Episode 2

S4E02 - "Double Identity"

Paris may be for lovers, but it’s also for limping ex–playboys, scheming blondes, and royals with street-food cravings. This week, Leif and Steve dig into Gossip Girl’s two-part premiere wrap-up, where Chuck is playing at being “Henry Prince,” Blair is serving Oscar de la Renta realness, and Serena can’t help but make everything about herself.

We break down:

  • Blair’s jaw-dropping red gown and her emotional Paris bridge showdown with Chuck.
  • Nate being…well, Nate—gullible, pretty, and easily played by Juliet.
  • Dan’s accidental reunion with Vanessa (plus a suspiciously quiet stage baby).
  • Serena juggling a morgue visit, a poll about her love life, and some questionable pants.
  • That closing loft scene—one of the best group reveals Gossip Girl has ever staged.

From Harry Winston sparkle to Chuck’s dramatic cane usage, this episode had it all. Grab a croissant and join us for all the drama, fashion, and fan forum throwbacks.

Transcript
Speaker:

Steve (2): A woman can do anything

Leif:

including being a misogynist.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Steve (2): Including the being misogynist and and including being anti-feminist.

Leif:

I absolutely agree with that.

Leif:

Hey Upper Eastsiders and all you Scandal loving listeners out there,

Leif:

you just tuned into the Non-Judging Breakfast Pod where the coffee is

Leif:

strong, the waffles are fresh, and the gossip is hotter than ever.

Leif:

My name is Leif and I'm your seasoned gossip girl veteran.

Leif:

And I'm Steve, the

Leif:

Steve (2): rookie, the greenhorn, the, I don't know, Leif.

Leif:

Where am I now in season four?

Leif:

I'm not sure, but I promise you this isn't a story for little girls.

Leif:

Well, I tell

Leif:

Steve (2): you what, I'll leave you with one of my sneakers.

Leif:

And you can come find me where I live.

Leif:

Alright, so here's the deal folks.

Leif:

Leif has been watching Gossip Girl since it first aired, and

Leif:

I'm diving in for the first time.

Leif:

And together we're your dynamic duo, bringing you all the drama, romance,

Leif:

and sometimes questionable fashion choices of this iconic 2007 series.

Leif:

Bring your magnifying glasses because each week we're dissecting

Leif:

every juicy detail of the show.

Leif:

One episode at a time.

Leif:

We'll connect the dots, uncover those sneaky little Easter eggs, and of

Leif:

course, serve up some piping hot behind the scenes tee and expect some iconic

Leif:

phantom moments do because what's a deep dive without a little drama.

Leif:

Steve (2): Since we are all about inclusivity here at the Non-Judging

Leif:

Breakfast Pod, there is always a room for you at the non-judging breakfast table.

Leif:

So go ahead and grab a cup of coffee, a mimosa, or see if you can dial up Chuck's

Leif:

dealer and let's go ahead and get started.

Leif:

Does

Leif:

Chuck have a

Leif:

Steve (2): dealer in Paris?

Leif:

He said he is got a guy to get him passports.

Leif:

I'm sure he is.

Leif:

Got someone who can get him drugs.

Leif:

Probably Prague two?

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

How far is prog from Prague from Paris?

Leif:

I mean, it's Europe's uh, it's all like right next to each other in my mind.

Leif:

Uh, I'd probably, it's probably like a seven hour.

Leif:

Like drive maybe.

Leif:

How much by river

Leif:

for a

Leif:

Steve (2): body

Leif:

anyway.

Leif:

Well, no.

Leif:

So he, they came to Paris to sell the rain.

Leif:

'cause they couldn't, he said, he says they couldn't se sell it

Leif:

at their usual house of product, so they brought it to Harry West.

Leif:

Right.

Leif:

And then that's why the bot Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And then somehow they got robbed in Paris in shots.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Uh, Paris is such a dangerous city.

Leif:

We are here to talk about season four, episode two.

Leif:

A double identity.

Leif:

The original air date was September 20th, 2010.

Leif:

I, I went

Leif:

Steve (2): into this episode prepared to hate it because I was mad about

Leif:

the, the chuck stuff at the end of the first episode of the season.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

Which I thought that was really the only thing I didn't like about it.

Leif:

And then when I saw that we're doing an episode about it, I

Leif:

was, which I knew had to happen.

Leif:

I was prepared not to like this episode.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

It really is a two part premiere.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

It, it really is.

Leif:

And, and it's funny 'cause there was like a two part finale and a two

Leif:

part premiere and I kind of wanted to talk about this that I noticed

Leif:

the end of season three was the first season to end solid, solid, solid.

Leif:

Like the last like three episodes I felt were really

Leif:

good solid Gossip Girl episodes.

Leif:

Whereas the ends of season one and two were where things just fell apart

Leif:

with Georgina coming back after the writer's strike or the whole Poppy

Leif:

Gabriel storyline that just wasn't holding up to everything else.

Leif:

I thought that this.

Leif:

Was a strong start after coming off of a strong finish from the previous season.

Leif:

So the episode title is based on the movie of the same title.

Leif:

Uh, double Identity came out in 2009, uh, in Sophia Bulgaria in 1992.

Leif:

And American Doctor Takes a detour in life when he helps a mysterious woman

Leif:

escape from her would be assailant and becomes a victim of mistaken

Leif:

Identity as seen in the AFF athlete Hitchcock Classic, north by Northwest.

Leif:

And it was directed by Dennis Dimer and Stars, Val Kilmer,

Leif:

Isabelle Miko and Jordan Fad Ham.

Leif:

I've

Leif:

Steve (2): never

Leif:

heard of it.

Leif:

Steve (2): No, it's, it's interesting to use the exact movie title

Leif:

and not Yeah, they,

Leif:

Steve (2): they, I, have they done that before?

Leif:

I feel?

Leif:

I

Leif:

believe so.

Leif:

Um, I can't think of an example at the moment, but yeah,

Leif:

I mean, well, poison Ivy.

Leif:

Oh yeah.

Leif:

Okay.

Leif:

Fair.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

So this episode, this time it was Josh Saffron with Sarah Goodman.

Leif:

So last, last two episodes were Josh Saffron.

Leif:

With Stephanie Savage.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

So I feel like he's writing the New York stuff and the women

Leif:

are writing the power stuff.

Leif:

That makes sense.

Leif:

That makes sense.

Leif:

And I also wonder who's, and I assume, and so there's also directed once

Leif:

again by Mark Pisarski, um, so I'm guessing he's doing the Paris stuff

Leif:

and I'm wondering who's directing the

Leif:

Steve (2): new side.

Leif:

Yeah, the New York side.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Because the attention is clearly on Paris.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

You, which makes sense.

Leif:

You, you're gonna need an A team and a B team and you're going to,

Leif:

if you're going to have the budget to shoot in Paris, you're gonna want

Leif:

to really throw your energy there.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Uh, definitely.

Leif:

And why don't you go ahead and give us that vulture recap.

Leif:

All right.

Leif:

Steve (2): It is a truth universally acknowledged that the second, the

Leif:

person who broke your heart appears in front of you looking sorry,

Leif:

and pathetic is the second you realize you're completely over them.

Leif:

So it was for Blair in the last night's episode of the Greatest Show of our Time.

Leif:

She's been mooning over Chuck all summer.

Leif:

I hurt all over.

Leif:

She was sobbing just last week, but from the moment she laid eyes on him in Paris,

Leif:

she no longer gave a rat's bass about him.

Leif:

I won't be pulled back into the darkness.

Leif:

She insists when Serena tells her that she's the only thing.

Leif:

That will keep him from changing his name to Jason Bourne and fleeing to Kerala.

Leif:

I've been waiting all summer to feel sparkly again.

Leif:

Fortunately, she realized there's no better way to get said sparkle back

Leif:

than by saying, I don't love you anymore, while looking fabulous in full

Leif:

length, Oscar de la Renta and dripping with Harry Winston while a chiseled,

Leif:

Parisian royal weights curbside.

Leif:

God bless her, and the writers for it.

Leif:

Not least because this was one less episode of this show to end in a ball.

Leif:

Indeed.

Leif:

And that was a awesome dress.

Leif:

It was.

Leif:

Oh my God.

Leif:

And yeah, there's no party of the week.

Leif:

This is the, is this the first episode of Gossip Girl with

Leif:

No, there's supposed to be,

Leif:

I feel like there's been others.

Leif:

Again, I'm, I'm not thinking of an example at the moment, but I

Leif:

thought there's been a one or two.

Leif:

Yeah, I'm not sure.

Leif:

Uh, off, off the top of my head, I mean, so we get into act one

Leif:

with Gossip Girls Monologue.

