Leif:

That reminds me of a, Do you ever watch that show?

Leif:

Episodes?

Steve:

No, I've heard of it. That's, the Friends.

Steve:

Matt Blanc, right?

Leif:

Yeah. it's like a

Leif:

fictional version of himself.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, I never actually watched it.

Leif:

But at one point in the show,

Leif:

he was feeling a bit depressed, so he slept with his

Leif:

stalker, who was

Leif:

a young, beautiful woman.

Steve:

That's hilarious

Steve:

in a comedic universe. That's

Steve:

hilarious

Steve:

in the realm of television. It's sort of

Steve:

like when I watch a horror movie with, Robin. She's like,

Steve:

people don't deserve to die. I'm like, no, there are rules to horror

Steve:

movies, and that person deserves to die

Steve:

by the law of horror movies, not real

Steve:

life.

Leif:

Hey, Upper Eastsiders and all you scandal loving listeners out

Leif:

there, you just tuned into the non judging breakfast

Leif:

pod, where the coffee is strong, the

Leif:

waffles are fresh, and the gossip is hotter than

Leif:

ever. My name is Leif, and I'm your seasoned

Leif:

Gossip Girl veteran.

Steve:

And I'm Steve, your newbie, your greenhorn,

Steve:

your. I don't know, Leaf. It's season three. How new

Steve:

am I?

Leif:

if you don't mind, or even if you do, we have an

Leif:

episode to record here.

Steve:

Yeah, I mean, after all, I drove across state

Steve:

lines to get here, so

Steve:

let's go ahead and get into it. So here's

Steve:

the deal, folks. Leaf has been a fan of Gossip Girl since

Steve:

it first aired, and I'm diving in for the

Steve:

very first time. And together, we're your dynamic duo, bringing

Steve:

you all the drama, romance, and sometimes

Steve:

questionable fashion choices of this comic

Steve:

2007 series.

Leif:

That's right. Each week we'll be taking a deep dive into the

Leif:

show one episode at a time. We analyze the

Leif:

hidden parallels and obscure references. Plus, we'll also

Leif:

be touching on all the behind the scenes gossip and some

Leif:

stories from fandom.

Steve:

And since we're all about inclusivity here at the non, judging

Steve:

breakfast pod, there's always room for you at the non judging

Steve:

breakfast table. So go ahead and grab a

Steve:

mimosa, some coffee, or maybe some of, Nate and

Steve:

Chuck's special medicine. And let's get into

Steve:

this.

Leif:

Let's do it. We are here at season

Leif:

three.

Steve:

Season three. Yeah. I just

Steve:

realized this morning how close we are to 50 episodes.

Leif:

Yes, we are. We're getting, pretty close here.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah, just a few away, which is really

Steve:

a milestone for podcasts.

Leif:

So it's kind of a slow episode,

Leif:

but I think it set some stuff up.

Steve:

Yeah. And I know we said this in our Last episode. But once

Steve:

again, go birds. I was down at the parade.

Steve:

I just wanted to bring that up, that a, friend of ours

Steve:

lives right off of Broad street and got to sit there and watch the

Steve:

parade as it went by, and then saw the

Steve:

speeches censored on TV so we could hardly hear what

Steve:

they said.

Leif:

Yeah. The key was to find the YouTube live

Leif:

stream.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. And we were at a friend's house, and we didn't want

Steve:

to change the tv, but I've since been looking them

Steve:

up and finding a lot of them unedited,

Steve:

because the censorship was so bad on

Steve:

CBS that it would be right as

Steve:

they said something. Then you would lose, like, the rest of

Steve:

their speech. They would block it out for, like, 30

Steve:

seconds sometimes.

Leif:

That's because they can only dump so many times and, like,

Leif:

within a certain amount. Period. Yeah.

Steve:

and I'm like, I'm familiar with how it works. My big thing

Steve:

is how we just pay the fines, Howie.

Steve:

Just pay all the FCC fines. That won't go

Steve:

against salary cap. You know, we've

Steve:

got the money's there in the budget. Like,

Steve:

go ahead, just pay all their fines and let them stay.

Leif:

Yeah, I don't know if you want to get that

Leif:

kind of attention on you right now with the current administration.

Steve:

Yeah, that's true.

