end up with
Steve:Chuck and Blair. M again.
Steve:I still kind of want Vanessa and Nate to happen.
Steve:We have to have a Vanessa. I think
Steve:that she's definitely where she.
Leif:Was at her best.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. I can
Steve:tolerate her. I can tolerate Vanessa when
Steve:Georgina Sparks is around or when
Steve:she's with Nate, but they seem to happen at the same time,
Steve:so.
Leif:But please get rid of Catherine.
Steve:Yeah, that. Come on. Like, why are we.
Steve:And then, like, I'm. Maybe.
Steve:Maybe that now we're in 2024 and
Steve:looking back at, like, the.
Steve:The number of. Of, like,
Steve:teachers and male high
Steve:school students, like, female teachers or, like,
Steve:the. Where you
Steve:hear that on the news, and there. There was the
Steve:time where it was where the
Steve:guys would make the jokes of, like, oh, ha.
Leif:Ah ha.
Steve:Lucky. Like, man of my teacher, whatever. But,
Steve:like, if you really think about that shit, it's
Steve:traumatizing. And, like, it really can, like,
Steve:have huge, fucked up,
Steve:long term impact on. On a. On a
Steve:young kid like that. And I feel like
Steve:this show doesn't have the.
Steve:The. Doesn't have the
Steve:weight to. Doesn't have the strength to carry
Steve:that weight.
Leif:Yeah.
Steve:You know, I feel like this needs to get wrapped up
Steve:quickly before it gets creepier and
Steve:grosser.
Leif:Yeah, well, we'll see how that
Leif:goes. So that is it for our
Leif:episode this week in
Leif:fandom. We went back into the wayback
Leif:machine to take a look at the television without the pity
Leif:forums. We got Dan is still a
Leif:jackass, but prettier.
Steve:Okay. Yeah, there's a little better.
Leif:How old is Marcus?
Steve:Yeah, I mean, once again, like, Marcus
Steve:definitely looks like he's
Steve:at least late twenties. Yeah.
Leif:I mean, he was saying he was in college, but then at the end,
Leif:he's like, no, I don't go to school.
Steve:Not actually in college. I'm not
Steve:actually in college. No.
Leif:Unsure about Cece's 180,
Leif:as we talked about, as kind of odd.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:Dan and Serena getting back together won't
Leif:last.
Steve:Yeah. I also feel like, why get them back
Steve:together? Just to break them back up? Which is why I said, even
Steve:if it doesn't last, I think it will at least
Steve:last until, like, that mid season
Steve:finale. Yeah. Christmas episode.
Steve:or big episode around then.
Leif:Can't get enough of Chuck and Blair.
Leif:Yeah. As we talked about, they had the
Leif:episode.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah.
Leif:And Eric. They're happy. Eric's
Leif:happy.
Steve:Yeah. like we said, like, you know, it's just
Steve:I love that little guy. He's such a great guy to root for,
Steve:and he's such, like, a lovable
Steve:character who. Who is also
Steve:just one of those super sincere kids who doesn't
Steve:judge people by anything other than what's
Steve:in front of them. It's like he's, like, a smarter Nate,
Steve:you know?
Leif:Yes.
Steve:And a more. And a more, Like,
Steve:yeah, yeah. More perceptive, empathetic, and
Steve:more empathetic. That's the word I'm looking for.
Leif:So moving on to grades. It's the
Leif:first episode of the season, so you get to go first.
Steve:All right. Well, I gave this one.
Steve:I'm going to actually give it a. I gave it a b
Steve:plus, and I was. That was shaky even there.
Steve:I was, I started at an a and then just kind of started, like,
Steve:listing my. The things that bothered in it started
Steve:dropping the score there. There is
Steve:great directing in this episode. I
Steve:think the director got great performances out of
Steve:the. Out of the cast. I feel like the
Steve:shot choices and the. And
Steve:the general, like, directorial
Steve:choices were really good, but
Steve:there was some really predictable and
Steve:sometimes weird writing. The cc
Steve:thing is one of the big pieces that I
Steve:think kind of held the episode back. And
Steve:again, like, I thought it was weird to get Dan and Serena
Steve:back together, especially if the idea is to get
Steve:together, get them together just to break them up again,
Steve:and especially if they break up over all the same dumb
Steve:shit. Why are we. I
Steve:hate when a season two of a show is a season
Steve:one redo.
Leif:I mean, I get it, but it definitely
Leif:makes sense for teenagers to do
Leif:something like that.
Steve:Yeah, it does, but.
Leif:But we don't. We don't want to see it.
Steve:Yeah, but, like. Yeah, I. Like,
Steve:I taught it. I taught middle and high
Steve:school long enough that, like, I. Yes, I recognize
Steve:the reality of it, and it's boring there, too.