Leif:

Summer is coming to a close as everyone knows, Paris, like the Upper East Side,

Leif:

empties out in August, leaving behind only the tourist and the Dreamers lamenting

Leif:

the imminent return to real life.

Leif:

Blair and Serena are once again chatting at an outdoor cafe in Paris.

Leif:

They discuss Serena's upcoming choice between Dan and Nate.

Leif:

And Blair getting a second date with Prince Louis.

Leif:

Serena is so

Leif:

Steve (2): fucking Serena in this whole thing of just, of course, these guys are

Leif:

just waiting for me, and they kind of are.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

But e especially Nate, whereas Dan is preoccupied, but just this whole to the

Leif:

point where there's a Gossip Girl poll.

Leif:

I know we're not there yet, but like.

Leif:

It is so like her.

Leif:

I also love how she, throughout the episode is comparing the two of them.

Leif:

And this is, this is the scene where Blair's like, yes, but

Leif:

Dan, but Humphrey is the donut.

Leif:

Uh, but also, once again, Blair somehow gets a second chance despite

Leif:

failing the Royals te initial test.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

She failed the test.

Leif:

What's the point of the test, right?

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

It's a, it's a multi-layered test.

Leif:

The first layer is, are you hot?

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Then

Leif:

there other layers don't necessarily matter.

Leif:

Serena gets a call from Lily who tells her about the call she got about Chuck.

Leif:

The Paris police needs someone to identify the body that washed up in

Leif:

the river, and Serena is the obvious choice and she's already in Paris.

Leif:

Steve (2): I kind of really went through my head about this a little bit that

Leif:

like, should Serena be the one to identify this body, it would be the

Leif:

quickest and easiest person to, and Lily even says, I will fly out there.

Leif:

This is too much.

Music:

Yeah.

Music:

Steve (2): So I think that Lily recognizes the weight she's putting on Serena.

Music:

Oh, yeah.

Music:

And I don't know if Serena really recognizes the weight of what she's

Music:

been asked to do, but I do know that Lily, like she said, she was

Music:

like, I'll, I will fly out there right now if I'm asking too much.

Music:

Yeah.

Music:

I, I think it is a lot to put on a, on a 19-year-old, 18, 19-year-old,

Leif:

Julia and Nate are recounting the many exploits of Serena

Leif:

while walking down the street.

Leif:

Juliet volunteers as Nate's life coach for 24 hours, so he can eliminate Dan

Leif:

as competition for Serena's heart.

Leif:

Steve (2): Oh, poor dumb.

Leif:

Nate, you are so dumb.

Leif:

You are so Nate, and you are

Leif:

so dumb.

Leif:

Oh, has yeah.

Leif:

Reference to Serena dating your stepbrother.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

I, I loved

Leif:

Steve (2): that because, well, and you also, he's relaying all of this drama

Leif:

on her, and you get the idea that this entire story is being told, leading up

Leif:

to this scene, but we as an audience know that she knows all of this.

Leif:

So you wonder when she says, man, if they were related, you gotta wonder

Leif:

if that was her trying to just throw out more for him to, to feed off of,

Leif:

you know, she's, she's very good at playing this slow game with Nate,

Leif:

but I also, yeah, normally exposition can be.

Leif:

But for some reason, I love what Gossip Girl does, the little exposition

Leif:

stuff to like, just to like lay out how ridiculous the row plots are.

Leif:

Oh

Leif:

Steve (2): no, I absolutely agree.

Leif:

I, I do love how they do that.

Leif:

I also love when they, later in this episode when they give us

Leif:

a whole backstory on thieves.

Leif:

You know, like, but you're exactly right that when they give us these

Leif:

snippets of how ridiculous this show is that, that they know when you hear

Leif:

all laid out like that.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Uh, Serita meets with a stereotypical French inspector at the morgue to

Leif:

potentially identify Chuck's body.

Leif:

Steve (2): And even though it's not Chuck, she now has a dead

Leif:

body that she has in her psyche.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Going forward, which is the thing that

Leif:

a body that was in water.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Leif:

It's not gonna be a pretty, yeah, I, when I was 12, I, I went to an open

Leif:

casket funeral for a scoutmaster, and that fucked me up for years.

Leif:

So, like, I can't imagine seeing a, you know, a bloated, washed up corpse.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

But then, then you also have the relief of like, that's not my

Leif:

stepbrother, one of my stepbrothers.

Leif:

That's the stepbrother I haven't slept with.

Leif:

Not that he hasn't tried, not that he hasn't tried.

Leif:

And also, I'm just gonna throw yet in there, because we've still got

Leif:

almost three whole seasons left here.

Leif:

Oh.

Leif:

Chuck is in bed with Ava.

Leif:

Ava wants to bone all day.

Leif:

But New Chuck or Henry is all about being a diligent worker, Henry Prince.

Leif:

Steve (2): I, I, like I said, I wanted to hate this whole episode because I hated

Leif:

the Henry Prince and I, but I didn't,

Leif:

I I And the show, once again, wasting a perfect opportunity to

Leif:

let Ed use his real accident for this whole Henry Prince persona.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

He was, he took it from Shakespeare.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Steve (2): Like, run an accent, bro.

Leif:

You're hiding out.

Leif:

Speak naturally.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

What if he's, what if he's gotten so bad at his American accent that he no longer

Leif:

can talk in, in his actual accent either?

Leif:

What if he just doesn't know how to speak anymore?

Leif:

Oh boy.

Leif:

Boy, me because he, because the only British accents he's heard has been people

Leif:

like, you know, the Duke and Marcus.

Leif:

Dan is singing lullabies to Milo at the Loft when Nate and Juliet show up.

Leif:

Nate is definitely not a baby guy, and immediately passes Milo off to Juliet.

Leif:

So Dan and Nate can talk.

Leif:

Steve (2): What I've found really funny about this scene is Dan's

Leif:

sitting there singing to the baby and like, I, I don't know what the

Leif:

word is, but bouncing, I guess, bouncing the baby and singing to him.

Leif:

And they come in and he gives him to Nate, and Nate's like,

Leif:

oh, I don't know what I'm doing.

Leif:

And Juliette's like, he just needs a woman's touch.

Leif:

But I wanna point out that through all of that, that baby's not fussy, not

Leif:

like, not the least bit cranky, fussy.

Leif:

That's a stage baby.

Leif:

That yes, and that baby looks very content like.

Leif:

That's how you want babies to be all the time.

Leif:

Little, little coups, little voice, little bit here and there.

Leif:

Yeah, that's, you want that?

Leif:

Dan and Nate sit down at the kitchen to table to chat about Serena.

Leif:

Dan is surprised to hear that Serena's going to Columbia and we'll be back in the

Leif:

city when Dan hops up to grab a diaper.

Leif:

Nate sneaks a peek at Dan's phone and sees a text from Serena.

Leif:

Juliet.

Leif:

Uh, Juliet comes out and tosses some gasoline on Nate's fire.

Leif:

Nate.

Leif:

Steve (2): The way phones work is that when it says new text message,

Leif:

that means they haven't read it yet.

Leif:

That's just how phones work.

Leif:

So take, take that information with you next time.

Leif:

Hey.

Leif:

Okay, let's just congratulate it for being, uh, able to actually read the text.

Leif:

It was under 200 pages.

Leif:

Steve (2): He was a, he sounded

Leif:

out all the letters.

Leif:

Chuck is leaving for work for the day and starts to hobble down the street and with

Leif:

his new cane as Chuck is crossing the street, Blair's car screeches to a halt.

Leif:

And the two former lovers lock eyes, what are we stopping for pedestrians now

Leif:

Steve (2): run 'em down.

Leif:

It was good and, and it was a nice moment and I really like what this moment

Leif:

leads to and I think the next scene or a couple scenes from now when she's

Leif:

with Serena, so I'll comment on that.

Leif:

I will say though, the uh, uh, I guess stunt choreography.

Leif:

Of the scene not, not great.

Leif:

Oh, no, because he, he was nowhere near getting hit.

Leif:

No.

Leif:

The budget, it's like he, it like the car breaks and then he walks up

Leif:

and like almost walks into the car.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

With has already stopped.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

They,

Leif:

Steve (2): they definitely put the budget into getting

Leif:

to Paris, not into the stunts.

Leif:

Uh, he, I, I'll do my

Leif:

own stunts

Leif:

and gossip Girl takes us to the first break with.

Leif:

They say it's easy to forget your troubles when the weather is warm,

Leif:

but all it takes is one fall breeze to blow reality right back in your face.

Leif:

Watch out Blair.

Leif:

He who sows the wind, reaps the storm.

Leif:

Act two begins, Juliet and Vanessa bring groceries back to the loft.

Leif:

Then Vanessa, AKA, the baby whisperer makes a beeline for Milo.