Leif:

And, like I said, if you found the YouTube link, you can watch it

Leif:

live, uncensored.

Steve:

Yeah. And I'll remember that for next time because that

Steve:

was. It was really annoying how

Steve:

much they dropped just to be safe.

Steve:

And then you had other networks that were, like,

Steve:

never on the ball. They'd be like, we're

Steve:

fucking, Jim. We're very sorry about what you just

Steve:

heard. And they'd cut out the wrong part.

Leif:

And then, I know the Fox one, they kept

Leif:

cutting in to apologize.

Steve:

Yeah, there was another. I think it

Steve:

was abc, also did that. There

Steve:

was, like, you know, you missed it. Just

Steve:

apologize once at the end.

Leif:

But we are here to talk about Gossip Girl.

Leif:

Season 3, Episode 1 Reversals

Leif:

of Fortune original air date

Leif:

was September 14, 2009.

Steve:

That's a late premiere for them, isn't it? Weren't the others

Steve:

closer to August?

Leif:

maybe. I'll have to go back and look. Let us

Leif:

know.

Steve:

I thought I remembered that

Steve:

little bit of a lore dump when we first started

Steve:

that. Because season two

Steve:

starts before they get back

Steve:

to New York. So

Steve:

I thought. I remember that. I could be completely off,

Steve:

too. So let us know. Folks.

Leif:

This is before college starts, which usually starts

Leif:

in August.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

the title is based off of the

Leif:

movie reversals of fortune as

Leif:

1990, starring Jeremy Irons and Glenn

Leif:

Close. Never seen it.

Steve:

Never saw it. I've heard the title. That's

Steve:

about it. But I think I've heard the title.

Leif:

As of short description on IMDb

Leif:

is wealthy Sonny Von

Leif:

Bulow, ty's brain dead husband

Leif:

Klaus guilty of attempted murder, but

Leif:

he says he's innocent and hires Alan

Leif:

Dershowitz for his appeal?

Steve:

Is it a true story?

Leif:

Possibly.

Steve:

I mean, isn't Alan Dershowitz a real attorney?

Leif:

I believe so.

Steve:

And like, who wasn't famous yet either,

Steve:

right? Like he got famous from the

Steve:

O.J. trial. Right? Sure, I

Steve:

think so. because I think he was on the OJ team.

Steve:

And that wasn't until 95.

Steve:

94. 95. Somewhere in there. Yeah,

Steve:

95. Because I was a freshman in college when he was on trial.

Leif:

This episode was written by new de facto

Leif:

showrunner Josh Safran.

Steve:

Yeah, decent job.

Leif:

and directed by Back again

Leif:

J. Miller Tobin. This is his fifth

Leif:

episode of the series. Previously did Poison

Leif:

Ivy, Blair, Bitch Project, Summer

Leif:

Kind of Wonderful, and the grandfather

Leif:

Funny.

Steve:

That's a roller coaster, you know, Poison

Steve:

Ivy, our favorite. And

Steve:

then I like the grandfather,

Steve:

the other two. Summer Kind of Wonderful is probably

Steve:

one of our lowest rated episodes.

Leif:

I think that was the Caesar

Leif:

premiere, so we liked that one better than the second

Leif:

one, which was never been marcused.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, it was never been Marcus that. It was probably our

Steve:

lowest rated so far. Although I did, I,

Steve:

I. There were. Yeah, this was a

Steve:

better premiere. I thought this was a better season

Steve:

premiere than the last one.

Leif:

Why don't you go ahead and read us the Vulture recap?

Steve:

All right, here we go. It's a heartbreaking

Steve:

thing. The end of summer. And yet fall

Steve:

comes almost as a relief. As the air

Steve:

turns crisper and invigorating, winds

Steve:

sweep across the land. We're happy to wave

Steve:

goodbye to our summer friends, the ones with

Steve:

whom we've engaged in superficial conversations for

Steve:

the past few months, and go back to our

Steve:

real friends, our city friends, to

Steve:

leave behind that slow minded pool

Steve:

gossip and partake once again

Steve:

in rapid reference rich conversation with

Steve:

smart people who know maybe

Steve:

who Anis Ninja and

Steve:

Truffon are. And with the new

Steve:

season, too, comes a fresh start.