Steve:It's boring in real life, too.
Leif:So I have very similar thoughts, but I
Leif:actually went, a bit lower. I'm gonna give it a c
Leif:plus.
Steve:Cool. Yeah.
Leif:The directing was okay. The acting was
Leif:good in some scenes, but it was
Leif:okay overall. And the writing was
Leif:just mediocre.
Steve:Yeah, yeah.
Leif:The c plus, I can't argue that.
Steve:Like, I think that's a fair grade. but I. You know, and
Steve:I also kind of felt like. I feel like
Steve:after the writers strike, I started getting a taste of what
Steve:Gossip girl not.
Leif:I think this episode on the positive,
Leif:it did do some good setup. I think it
Leif:set up some stuff for the season.
Steve:Yeah. Although I think some of the stuff it
Steve:set up is also sort of, like, you know,
Steve:they, like, some of the things that it does set up are, like,
Steve:the nate thing, you know, and the,
Leif:Yeah, yeah.
Leif:Stock watch. Who do you got going up?
Steve:All right. Going up. I feel like this was a
Steve:very up heavy episode.
Leif:Oh, really? I was the opposite.
Steve:Really? I have. I have most people going up
Steve:by the end of this episode. I have most of them going up.
Steve:Actually, I had Blair going up because now shes
Steve:dating a prince. Dan and Serena
Steve:going up because they got back together. And good for
Steve:them. And Dan can write again. And good for
Steve:them. Jenny going up because shes gotten
Steve:some of the respect to Laurel and she got offered a job
Steve:from Tinsley Mortimer.
Steve:Marcus because he landed Blair
Steve:cece for not being a complete and total fucking
Steve:asshole for now, Rufus
Steve:for some solid road parenting.
Steve:And as much as I. Well, you know what? No, I'm going to take
Steve:that one out. I'm not going to give Nate an up
Steve:because Nate.
Leif:Ah. So for me, the only ones I had going up were Eric and
Leif:jenny. Eric. Eric has some friends
Leif:now. And Jenny got back with Eric and, you
Leif:know, full one over on her boss and
Leif:impressed Tinsley Mortimer.
Steve:I actually meant to have Eric too. I didn't write it
Steve:down, but I would. I also had Eric going up because
Steve:Eric, like you said, was just fucking awesome.
Leif:I almost was going to give Dan going up because he got
Leif:laid a couple times and. And also got back together with
Leif:Serena, but then I just realized that was my damn bias showing
Leif:through. And he was a total douchebag in this episode.
Leif:And getting back to Serena is obviously the wrong move
Leif:here.
Steve:That's fair. That's fair.
Leif:Who do you got going down?
Steve:I had, well, Chuck
Steve:start. Chuck starting the season
Steve:in the negative again because he just kind of lost
Steve:everything.
Leif:Laurel.
Steve:Laurel stock went down because laurel was an
Steve:asshole and got, shown up by little jay.
Steve:Catherine. Her stock is going down
Steve:for being a pedophile
Steve:and mister catherine for being married to a
Steve:pedophile who's cheating on it.
Steve:That's all we. That's all we have of his name. We don't know
Steve:his name yet.
Leif:yeah, it would feel more flat.
Steve:Yeah. Yeah. Mister Catherine. Is that
Steve:it? Yeah.
Leif:For me, I had Blair going
Leif:down because she is with
Leif:a prince or a lord, but she doesn't really love
Leif:him. And she just acted like a fool
Leif:this whole episode. Oh, yeah,
Leif:Chuck, obviously you mister sad man. All
Leif:episode. He's going, way down. Dan,
Leif:for. Yeah, like, like I said before, he's just a total douche all
Leif:episode. And he shouldn't be getting back together with Serena now because they have not
Leif:worked through their issues. Yeah, Serena for the
Leif:same reason. Fair
Leif:Marcus going down because
Leif:she failed your test and then you still fucking got with her.
Leif:What? What do you think,
Leif:katherine?
Steve:She said something to me that no one else
Steve:would ever say to me.
Leif:Yeah, him. And they m need to see the same therapist.
Leif:I think
Leif:they like those domineering women.
Leif:Katherine. And nothing needs to be said there.
Leif:She's going down well.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:in more ways than what.
Steve:Yeah, clearly Nate. Yeah.
Leif:Because he's just back to being exactly where he was in
Leif:season one.
Steve:Yeah. I should have had Nate going down, too, if I didn't say
Steve:that I originally had him as going up. And I
Steve:don't know where I think that I meant to write eric, but I put
Steve:Nate.
Leif:And then also I have Laurel.
Steve:Yeah, Laurel sucked.
Leif:Who do you have your best outfit?