Leif:

Juliette is using Vanessa to take Dan out of this arena equation, but

Leif:

of course, in a nice way because Nate doesn't go in for scheming.

Leif:

Yeah, I liked

Leif:

Steve (2): Vanessa this whole episode.

Leif:

I really had no issue with her and I like that she's taken on this parental role or,

Leif:

or even just not even like parental, like.

Leif:

Just a, well, maybe parental, but this role with Milo that she is helping

Leif:

Dan with the baby, which really tracks that she's helping her best friend.

Leif:

And when she makes the comment about how when you grow up on a commune, you

Leif:

clock a lot of babysitting hours, so it makes sense that she's good with kids.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

I also kind of thought that granted her mom is also garbage, but I feel

Leif:

like maybe Vanessa has the best shot at being a decent mom out of

Leif:

the women on Gossip Girl right now.

Music:

Yeah.

Music:

Steve (2): You know, because she's always the one that's broken

Leif:

away from her mom.

Leif:

Steve (2): Exactly.

Leif:

She's self-aware.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And she knows that and, and she knows that the shit with her mom.

Leif:

Isn't right.

Leif:

The, the shit her mom does isn't right.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

So she wants that relationship with a kid.

Leif:

So I, I do think that she'd probably be the best mom of the gossip girl kids.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Fair.

Leif:

Blair and Serena are discussing the Gossip Girl poll of Nate

Leif:

or Dan, but Serena shifts the conversation to a more serious topic.

Leif:

Serena brings up her trip to the morgue and the fact that Chuck

Leif:

has been missing all summer.

Leif:

Blair says to call off the Hounds because she just saw Chuck an hour ago and assumes

Leif:

Chuck is just in Paris stalking her.

Leif:

Serena wants to Blair to go talk to Chuck to see if he's all right, but Blair

Leif:

doesn't want to be late for her date.

Leif:

Steve (2): So this is what I was talking about a second ago, the setup for this

Leif:

scene where Blair is like, Chuck's fine.

Leif:

No, I saw him.

Leif:

He just limped off afterwards.

Leif:

Like clearly he's hurt with something, he's walking with a cane, but she's.

Leif:

It's fine.

Leif:

Like, I saw him, he's fucking fine.

Leif:

Let's get on with this.

Leif:

Let's move on.

Leif:

And honestly, throughout this whole episode, I'm kind of like, yeah, Blair,

Leif:

like, why are you chasing this guy down?

Leif:

Let just let him go.

Leif:

Which Blair is so ready to do right now,

Leif:

speaking of the can, why is getting shot in the gut require a cane

Leif:

Steve (2): as, as somebody who walks with a cane for one.

Leif:

Here's what's also funny is that he walks on the wrong side of the cane,

Leif:

that when you walk with a cane, you don't use it to prop up the side that is weak.

Leif:

You use it to steady the side that is strong, right?

Leif:

So my left leg is weak.

Leif:

I walk with the cane in my right hand because you have it basically,

Leif:

you, you want your, the swing of your arm to match the swing of your foot.

Leif:

So I get more.

Leif:

Support by having my right leg, my right hand, my left leg forward, and my

Leif:

right leg back, I've become a tripod.

Leif:

So that's why you walk with a cane.

Leif:

That way, if you're just limping along, you're actually doing

Leif:

your body so much damage because you're misaligning your spine.

Leif:

So like the, the, just the whole thing just kind of cracked me up.

Leif:

That, that like, also, like you said about getting shot in the gut, I mean,

Leif:

yeah, there's gonna be muscle damage or something like that, but a cane.

Leif:

That this long after recovery then, then he goes and starts walking at a shop.

Leif:

You can't be a waiter and have a cane.

Leif:

So yeah,

Leif:

it's just for dramatic purposes.

Leif:

Speaking of which, yes, Chuck is working at a pub and is literally

Leif:

helping an old man down the steps.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Emma comes to take Chuck out on a break, but spooked by seeing Blair.

Leif:

Chuck wants to leave Paris for India.

Leif:

Emma is worried they don't have the money, but Chuck tells her he might

Leif:

have an idea about the finances.

Leif:

I think I know how we can handle

Leif:

Steve (2): it.

Leif:

No, no, no.

Leif:

I know a guy, he's me.

Leif:

Do we?

Leif:

Does he have the cane in the rest of the episode?

Leif:

I don't know if he does.

Leif:

Yeah,

Leif:

he does.

Leif:

He does.

Leif:

Okay.

Leif:

He has at the train station too.

Leif:

Okay.

Leif:

Okay.

Leif:

Rufuss gets off the phone with the doctor who did the paternity test,

Leif:

but can't get any more information.

Leif:

Lily is going to the loft to help convert Cheney's older room into a nursery, but

Leif:

Rufuss is going to stay at home and pout.

Leif:

Steve (2): I really loved Lily in this episode.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Rufuss is 100% in his right to be skeptical that that baby is

Leif:

not Dan's and has every reason to have Dan get that information.

Leif:

For sure.

Leif:

What Rufuss is failing to realize is that no matter who that kid

Leif:

came out of, and no matter who's.

Leif:

Who fathered that kid That is a baby who needs love and who needs to be taken

Leif:

care of, and who needs to be changed and fed and held and all of that stuff.

Leif:

And it doesn't fucking matter whose kid it is.

Leif:

That baby needs parents right now.

Music:

Yeah.

Music:

Steve (2): And Dan is doing that and Vanessa is doing that.

Music:

And that baby would be much better off with grandparents right now.

Music:

And Lily knows that.

Music:

Lily, it is not focused on whose baby it is.

Music:

She's focused on.

Music:

It's not hers.

Music:

Yeah, it's not.

Music:

It's not hers.

Music:

So she's going to be a good parent

Leif:

while Dan is sleeping on the couch.

Leif:

Juliet lies to Vanessa telling her that Dan still has feelings for her.

Leif:

Nate looks shocked at first, but decides to go along with it.

Leif:

Steve (2): Nate.

Leif:

Oh,

Leif:

Steve (2): Nate, just golden retriever Nate.

Leif:

He's just so played this whole

Leif:

episode.

Leif:

Serena finds Ava, uh, Serena finds Ava's uncle and learns that Chuck slash Henry

Leif:

has been working for him as a waiter.

Leif:

Serena begs for his help finding her missing stepbrother.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

Who doesn't want to be found, but Serena has to save the day and Serena has to go

Leif:

save Chuck because he could be in trouble.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

But like doesn't realize that finding him, if he is in trouble finding him, is

Leif:

the thing that'll put him in more danger

Leif:

after their apartment, Chuck dumps a bunch of cash

Leif:

out on the bed in front of Ava.

Leif:

They now have the money to get to India.

Leif:

When Serena knocks on the door, Chuck just plays dumb and

Leif:

acts like he's never met her.

Leif:

Steve (2): Shuts the door right in her face too.

Leif:

Damn.

Leif:

Uh,

Leif:

Serena with her little o face at Gossip Girl takes us to the act break with

Leif:

Holy Bruce Wayne Batman.

Leif:

It's one thing to hide who you really are.

Leif:

It's another to pretend you don't exist.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Act three begins.

Leif:

Blair is eating street food with Louis as they walk along the river sand.

Leif:

Louis invites her to the ball tonight.

Leif:

Steve (2): I love how this royal is out here walking with minimal security.

Leif:

I know there's like a dude with them, but there's like minimal security

Leif:

for this royal going to get street food, which I found interesting

Leif:

also, when he, well did, I mean, did you, did you catch the beginning of the

Leif:

episode where Blair says she's trying to.

Leif:

Prove she's not that she's of the

Leif:

Steve (2): people.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

Well, and he says the thing about like the, the drive through the countryside.

Leif:

And she looks disappointed at first until he says, like, for this big ball.

Leif:

And it's funny 'cause it's like, Blair don't look disappointed in anything if

Leif:

you're like, don't be like, oh, I, I don't wanna see the fucking countryside.

Leif:

So did you recognize the bridge?

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

The the lock bridge?

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

In the, yeah.

Leif:

Um, so that, that is a fairly recent tradition with the locks.

Leif:

It's not a Parisian tradition is Taurus, that scans, which it started about 2008

Leif:

and it's been a serious like, issue.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

I, I've heard that they like don't want people doing it.

Leif:

They started like, for a while they were like just cutting them off and,

Leif:

but people just kept putting about.

Leif:

Millions.

Leif:

Literally millions and like, like 45 tons worth of locks have been removed.

Leif:

So finally at some point they replaced it with, uh, instead of having a

Leif:

chain link fence, there's like glass paddles down, so you can't do it.

Leif:

But, but, but some artists have painted locks on there.

Leif:

Steve (2): That's skids.