Steve:

A chance to do something, to be something

Steve:

different. This is what we felt last night during

Steve:

the season premiere of Gossip Girl. The greatest show

Steve:

of our time. Last night's episode

Steve:

was all about new beginnings, about taking on

Steve:

new roles or shaking off old ones.

Steve:

The Humphrey family now conjoined to the Bass

Steve:

Van Der Woodsens were adjusting to their new

Steve:

social and economic positions with

Steve:

varying degrees of success.

Steve:

Meanwhile, Rufus and Lily's son

Steve:

Scott had been playing the part of

Steve:

Vanessa's innocent love interest,

Steve:

though clearly his sights are set on

Steve:

something bigger. Nate Archibald was trying

Steve:

to resist playing the role his family wanted

Steve:

him to, though he will likely be foiled

Steve:

in this endeavor, for he is an

Steve:

imbecile and his grandfather

Steve:

has a Ferrari. Blair and Chuck

Steve:

were finding that a little role playing was

Steve:

helping them come to terms with their new monogamous

Steve:

selves. And even Carter Basin, appeared to be

Steve:

in the process of transforming

Steve:

himself from a cocky, arrogant

Steve:

asshole into a sensitive, thoughtful young

Steve:

man. Serena, however, was, ah,

Steve:

basically the same

Steve:

facts.

Leif:

Facts.

Steve:

Oh, my God. Like that,

Steve:

that, that. once again, it's a perfect

Steve:

recap. And if nothing else, for that last line,

Steve:

like, all of these people are just trying to be their

Steve:

new self and Serena is just

Steve:

Serena.

Leif:

Yeah, Serena was super cringy in the season finale, and

Leif:

she's super cringy in the season premiere.

Steve:

She's so cringy. I have stuff to

Steve:

say, but we'll get to that. And on

Steve:

that note, I will say now, whenever I talk

Steve:

to somebody about being on

Steve:

the non judging breakfast pod, the

Steve:

first thing I'm asked is if I'm up on the

Steve:

drama of the Blake Lively

Steve:

and Justin Baldoni.

Steve:

Baldoni. Which I

Steve:

mostly get my intel from Leif

Steve:

and I. I've read some of

Steve:

it, but yeah, just. I just keep seeing

Steve:

Baldoni coming up with receipts.

Leif:

Yeah, I mean, trial should be

Leif:

interesting.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, I'm, I'm. I'll be

Steve:

following that along a lot closer. I

Steve:

hate following that stuff. Like, I hate

Steve:

celebrity bullshit like that.

Steve:

However, I feel like this is just part of the job of being on this

Steve:

podcast at that point, you know.

Leif:

Act one begins. Welcome

Leif:

back, Upper East Siders, after a

Leif:

long, hot summer. Way I see, it didn't take

Leif:

long for you to dirty up the clean slates I gave

Leif:

you. My inbox is overflowing,

Leif:

so let's get to the good stuff, shall we?

Leif:

Spotted Chuck Bass up to his old

Leif:

tricks. Poor B. I guess nothing

Leif:

good lasts forever.

Leif:

Hot time, summer in the city. Chuck

Leif:

is flirty with a Serena knockoff at a Manhattan

Leif:

bar.

Steve:

First of all, my first response is like, what the fuck,

Steve:

Chuck? Is this person a.

Steve:

Is she, is she a cameo? Is she

Steve:

a person?

Leif:

So, yes, she is at this time

Leif:

a cameo. playing herself. Model,

Leif:

Ashley Henshaw.

Steve:

Okay.

Leif:

But after this, she's made

Leif:

a decent, she's got a decent

Leif:

CV of acting. Now she's got like, maybe 10 or

Leif:

12 movies and about, you know, same TV show

Leif:

appearances.

Steve:

Okay, all right, so. But at this

Steve:

point, if I was. If I was a

Steve:

fashion person in

Steve:

2009, you might recognize

Steve:

2008, I might recognize her. Got it. Yeah, that makes sense.

Leif:

Jenny is sunbathing in the hapta at the

Leif:

Hamptons house, but Eric tells her the

Leif:

car is here. It looks like the summer is coming to an

Leif:

end. It is revealed they are hiding a secret

Leif:

for Serena. What.

Steve:

Ah. The fuck are they talking about? Like, it was.