Steve:I. It was. That
Steve:green scene was so,
Steve:like, so impactful to me. I have
Steve:probably Chuck's suit, but I really listed it as
Steve:a pair with Chuck and blair, the two of
Steve:them, because I felt like that whole color.
Leif:Palette, you want to give them both a half point.
Steve:Yeah, I'm going to give both Chuck and Blair a half point
Steve:because I felt like they both really,
Steve:I felt like that
Steve:complete visual is what made those outfits.
Leif:Okay. So, yeah, the fashion
Leif:was actually one of the best parts of this episode for me. Yeah, there were
Leif:several. Great. I liked Blair Blair's floral
Leif:dress when she was riding the bike. I liked Blair's Marc
Leif:Jacobs, scallop dress at the party. Nate,
Leif:Nate's the look, his party look was the one I would most want to wear
Leif:myself with, like, the relaxed sweater and just the white
Leif:t shirt and pants.
Steve:I had the thought when I saw him in that outfit, I was
Steve:like, that's probably like a
Steve:$500 t shirt and, like a
Steve:$1200 sweater.
Leif:It looked really comfortable.
Steve:It really did. But I had the same thought. Like,
Steve:that's exactly what I would want to wear. And that's probably
Steve:like, that's probably like, yeah.
Leif:But in the end, I had to give it to
Leif:Serena's Oscar dollar at the white dress. Yeah.
Leif:It was from the 2008 collection, like a
Leif:theta style.
Steve:What I thought was really funny when I was watching this the
Steve:second time, I flashed back to the last
Steve:episode, the season finale with much ado
Steve:or much I do about nothing. Where
Steve:I gave Lily's dress
Steve:the nod for the fashion, for the best
Steve:outfit of the week. And you were like, yeah, I just
Steve:don't really like white dresses that much. Then the
Steve:next episode, it's like an entire white party.
Steve:I was like, well, you're going to have to pick.
Leif:Yep.
Steve:Although they're, you know, like you said those other
Steve:outfits and, and like you said, this episode
Steve:was just very visually
Steve:appealing and I felt like they really captured
Steve:that a lot. I feel like that's this
Steve:show, though. I feel like this show does a lot to
Steve:be visually appealing. Yeah. And not just, you
Steve:know, these pretty actors, which there are
Steve:definitely a lot of pretty actors,
Steve:but they just really make every
Steve:scene something to draw your eye
Steve:and something to stand out.
Leif:Anything you want to plug or recommend this
Leif:week?
Steve:I can't think of much other than
Steve:my Twitter or not my Twitter, my, TikTok,
Steve:and my Instagram. Steve dot Marshan.
Steve:M a r c h I o NDA.
Steve:And aside from that, you know, I
Steve:did start watching the, sympathizer on
Steve:HBO, and that's a neat
Steve:show. It's a Vietnam
Steve:spy era or Vietnam era
Steve:spy thriller of a north
Steve:vietnamese spy who is in
Steve:America. And it's. It's a really cool.
Steve:It's a really cool story.
Leif:Try and check it out. for me, I started out.
Leif:I actually finished, X Men 97.
Leif:Really, really liked it. Definitely recaptured the
Leif:feeling of my youth. I was definitely a nineties kid watching
Leif:the X Men series.
Steve:I love how his will was like a fucking
Steve:St. James Bible.
Steve:When they bring out Xavier's will and it's like this
Steve:fucking, like a tome.
Steve:Yeah. Who has a
Steve:bound will?
Leif:I just really hope they. They're gonna go and they're gonna do
Leif:the onslaught story, because I know they could never really do that
Leif:in live action.
Steve:Yeah.
Leif:But it. It's not very popular, but I liked
Leif:it. It was near the end of my comic collecting run.
Leif:but, yeah, it's. It's. It happens after
Leif:Wolverine gets his adamantity and ripped out by
Leif:Magneto. And then
Leif:Xavier, wipes Magneto's mind, but
Leif:part of his, like, the evil part of him gets into
Leif:Xavier and then creates this super being
Leif:nice and.
Steve:Like, destroys the whole Marvel universe
Steve:again. Yep.

Leif:two, episode two, never been
Leif:Marcus. The max episode
Leif:preview reads, nate learns the downside
Leif:of an affair with an older woman.
Steve:I think it's really funny when the title and the
Steve:description actually don't. Don't m
Steve:match up. Yeah. Because
Steve:clearly something else is going on in this episode.
Leif:Also, I used the max episode descriptions,
Leif:which, yeah, were written way after the show came out, so
Leif:they're not afraid to drop spoilers in them.
Steve:Yeah. Okay. Yeah. And I
Steve:actually tend not to read them. I hear
Steve:you read them when we're here, but I don't read
Steve:them when I'm, I often. I see the episode titles
Steve:usually because you can't help but see.
Leif:Well, until next time, you know you love
Leif:us. Xoxo. take care.