Leif:

That's skids.

Leif:

That's really funny though.

Leif:

But the bridge has appeared in quite a bit of a popular culture.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Notably, though, 1995 remake of Sabrina, which was of course,

Leif:

originally in 1954 with Audrey Hepburn.

Leif:

Audrey Hepburn.

Leif:

Right,

Leif:

Steve (2): right.

Leif:

Oh, of course.

Leif:

Because that the remake was Harrison Ford, right?

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Wait, I thought you said that the, oh, so there were no locks.

Leif:

The lock tradition hadn't started by then?

Leif:

No.

Leif:

Oh, wow.

Leif:

That's, that's interesting too.

Leif:

And it was also featured in the series finale of Sex and the City.

Leif:

Steve (2): Oh, okay.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

I think I remember that.

Leif:

I think that's, that might be the first time

Leif:

I knew about that bridge.

Leif:

Dan wakes up and finds Vanessa has cooked him a feast.

Leif:

Dan still exhausted and mixes up his feelings of friendship, gratefulness

Leif:

and sexual attraction for Vanessa and decides to go to Pound Town.

Leif:

Yeah, I mean

Leif:

Steve (2): it, it's such a natural thing.

Leif:

And of course Dan doesn't know that Vanessa has been given bad information.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

But it's not that Dan doesn't also feel things, you know, the Vanessa goes in

Leif:

for it and he goes right along with it.

Leif:

It's.

Leif:

Yeah, he's been, he's been exhausted for weeks.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

I mean that's just shows up.

Leif:

She cooks all this food for him.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

So like who was his girlfriend?

Leif:

Care with baby.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

And it was his girlfriend.

Leif:

You know, it's not like, it makes a lot of sense, you know, even for them

Leif:

just to get back together like mm-hmm.

Leif:

For Dan to be, yeah.

Leif:

There's absolutely no shade on any one of these two people for what happened

Leif:

here and I'm kind of glad, well, we'll get to that in a little bit.

Leif:

Also, I wanna point out that Lily said that she was leaving like three

Leif:

scenes ago and I know she had to go shopping in everything first, but it

Leif:

does take an unusually long amount of time for her to get them loft.

Leif:

Serena's waiting outside for Chuck.

Leif:

She begs him to come home, but he informs her that he's on his way to

Leif:

get a new passport and that after today there won't be a Chuck Bass anymore.

Leif:

And

Leif:

Steve (2): Chuck, it's very dramatic, but I kind of get it.

Leif:

And Serena just let him go.

Leif:

He's kind of an asshole.

Leif:

Post quiets.

Leif:

Dan learns to lie that Nate told Vanessa, and you

Leif:

Steve (2): feel for Dan here.

Leif:

'cause again, like he didn't know that this was brought on by bad information.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

And I think that the way everything turns out, he is glad it happened, but

Leif:

he feels shitty that like, oh man, she thinks we're getting back together.

Leif:

Or she thinks there's something else here that I haven't really explored yet.

Leif:

Blair is prepping for the royal ball picking from amongst a full rack of gowns.

Leif:

Louis has sent over.

Leif:

Serena starts to tell Blair about Chuck, but then says not

Leif:

to worry and enjoy her date.

Leif:

As Blair gets back to prepping, she doesn't see Serena gets a envelope

Leif:

delivered inside A note from Chuck.

Leif:

Along with his shares of the empire and Bass industries.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

And then Serena.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Feels like she has to meddle even more.

Leif:

It's her brother.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

It is, isn't it?

Leif:

Juliet is trying to find a hot blonde to be Nate's escort

Leif:

when Serena gets back in town.

Leif:

Nate is about to suggest Juliet herself when he gets an accusatory text from Dan.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

Again, this the way that Juliet is just playing Nate this whole time, and like for

Leif:

Nate to be like, oh, she won't be jealous of the person that you're picking out.

Leif:

She would only be jealous of someone like, oh wait, like

Leif:

the shiny thing in front of me.

Leif:

Like, it's so Nate to just

Leif:

fall to be so easily led into this.

Leif:

I mean, he's been trying to flirt with her for, you know, since,

Leif:

Steve (2): since, since he met her.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Oh, oh, of course.

Leif:

Which is also really funny that he was trying to flirt with her and she's like

Leif:

following him around everywhere He goes from the beginning of this episode, from

Leif:

the end of last week when he shows up at Chuck's apartment with all of these women

Leif:

going crazy in there, playing rock band.

Leif:

And then the beginning of this episode, she's just hanging around.

Leif:

So like, yeah, it's, you're so dumb.

Leif:

Blair is decked out in a gorgeous red Oscar de la renta gown when one of

Leif:

Louis's man service shows up to escort and excited Blair to Harry Winston For one

Leif:

final touch, Blair gets a text from Serena about Chuck, but decides to ignore it.

Leif:

Blair leaves her phone on the table and Serena leaves a voicemail saying

Leif:

that Chuck is in real trouble.

Leif:

He's not.

Leif:

He's

Leif:

Steve (2): not in any trouble at all.

Leif:

He's in no trouble.

Leif:

He is escaping all of his trouble.

Leif:

He's, he's leaving there.

Leif:

There's absolutely no trouble that Chuck is in for the first time Chuck is

Leif:

leaving because he isn't in any trouble.

Leif:

I, I also wanted to point out that both times that we watched this Robin Squealed

Leif:

when Blair was being told that she was getting being taken to Harry Winston both

Leif:

times.

Leif:

Well, gas Grill has this to say about it

Leif:

spotted one American leaving Paris.

Leif:

Oh.

Leif:

Steve (2): I wanted to mention something about Gossip Girl here that

Leif:

I feel like these last two episodes.

Leif:

Gossip Girl has been playing a role more.

Leif:

The character of Gossip Girl, I feel has been more present in these

Leif:

first two episodes than the tone that was set in the previous season.

Leif:

That Gossip Girl was kind of in and out of college, but we didn't

Leif:

rely on Gossip Girl for much of the character stuff that was going on.

Leif:

Whereas now the character in both episodes has been a little

Leif:

bit more forthright and Right.

Leif:

When this mysterious person shows up.

Leif:

Right, right.

Leif:

When this mysterious person shows up, yes.

Leif:

And we get into Act four, Serena gets a call from the inspector and

Leif:

has to go get something from him.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Blair is at Harry Winston trying on a necklace when she

Leif:

spots a huge engagement ring.

Leif:

Serena and the inspector show up and explain that that is Chuck's ring and

Leif:

that he got shot trying to protect it.

Leif:

But Blair, why did

Leif:

Steve (2): you pick the weirdest necklace in the plate?

Leif:

Like, I didn't think that went with that.

Leif:

She has this amazing dress.

Leif:

I didn't think that the necklace that she picked really went with the dress.

Leif:

I liked it.

Leif:

Steve (2): I thought it was too boxy and colorful.

Leif:

Very colorful for, well,

Leif:

it was a very, the whole alpha was very fruity.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Seemed I could see that.

Leif:

It was, she was, the dress was like one of those that, uh, old image of like

Leif:

the woman with the fruit on her head.

Leif:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

That's fair.

Leif:

I see that.

Leif:

Not, not fruity in a, not like that, like actual fruit.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Nate comes back to the loft and he and Dan let it all out.

Leif:

It turns out that Dan never even saw the text from Serena

Leif:

and that Nate got one too.

Leif:

Vanessa then comes out of the bedroom and learns that Nate lied to her, and

Leif:

that Serena's after both the guys, Vanessa storms off and Lily shows up

Leif:

with the, for the nursery makeover.

Leif:

Great scene.

Leif:

Steve (2): I applaud Dan for just coming out with it, that there's, you know,

Leif:

on gossip, bro, there's a lot of times that some like Vanessa comes out and

Leif:

asks the question, Dan doesn't cover.

Leif:

Dan's like, we both got this text from Serena and Nate lied to you and.

Leif:

There's no coverup.

Leif:

There's no lies.

Leif:

It's just, I'm really sorry.

Leif:

And like, I, I really don't know.

Leif:

I, I don't know what I'm thinking right now because I don't, didn't

Leif:

know all of this information.

Leif:

Now, this, the show is ever gonna explore some polyamory.

Leif:

This could be a, you know, could opportunity for it.

Leif:

Steve (2): I, Robin and I said the same thing, that the best

Leif:

solution would be a throuple.

Leif:

No, all four of 'em.

Leif:

Or, or I was gonna say, or all four of them.

Leif:

Or all five of them.

Leif:

Wait, he's the fifth.

Leif:

Uh, Juliet.

Leif:

Juliet, you know.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

For a little while.

Leif:

She's got, she seems like she's evil.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And Blair's

Leif:

single right now.

Leif:

Get her in the mix.