Steve:

It was so weird. And when we get to

Steve:

the reveal, it's even dumber because it's all

Steve:

just. Oh, we're just covering for Serena being

Steve:

Serena. Like,

Steve:

what?

Leif:

Well, I mean, so that. That's considered

Leif:

bad. Serena, quote, unquote.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, I know. It's

Steve:

just. Yeah, I.

Steve:

And the way they were talking, it

Steve:

sounded like she was robbing banks

Steve:

or, you know, just. But

Steve:

I do get it. And, I actually, I want to

Steve:

talk about it more as it unfolds anyway.

Steve:

Yeah. Because I have. There's a lot that happens along

Steve:

that line.

Leif:

Yes. Dan is teasing Rufus

Leif:

about going back to the real world after living at Cece's

Leif:

house all summer. However, Rufus points out that

Leif:

the real world now includes living at Lily's

Leif:

penthouse.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Like he.

Leif:

Rufus.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

He was so uptight about it last season.

Steve:

Yeah. And just the outfit

Steve:

alone that he's wearing. Like, what the fuck are you wearing? What is that

Steve:

shirt you're wearing, Rufus? That just

Steve:

looks like I have so much money and, no one can

Steve:

comment on what I wear anymore. Like, that's what that

Steve:

shirt says to me.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

And Dan doesn't seem to be hating it

Steve:

either.

Leif:

No.

Steve:

Dan isn't as critical

Steve:

as maybe he once was. And

Steve:

that's really as far, like. Okay. I

Steve:

got so much to say about people.

Leif:

In this episode, Dan and

Leif:

Rufus find Jenny and Eric not ready to leave.

Leif:

Dan claims Serena is doing the Eat Pray

Leif:

Love thing, but something seems off.

Leif:

Dan is meeting up with Vanessa, who maybe didn't go to Europe

Leif:

with Nate after all.

Steve:

Yeah, that kind of came out of nowhere.

Steve:

That looked like they were going off together and then they're

Steve:

not.

Leif:

But they did, though.

Steve:

yeah, they went off together, but.

Leif:

They just came back early or something. I don't know.

Steve:

Or came back separately.

Leif:

Yeah. Speaking of Nate, he is

Leif:

making out with an unknown auburn beauty on a

Leif:

helicopter. The pair disembark and then

Leif:

recount their meet.

Steve:

Cute.

Leif:

When they part ways, they discover that not Only

Leif:

have they met before, but their families are bitter

Leif:

political rivals.

Steve:

Yeah, we got a little Romeo and Juliet thing coming

Steve:

on. My first reaction was, who is this

Steve:

older woman with Nate? Once

Steve:

again, Nate shows up in episode

Steve:

one with an older woman, not

Steve:

as a gentleman.

Leif:

She's a grad student, which.

Steve:

Yeah. And then we find out she is a grad student right away. She's

Steve:

older. Yeah. Yes, she's older, but she's

Steve:

not a stepmom.

Leif:

Did you recognize the actress at all?

Steve:

She seemed familiar. I didn't recognize who it

Steve:

was.

Leif:

So that's Joanna Garcia.

Leif:

and she was. When she was really young,

Leif:

she was in, like, 20 some episodes of are you

Leif:

afraid of the dark?

Steve:

You see, I never watched that. Was just too old for

Steve:

that.

Leif:

And then she was on Freaks and Geeks for four

Leif:

episodes. Oh, she was one of the

Leif:

cheerleaders. She, was Vicky's

Leif:

friend. The blonde one with

Leif:

pigtails.

Steve:

Yeah. All right.

Leif:

And so maiden name is Joanna

Leif:

Garcia, but she now goes by Joanna

Leif:

Garcia Swisher.

Steve:

Okay.

Leif:

Nick Swisher. She is, she's married to

Leif:

Nick Swisher, former Yankee.

Steve:

Oh, okay. Okay.

Steve:

I knew. I thought it sounded like sports. I don't know the

Steve:

Yankees that well, but, yeah,

Steve:

that. Now I write.

Leif:

He was on the team that beat the Phillies in the World Series.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, yeah,

Steve:

yeah. There's a reason I don't remember them.