Leif:

Serena tells Blair that Chuck has signed everything over to Lily and

Leif:

that Blair is the only one who can stop him from disappearing forever.

Leif:

Blair hesitates but says that she has a ball to attend.

Leif:

Serena follows Blair outside to a waiting Lou.

Leif:

When Serena gives Blair one last plea.

Leif:

Blair is caught looking between her and Louis as it cuts to commercial break.

Leif:

Uh, once again,

Leif:

Steve (2): this isn't Blair's responsibility.

Leif:

Like, let him go, let Chuck go disappear.

Leif:

And I real, I obviously the watcher of the show and the meta knowledge of the show,

Leif:

you can't just write Chuck off like that.

Leif:

But also he, it is not like he's gone forever.

Leif:

He sold off his stuff.

Leif:

He'll be back.

Leif:

You

Leif:

know, like, or if you really need to find him, you can find him.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

Or if you really need to find him, he

Leif:

does.

Leif:

He doesn't have money anymore, so he can't hide anymore.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Steve (2): And, and you know, his, he, he, he has a new passport.

Leif:

You just need to get his new name.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Which you probably got from the bar guy,

Leif:

Steve (2): right?

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

My contact,

Leif:

we go into act five, Dan and Nate grab a couple of beers and head

Leif:

up to the roof to hash things out.

Leif:

I liked it.

Leif:

Little bro time.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah, a little bro time.

Leif:

I love that Dan doesn't hold a grudge, that he's just kind of, I

Leif:

love that Dan's whole persona right now is I'm a little too exhausted

Leif:

to give a shit about anything else.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Which makes sense.

Leif:

It tracks.

Leif:

I've been a dad three times over and especially the first one where every

Leif:

sound they make you go running 'cause you don't know because it's new.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

It is exhausting.

Leif:

And I had the luxury of working full-time.

Leif:

Right.

Leif:

My ex was the one staying home with the baby who Bailey was on a terrible

Leif:

sleep schedule for their first like three, four months of life.

Leif:

That, that while my ex would take care of Bailey more.

Leif:

It would still be keeping me up.

Leif:

And then weekends it was mostly me.

Leif:

And I even still, like, even though I wasn't home with the baby, I was

Leif:

still up at night taking care of taking care of them a lot of the time.

Leif:

It's exhausting.

Leif:

And in, in Dan's case, he's been alone for at least for a few weeks now.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

With the only help being Vanessa who doesn't live there,

Leif:

sees I'm here, begins to play as we see Blair exit a cab in her red gown.

Leif:

She runs past a confused Ava.

Leif:

Ava then sees Serena exit the cab and begins to figure out who Blair is.

Leif:

And you feel for her?

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

Because she's like, I

Leif:

Steve (2): knew it was too good to be true.

Leif:

Yeah, I, I knew, yeah.

Leif:

I'm about to run away with this guy.

Leif:

And what's also funny is that she sees this woman, just a random woman go

Leif:

running by her in a dress and knows.

Leif:

Well, it's what it, she knows when she sees Serena following her.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

'cause she's never preserved from before.

Leif:

Steve (2): Right.

Leif:

And, and talks to Serena about it.

Leif:

And just the way that she pieces it together, you feel

Leif:

for

Leif:

Steve (2): her?

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

The song continues and Blair sees Chuck and the two come together on the

Leif:

pedestrian bridge over the Paris Rail.

Leif:

They have a heartfelt conversation and when Blair returns the ring to

Leif:

Chuck, she then tells him, I don't love you anymore, but it takes more

Leif:

than even you to destroy Blair Waldorf.

Leif:

Chuck responds.

Leif:

Your old would be easier if I didn't come back.

Leif:

That's true.

Leif:

She stutters, but it wouldn't be my world without you in it.

Leif:

God damn

Leif:

Steve (2): amazing scene.

Leif:

Yeah, I, I definitely got a little gossip girl in my eye watching that scene.

Leif:

It was strong.

Leif:

It was powerful.

Leif:

He talks about Lily, like how.

Leif:

I don't remember if he says it now or if he said it to Serena about

Leif:

Lily being glad that he'd be gone.

Leif:

That before was it before I actually meant to address that

Leif:

too, because Lily has fought so fucking hard for that relationship.

Leif:

But that, that line, it wouldn't be my world without you in it.

Leif:

And, and let's also just talk about the cinematography of this scene

Leif:

that, that these shots, the shadows on the faces and the beautiful

Leif:

background of the train station.

Leif:

It was just absolutely gorgeous.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And, and also the juxtaposition of, of country casual Chuck and Royal Ballroom.

Leif:

Blair also just really made the, the colors of this scene really tie together

Leif:

where she kind of echoed the colors of the station and he echoed the colors

Leif:

of the windows in the background.

Leif:

It's just brilliant design all around kudos to, to, uh, Eric Damon

Leif:

and for, you know, just how that, how the costuming just tied into

Leif:

this beautiful scene so well too.

Leif:

So you, you called Chucks out the country casual.

Leif:

Personally, I was thinking of it as, uh, with the Cane.

Leif:

Jim e Cricket,

Leif:

tiny Tim.

Leif:

Uh, we move into the epilogue.

Leif:

Serena is back in New York and on the phone with Blair who is still in Paris.

Leif:

Blair is still asking Serena, who she's choosing.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

'cause she's gotta get that Gossip girl poll.

Leif:

Right.

Leif:

Juliet apologize to Nate for meddling in his life and

Leif:

the two agree to be friends.

Leif:

Juliet says she also wants to apologize to Dan,

Leif:

which is, it's the most suss

Leif:

Steve (2): thing, but only I Sure.

Leif:

It's probably only because of my meta knowledge or because of my,

Leif:

the meta knowledge of just how the gossip girl universe acts.

Leif:

But I'd like to apologize to Dan too.

Music:

Hmm.

Leif:

Text him.

Leif:

But I mean, that's something Nate would totally do is right.

Leif:

If they felt he was in the wrong, he would go to that person and,

Leif:

and say you he was in the wrong.

Leif:

Exactly.

Leif:

Steve (2): So it doesn't trigger, it doesn't,

Leif:

it doesn't set off any red flags to him.

Leif:

Dan and Vanessa are walking in a park.

Leif:

Dan tells her that he's not thinking about Serena anymore

Leif:

and wants to be with Vanessa.

Leif:

Steve (2): I, there's also a tiny bit of puppy dog and Dan, I feel sometimes I,

Leif:

I think it's, he's a Labrador retriever.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

He's a Labrador.

Leif:

Well, and you know, men of men of that age, when they have the sex in front

Leif:

of them, tend to go to where the sex is

Leif:

and, and not just the sex, but also cooking for him.

Leif:

Taking care of his kid.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Where where it a letting him getting a nap for the first time in like weeks.

Leif:

Exactly.

Leif:

Steve (2): There's a lot that Vanessa is doing.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

At the same time, they never broke up.

Leif:

He just kind of cheated on her.

Leif:

With Serena, which it was what a kiss and slept in the same room together.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

So it was something that I feel most couples could work through anyway.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

It was the fact that Dan then had these lingering feelings that never got brought

Leif:

up and never got talked about, and it was just assumed we are not together because,

Leif:

well, Vanessa didn't know about that.

Leif:

'cause she, like, at first he was trying to call her and she

Leif:

wouldn't answer any of his calls.

Leif:

And then he was, the last thing we saw was he was going to go after Serena, but

Leif:

then got, you know, Georgina showed up.

Leif:

Steve (2): Well, but I'm even talking about last week

Leif:

when, when Vanessa returns.

Leif:

Right.

Leif:

That, that even then they're not getting back together.

Leif:

They're like, we had a split, but they never stopped to talk

Leif:

about their issues, which Dan says in this one, in this episode.

Leif:

But I wanted to also point out that it, that Dan to stop and be like.

Leif:

You are the one I want.

Leif:

You are the one I want to be with.

Leif:

It's a dis it's a decision and it's decisive.

Leif:

And he, and it makes sense.

Leif:

So I liked it.

Leif:

See how long he sticks to it?

Leif:

Well,

Leif:

Steve (2): yeah.

Leif:

I mean, Louie invites Blair to another event, but Blair decline saying

Leif:

she has to go back to her real life.

Leif:

However, she does give him one of her shoes and tells him to come find her.

Leif:

Steve (2): Why

Leif:

Blair?

Leif:

Steve (2): Why do you need to go back to your real life other than

Leif:

you just told Chuck to go back.

Leif:

But, 'cause I mean, good for, she wants to continue college.

Leif:

'cause, you know, education has been an important thing for Blair.

Leif:

Absolutely.

Leif:

Her whole family lives in Paris, so it, it's not, you know, she's not Serena.

Leif:

She can't get into a good school at the last minute.

Leif:

Oh, that's, well that's true.

Leif:

School's about to start in like a week.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Paris Community College.

Leif:

And again, what What's he doing?

Leif:

He can come to New York.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Well that too.

Leif:

He's, he's just a royal.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Steve (2): He's just

Leif:

a life of

Leif:

Steve (2): leisurer.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Which also it's really great.

Leif:

That, which is why I like the whole like, come you, come find me.

Leif:

I do like that aspect of it.

Leif:

The Blair's like, you come find me.

Leif:

Here's my shoe.

Leif:

You'll find me.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Rufuss finally comes to the loft now.

Leif:

Now that all the work is done, he has finally relented and

Leif:

is ready to be a grandpa.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yes.

Leif:

I really hope he doesn't lose the skepticism.

Leif:

I think that you do need to know who that baby's daddy really is,

Leif:

and whether or not it's Dan's well.

Leif:

Yes, but we'll get there.

Leif:

Serena shows up to the loft and greets her mom after a summer away.

Leif:

Then Dan shows up hand in hand with Vanessa, along with Nate and Juliette.

Leif:

Then Serena gets to shock of being introduced to Dan's son, Milo.

Leif:

Steve (2): This might be one of my favorite Gossip Girl scenes so far

Leif:

that the way that this whole scene beat for beat plays out was just

Leif:

kind of perfect that Serena comes in.

Leif:

Totally excited to see everyone, eager to have the conversation with Dan and

Leif:

Nate, which honestly felt like, like you were saying, like, look boys, let's

Leif:

just all do this was really how it felt.

Leif:

She was gonna approach this situation, and she shows up ready

Leif:

to kind of have this talk with them.

Leif:

They both walk in coupled up and then, oh, and here's a baby.

Leif:

And then Vanessa being like, you saw me four months ago.

Leif:

If you think that's mine, I'm offended.

Leif:

That line was great because, because she does, she looks at Vanessa

Leif:

like, how the fuck did this happen?

Leif:

And Vanessa's like.

Leif:

Clearly it's not me.

Leif:

So yeah, since I did shoot on the choreography for the earlier scene, I,

Leif:

I will give him props for this scene.

Leif:

Al. So first, like Dan, you see Dan first, he's like, hi, Dan and Vanessa.

Leif:

And then she sees him holding hands.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And then Nate pops out from behind and, and Nate's like, and, and then Hi.

Leif:

And then this is Juliette.

Leif:

She kinda like swings out too, be honest.

Leif:

So it's like one after the other, they kind of reveal each?

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Like every, uh, again, like everything about this scene, just the flow of it.

Leif:

The beat for beat and the, even with, with Milo when he's revealed

Leif:

and then handed to Serena.

Leif:

And it's just, and it's just really nice to kind of see Serena's whole

Leif:

world come crashing down around her like this, after she's set it up.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

She's the one that said to Nate, she's the one that had.

Leif:

A suss evening with Dan and then said to Nate, look, I know you forgave me, but

Leif:

I'm not getting back together with you.

Leif:

I need the summer apart.

Leif:

And then went and banged waiters and bartenders for the entire summer.

Leif:

No shame, no shade.

Leif:

I support her decision to do that just like I supported Nate go into

Leif:

town on the little black book.

Leif:

But you both made these decisions.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And so for Serena to come back home expecting these two boys to be waiting

Leif:

for her panting at the door only to find them both booed up was, and Serena is in

Leif:

no way, shape or form going to be that mother figure to another kid's baby.

Leif:

No.

Leif:

Especially church's baby.

Leif:

No.

Leif:

That let's.

Leif:

The only thing she has going for her is that being Lily's

Leif:

daughter, she'll be better, a better mom to other people's kids.

Leif:

But there's no way that she has the capacity that Vanessa has to

Leif:

just be like, I'll play mom now.

Music:

Yeah,

Music:

Steve (2): sure.

Music:

She doesn't have that.

Leif:

Blair gets a gossip girl blast about everyone losing the

Leif:

poll about who Serena will choose.

Leif:

Blair and Serena exchanged texts while Serena fifth wheels it with

Leif:

Dan, Vanessa, Nate, and Juliet.

Leif:

Steve (2): Beautiful.

Leif:

And Blair's irk that her poll got eh shot down, but

Leif:

it's beautiful.

Leif:

Nate asked Juliette out on a date, but she says they give it a little

Leif:

time to breathe first, slow play,

Leif:

Steve (2): or she's really just not into Nate.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And it's all just a play.

Leif:

How can you not be into

Leif:

Nate though?

Leif:

He's so dreamy.

Leif:

Steve (2): He's.

Leif:

Rufuss finds Milo's blood type from the hospital ban and determines that it's

Leif:

not possible for him to be Dan's son.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah, Lily, you should listen to this.

Leif:

It's not conspiracy theory.

Leif:

I, I am team Lily on the fact that Milo needs in this moment

Leif:

parents to raise and love him.

Leif:

I also feel that they have the means that no matter whose baby this is,

Leif:

they can make sure that this baby has the best fucking life possible.

Leif:

So I really, yes, you should find out this information.

Leif:

But Lily also be a little skeptical too.

Leif:

Both things

Leif:

are true.

Leif:

Well, at this point in gossip, girls Universe, there's no need to be skeptical.

Leif:

I think they're saying it's a fact that that's not Dan's son now.

Leif:

Oh, I, I, which.

Leif:

That's not how biology works, but No, no, because there's, you know,

Leif:

recessive genes, otherwise o blood type would've gone extinct, right?

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

You can only get o from two o's then it would've gone extinct by now.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

After 10,000 years of, you know, history.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yes.

Leif:

Yeah,

Leif:

Steve (2): yeah.

Leif:

Just like left-handedness and brown eyes or blue eyes and Yes.

Leif:

My, my mom was learning genetics in high school and they told her

Leif:

that and my mom was like, wait, my friend has both, their parents have

Leif:

blue eyes and he has brown eyes.

Leif:

And her science teacher said, well, looks like the mailman did it.

Leif:

So

Leif:

they have,

Music:

uh,

Leif:

American school system at work

Leif:

Steve (2): and then you don't need to learn any more science ever again.

Leif:

'cause it doesn't evolve and never changes.

Leif:

Juliet is talking on the phone with someone and says things

Leif:

are going according to plan.

Leif:

She takes all the connections with Nate and Dan, offer Serena Murder board,

Leif:

Steve (2): and just Serena left on the Serena murder board.

Leif:

So we, we get this idea that she's gunning for Serena.

Leif:

Now, let's go to episode one, season one, episode one, when spotted Serena

Leif:

Vander Woodson at Grand Central Station coming in to back to New York.

Leif:

Do we know long how long Gossip Girl was around before that?

Leif:

I think it said, say started in eighth grade.

Leif:

Okay, so that been, so this, they were in 10th grade?

Leif:

No, they were juniors.

Leif:

So they were 11th, so that would've been ninth, 10th.

Leif:

So three years.

Leif:

Three years.

Leif:

So that's.

Leif:

Steve (2): A little interesting because it does kind of target Serena a lot.

Leif:

Right?

Leif:

Well, she was the first post canonically

Leif:

Steve (2): and she was canonically the first post.

Leif:

Correct.

Leif:

And

Leif:

yes, a 13-year-old in a See-through shirt was the first

Leif:

Steve (2): post.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Creepy.

Leif:

Steve (2): Oh boy.

Leif:

So I, I can see how they can still make us want to think that Gossip

Leif:

Girl is about taking down Serena.

Leif:

I, I believe that's what they want me to think

Leif:

right now.

Leif:

Chuck back in a full suit fights Eva and apologizes for lying to her.

Leif:

Chuck invites Eva to come to New York with him in the style of Chuck Bass.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Do we

Leif:

Steve (2): see, does she get in the car with him?

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Okay.

Leif:

I couldn't remember if we see her get in or if she's still considering it.

Leif:

And I think this is one of his best.

Leif:

I'm Chuck Bass that like, look, you're gonna be fine.

Leif:

I'm Chuck Bass.

Leif:

That, that it's not, it's not smarmy and it's not arrogant when he says

Leif:

it, it's inviting and it's meant to be comforting for the first time.

Leif:

I'm Chuck Bass isn't so much a declaration of depravity as it is,

Leif:

I'm someone who can take care of you.

Leif:

The Gossip Girl ends the episode with,

Leif:

with Dan Spotted kissing Vanessa and Nate's early morning

Leif:

coffees with a new blonde.

Leif:

It looks like the Oz Bakers have taken a beating.

Leif:

Serena Vander Whitson will be walking into Columbia's campus single.

Leif:

This poll is now closed and nobody won.

Leif:

Just as every summer ends, all tourists come home, all dreamers

Leif:

wake up and new problems are born.

Leif:

And just like that, a pretty girl's ugly secret is revealed.

Leif:

But no matter what the new season brings, will always have Paris Bezo, Bezo gossip.

Leif:

Girl.

Leif:

Steve (2): It's also interesting that this last blast is, comes off

Leif:

more of a blast than narration.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

Right?

Leif:

Because three seasons in, I've gotten to decipher the difference.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

And every now and then you get a narration that feels more like a blast.

Leif:

Right.

Leif:

Well, this

Leif:

Steve (2): definitely was

Leif:

because you see Blair

Leif:

Steve (2): actually reading it and you see Blair reading it.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

But I'm saying that you don't often see that, especially for like a closing

Leif:

mo, the closing bit, and I feel like the dagger in Blair's heart in this

Leif:

is Serena is going to school single.

Leif:

That now Serena, once again is a competition for the men of Columbia.

Leif:

We'll go back to what Jayden said about the patriarchal writing of this show,

Leif:

which I have on many occasions blasted the when Jenny's looking for a man for

Leif:

her status and all of these things.

Leif:

But it feeds into Blair Waldorf that she views her status in part by who

Leif:

is on her arm or whose arm she is on.

Leif:

And now her greatest competition that she was already mad is going to the

Leif:

same school is going in there single.

Leif:

So that's got to be weighing on Blair.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

And uh, so you get the, the line at the end there, but no matter what the new

Leif:

season brings, we'll always have Paris.

Leif:

Yeah, of course, of course.

Leif:

You know, you know the Humphrey Bogart reference.

Leif:

But, uh, hopefully it's not foreshadowing meta things to

Leif:

come about the season being bad.

Leif:

Steve (2): That's really funny because this season, the first

Leif:

two episodes were so good.

Leif:

Were, were so good.

Leif:

There has not been this good of a start to a gossip girl season yet.

Leif:

And that's really, and that really, especially the last two seasons

Leif:

started outside of the Upper East Side.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

We have this great, a great start to this season.

Leif:

These first two episodes are great and they were not entirely in New York,

Leif:

like the last two seasons did, only the last two seasons you really missed.

Leif:

New York, you really missed that Upper East side and you didn't,

Leif:

and probably because they're in the biest parts of Paris, still kind

Leif:

of living that Upper East Side.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

Attitude.

Leif:

But yeah, these are just two really solid episodes.

Leif:

But also I could see how they can fuck this up so badly.

Leif:

So badly.

Leif:

And I was even saying to Robin this morning that this show, I'm always

Leif:

hearing about how it just takes a steady decline from the beginning,

Leif:

but really after season three.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

A lot of people quit in season four.

Leif:

Wow.

Leif:

Oh boy.

Leif:

We always have Paris.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Always have Paris.

Leif:

Any predictions?

Leif:

Oh, I've got predictions.

Leif:

First of all, I predict that Juliet.

Leif:

Is not Gossip Girl.

Leif:

I predicted in episode one that it was Chuck.

Leif:

I know that they don't even know right now.

Leif:

And they may, even, the writers may think she's Gossip girl right now and may just

Leif:

change their minds in five episodes.

Leif:

I don't believe this is Gossip Girl.

Leif:

I feel like this show Gossip Girl is sexist, right?

Leif:

Gossip Girl is often body shaming and, and slut shaming women and putting women

Leif:

down and having women fight each other.

Leif:

I cannot help but feel the Gossip Girl is a man that that is just, but I, that's all

Leif:

things

Leif:

Steve (2): Blair

Leif:

does too though.

Leif:

Steve (2): So it, it is things that Blair does, but I don't

Leif:

believe Blair is Gossip girl.

Leif:

No.

Leif:

Right.

Leif:

But a woman can obviously, a woman can obviously do it.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

I am, i a woman can do anything

Leif:

including being misogynist.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Steve (2): Including the, being misogynist and, and including being anti-feminist.

Leif:

I absolutely agree with that.

Leif:

I feel like the level that Gossip Girl goes to it, and maybe I'm being sexist,

Leif:

maybe it's me thinking that men are more likely to go at women like this, and

Leif:

maybe that's my own sexism too, but I never get the feel that it's a woman.

Leif:

I, uh, there's this big part of me that feels like it's gonna still be Chuck in

Leif:

the end, that like now just right here where we are, even though all the shit

Leif:

the Gossip Girl has put Chuck through, I still wouldn't be surprised for it to be

Leif:

Chuck in the end and just ignore all the times when it clearly couldn't have been.

Leif:

Uh, because I feel like that's going to have be.

Leif:

In the end of this show, the, the, in the end of this show, they're

Leif:

gonna have to ignore whoever it is.

Leif:

You're gonna have to ignore shit.

Leif:

Who is she talking to?

Leif:

Juliet?

Leif:

Is she talking to Gossip Girl?

Leif:

That was my other question.

Leif:

Well, that, so that was my one thought.

Leif:

Was she talking to Howard Campbell is,

Leif:

oh, Jesus.

Leif:

I hope she was not talking to Holland Campbell.

Leif:

I was actually kind of hoping we never saw that actor again, but I, I don't know.

Leif:

I'm sure she can stir up trouble somewhere.

Leif:

She could have been talking to, to Georgina too.

Leif:

Did you tell me Georgina's gone forever?

Leif:

Oh, I think you did, but then you recanted it.

Leif:

Yeah, yeah, I was just joking.

Leif:

Yeah, so it could have been Georgina and it could be tied into this whole

Leif:

Georgina shit, or, but she could have been talking to Gossip Girl.

Leif:

I just feel like they, they're so thirsty for me to believe that this is

Leif:

Gossip Girl, that I can't believe it.

Leif:

Mm. If that makes sense.

Leif:

Yeah,

Music:

no,

Music:

Steve (2): I do.

Music:

Uh, my other big prediction, we're gonna find out about the baby.

Music:

We're gonna realize the baby is not Dan's.

Music:

I am kind of predicting that either Rufuss and Lily raise

Music:

Milo anyway, or they have a baby.

Music:

I feel like there's been so much of baby stuff and Lily being so into

Music:

this baby that I could see them either having a baby or raising Milo.

Music:

I could see Milo then becoming like a part of the show.

Music:

Especially if it gives Rufuss and Lily something to do.

Music:

I think it would be very intrusive for it to be.

Music:

Dan's kid.

Music:

So I don't think that that has, I don't think that has much to stand on.

Leif:

Well, like I said, in Gossip Girls Universe, I think that was, the blood type

Leif:

was conclusive evidence that it's not Dan.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yes, I, I agree with that.

Leif:

I agree.

Leif:

And I also feel like there is this side of this that the morality of the Gossip

Leif:

Girl universe is that baby's not Dan.

Leif:

So you don't have to have anything to do with it.

Leif:

Kick the curb, just like, yeah, just drop it off at the nearest adoption agency.

Leif:

Just leave it, leave it in on a doorstep at the fire station, the

Leif:

Upper East Side, like despite the fact that you could make sure that this kid

Leif:

has the best fucking life possible.

Leif:

Well, any other predictions?

Leif:

I think that the love triangle between Dan, Nate, and Serena is

Leif:

still gonna kind of flutter around.

Leif:

I'm worried that Serena's just gonna go full ham and try to like.

Leif:

Interrupt those relationships.

Leif:

'cause she's gonna be mad that no one's paying attention to her.

Leif:

Sounds like a Serena move.

Leif:

Sounds like a Serena move.

Leif:

Or Serena and Chuck.

Leif:

I think that that could happen.

Leif:

I think that there's a little bit of room for that now.

Leif:

Yeah, it's disgusting, but I think there's a door.

Leif:

Oh.

Leif:

Now let's get into segments.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

This weekend fan, uh, we hopped in the way back machine to travel

Leif:

to the fan forums from 2010.

Peabody:

Hello there.

Peabody:

Peabody here.

Peabody:

And this is the way back machine for traveling through time.

Peabody:

And this is my boy chairman speak.

Peabody:

Chairman.

Music:

Hello.

Peabody:

Good boy.

Leif:

Overall, it was a good episode.

Leif:

They really liked it.

Leif:

Yeah, it it is solid.

Leif:

Ed and Layton were amazing in the train station.

Leif:

Yeah, dude.

Leif:

Steve (2): Leighton's acting.

Leif:

The, the shit that she can do with her face just blows me away.

Leif:

And there are looks that she gives throughout this.

Leif:

The, probably her best one is when Serena convinces her to go to the train station

Leif:

and has that look of like, why are you turning my world upside down like this?

Leif:

And amazing for me it was when she heard Chuck was shot.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

Oh my God.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

And where, where her whole, that's Chuck was shot.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Her whole demeanor just changes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Absolutely.

Leif:

Incredible work on her part.

Leif:

Uh, they love that Serena was so worried about Chuck.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

She's worried about her brother.

Leif:

I don't think that anything Serena did all of my trashing

Leif:

Serena and how she handled this.

Leif:

Once again is ne not out of character for Serena and very much Serena

Leif:

believes Chuck needs to be safe and that she has to be the one to

Leif:

help to convince Blair to save him.

Leif:

I don't think Chuck needed to be saved.

Leif:

I think everybody's better off if he goes to India.

Leif:

But I do believe that Serena was good in this with how she handled Chuck.

Leif:

They're desperate to find out who Juliet was talking to.

Leif:

Yeah, very interested

Leif:

Steve (2): who, who would be after Serena like that is is the big question.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Not mad at Nate.

Leif:

Just disappointed.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

So pretty, so dumb.

Leif:

Daddy Dad is adorable.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

Totes for some reason there was a lot of eight for Serena's blue pants.

Leif:

Interesting.

Leif:

They were kind of ugly.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

I mean they were kind of intrusive and very blue.

Leif:

But I'm also, yeah, it didn't bother me, but I get it.

Leif:

Especially if you're looking more

Leif:

and finally there's mixed feelings on Heather.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

She has not yet brought a lot to the table in terms of character.

Leif:

Here's another thing that I left out in the predictions and it's

Leif:

more of a question, why the fuck didn't she take him to a hospital?

Leif:

I don't.

Leif:

Now it could be they were off in the middle of the countryside and

Leif:

Prague where he washed up somewhere was dumped or whatever, but it seems

Leif:

like he was found on a city street and she took him home and nursed him.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

So she did not take him to a hospital, so why not?

Leif:

So there is something shady.

Leif:

Possibly they just want us to.

Leif:

Ignore that or is there something there?

Leif:

And I, that's something that I'm very curious about.

Leif:

We shall see.

Leif:

Yeah, because like they're saying, being on the fence about her,

Leif:

like I said, they haven't given us a lot about her character.

Leif:

Only that she wants to bang Chuck all the time.

Leif:

But that's a lot of women who wanna bang Chuck all the time and, and that he's,

Leif:

she's willing to follow him anywhere.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

But if she knows he's got the cash, then of course she's gonna

Leif:

be willing to follow him anywhere.

Leif:

So is she up to something or is she legit

Leif:

moving over to episode?

Leif:

Great.

Leif:

I like we've been saying great episode, a train station scene, one of my all

Leif:

time favorite scenes from the show.

Leif:

And yeah, just a lot of emotions.

Leif:

Soundtrack was great.

Leif:

Choreography was great.

Leif:

And I, you know, I, I liked the, the Dan and Nate stuff as well, like how

Leif:

they, you know, they were, you know, a little, little schemey there by Nate,

Leif:

but they, they wrote out the end.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

So I gave this episode a Yeah, I'm,

Leif:

Steve (2): I'm meeting you there.

Leif:

Pretty much all the same reasons.

Leif:

I, I feel like there, it wasn't flawed even last week where the New York stuff

Leif:

felt a little weaker than the Paris stuff.

Leif:

Even I felt even the New York stuff was stronger this week,

Leif:

that Nate and Dan's storyline.

Leif:

So yes.

Leif:

I'm gonna meet you there with an a.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

My head count is that Josh Saffron didn't have to help as much with,

Leif:

uh, Sarah Goodman as he had to do with with Stephanie's Avid.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

So he had more time to focus on the New York stuff.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Moving to Stockwatch going up, I had Dan, 'cause you know, he got a

Leif:

nap for the first time ever and he got, you know, food made for him.

Leif:

He got laid and you know, he didn't do anything wrong.

Leif:

He was, you know, just going with the flow.

Leif:

Absolutely.

Leif:

Uh, I had Juliette going up 'cause she or ski seems to be

Leif:

working perfectly, perfectly.

Leif:

I had Lily going up 'cause she was a good grandma.

Leif:

I had Chuck going up 'cause he is, you know, recognizing that he was a terrible

Leif:

person and he's trying to be better Blair going up 'cause she's moving on

Leif:

and you know, she had her little, you know, date with the prince and he seems

Leif:

to be, what's the, you know, he's, he seems like he's into it pretty much.

Leif:

But she's, you know, thinking about her, you know her stuff.

Leif:

She's still sticking with the college.

Leif:

I had Eva going up 'cause she.

Leif:

Going from being a peasant to being living on the Upper East side.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

But that is it for going up.

Leif:

Steve (2): I believe I had all of the same ones.

Leif:

Dan, like you said, for all of the stuff that he's done in this

Leif:

episode, I had uh, Lily going up.

Leif:

I have Chuck going, Chuck and Blair going up for their realizations

Leif:

and for where they've come to.

Leif:

I had Ava coming up for, you know, rags to riches.

Leif:

I had Juliet going up 'cause her scheme seems to be working.

Leif:

I have Vanessa going up.

Leif:

Did you have Vanessa going up?

Leif:

I have Vanessa going up because I think that she really was great with Dan and

Leif:

that she and Dan end up together in the end of this and seemed very happy.

Leif:

So I have her going up.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

I believe that is everyone I had going up.

Leif:

Going

Leif:

down.

Leif:

I had Serena because, well, I think it's pretty obvious.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

Um, I had Rufuss going down 'cause he's a, he was a pouty baby.

Leif:

Even, even though he is on the right.

Leif:

Right.

Leif:

I am still putting him down because he was just such a pouty little baby.

Leif:

Steve (2): I almost gave him an up 'cause he got there in the end, but

Leif:

then didn't really, and I, I, yeah,

Leif:

I had Vanessa going down 'cause I just can't see this work.

Leif:

Er, she's gonna get chewed up and spit out.

Leif:

Steve (2): I think that I can see that happening, but I feel like at the end of

Leif:

this episode, that's where she ends up.

Leif:

She did.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

She ended up where, kind of where she wants to be, but she was lied

Leif:

and manipulated into that spot.

Leif:

Yeah, that's true.

Leif:

And same thing with Nate.

Leif:

He, he kind of ended up where he wanted to be, but he was lied and manipulated.

Leif:

So he's going down as well.

Leif:

Yes.

Leif:

What do you got?

Leif:

Steve (2): So, I, I'll start with Nate because Nate, I did have going

Leif:

down because he got played this whole episode and is continuing to get

Leif:

played, whereas I felt like Vanessa was lied to, but she wasn't like, I don't

Leif:

feel like she was manipulated by Dan.

Leif:

So I, I'm, I'm gonna keep her where she is, where I had her, who

Leif:

was manipulated by, uh, Juliet.

Leif:

By Juliet.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

I have, I'm gonna keep Rufuss neutral 'cause I felt like he

Leif:

kind of got there in the end.

Leif:

So I'm not gonna give him the down, but Serena for just losing, losing it all

Leif:

and, and the hell I seen was so great.

Leif:

It's probably my favorite.

Leif:

Like Serena getting dumped on moment.

Leif:

No one even dumped on her.

Leif:

I think that that is it.

Leif:

Nate.

Leif:

Nate, Serena.

Leif:

And yeah.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

I think just those two I had going down.

Music:

But here's the best outfit outfits from the last episode.

Music:

We've seen.

Leif:

Best Outfit No surprise here.

Leif:

Yeah.

Leif:

It's Glares Red.

Leif:

Do Dore Oscar Dorena.

Leif:

Steve (2): Yeah.

Leif:

There, there, there is absolutely zero competition in this episode.

Leif:

It is.

Leif:

And, and it's funny 'cause you told me that, that one of her best dresses was

Leif:

in this episode before I left last week.

Leif:

Mm-hmm.

Leif:

And you know, I'm waiting for it.

Leif:

And Robin and I at the same time when she first has that

Leif:

reveal, it's just breathtaking.

Leif:

So yeah, there's absolutely no doubt that that, you know, sorry, sorry.

Leif:

Rags.

Leif:

Sorry.

Leif:

Rags.

Leif:

Chuck, this one goes to Blair

Leif:

Jimy Cricket.

Leif:

Jim Jimy Cricket.

Leif:

That is it for segments.

Leif:

You got anything you wanna plug this week?

Leif:

I do.

Leif:

So

Leif:

Steve (2): I am about to become a professional dungeon master, so if you

Leif:

are interested in d and d and learning how to play, I will be working through

Leif:

a site called Start Playing and go ahead and you'll be able to find me

Leif:

and join games that I am running.

Leif:

Uh, and if you're not interested in DD, tell people that are, because this seems

Leif:

like it should be a, a neat gig for me.

Leif:

So start playing.com.