Steve:

My God, that fucking World Series,

Steve:

man. Cliff Lee owned them in

Steve:

that first. Owned them. They had

Steve:

nothing. And it looked like it was just going to be a

Steve:

beautiful, dominant. Oh, Super Bowl. Super

Steve:

Bowl. Super bowl

Steve:

domination. Super Bowl.

Leif:

Chuck and Ashley Hinshaw are about to get hot

Leif:

and heavy in a quiet hallway when Blair interrupts

Leif:

and humiliates the blind. It turns out that this

Leif:

was all a kinky foreplay for

Leif:

Chuck and Blair.

Steve:

Yeah, I. I kind

Steve:

of dug that. That this was their kink

Steve:

and this is how they're keeping things fresh

Steve:

and. All right, kids, have fun.

Leif:

so we do find out that Blair picks her.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Did she deliberately pick her because she looks like

Leif:

Serena?

Steve:

I could see that she's a lot shorter than Serena,

Steve:

obviously, but.

Leif:

Yeah, I wonder how many of the lot like her.

Steve:

Yeah, I wonder how many of the.

Steve:

Of the game that they've

Steve:

been playing. How many of the participants in this game they've been

Steve:

playing look like Serena. How many of

Steve:

them are tall blondes? And how does that get

Steve:

Blair going, too? Yeah.

Leif:

Of course, the later one definitely is a tall blonde.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. Yep. Is she also

Steve:

a cameo I thought so.

Steve:

They. They often treat cameos

Steve:

like cameos. The way they speak to them. I really

Steve:

loved Blair's, like, non

Steve:

takedown takedown of her when she's like, get your

Steve:

American Girl doll hair and poreless skin

Steve:

out of here. Like, she's throwing compliments at

Steve:

this person. She's berating.

Leif:

You might have an Abercrombie campaign and the key to George

Leif:

Clooney's castle in Lake Cuomo.

Steve:

Yeah, I really enjoyed

Steve:

that.

Leif:

Back at the penthouse, Rufus is discussing

Leif:

sleeping arrangements with Jenny, Eric, and Dan.

Leif:

Dan catches Eric and Jenny trying to hide the

Leif:

gossip magazines featuring Serena's summer of

Leif:

fun. Dan, is surprisingly nonplussed at

Leif:

seeing them. At that moment, Serena's town

Leif:

car arrives and she is greeted by a sea of

Leif:

paparazzi. Dan calls Vanessa and

Leif:

blows her off. We see Vanessa is hanging out with

Leif:

Scott Rosen.

Steve:

A couple of things here. Dan being

Steve:

nonplussed about Serena

Steve:

really feels like a continuation of

Steve:

the last episode. That at the end of the

Steve:

season, he's like, are we still really going to be friends after

Steve:

this? Like, what's really

Steve:

happening? Like, And so when he sees all these things,

Steve:

to him, it's like, yeah, Serena's doing Serena shit.

Steve:

You know, it doesn't seem like

Steve:

he's thrown by it. He's just kind

Steve:

of like, yep, that. That tracks. And that's what I was

Steve:

getting away from. You know, I kind of got that.

Leif:

Attitude from him now before when he said that. That was

Leif:

before Lily Rufus proposed and the

Leif:

families intermingled. So they are still

Leif:

going to be connected. And

Leif:

it was more that, I think, because from the earlier scene,

Leif:

Dan was doing bad acting, like,

Leif:

purposeful bad acting,

Leif:

pretending like he didn't know what was going on.

Steve:

Right, right. That is true.

Leif:

Because he is also, as we find out, covering

Leif:

for Serena.

Steve:

Yeah. Because Jenny said the things about

Steve:

blocking him so that he couldn't see stuff.

Steve:

But he does indicate later, like, yeah, I also saw,

Steve:

like, this shit is everywhere.

Leif:

Or he just noticed that she blocked his

Leif:

filter.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Leif:

As for Serena Van der Woodsen, you left America

Leif:

as star, but after your exploits in Europe, you've

Leif:

come back a supernova, and yet nothing

Leif:

explodes without a fuse. I wonder what

Leif:

lit yours.

Steve:

The other thing about that scene, when Rufus

Steve:

goes out to save her from the paparazzi, and I did not

Steve:

catch it the first time, the second time

Steve:

I watched, she gives that look

Steve:

that you can see indicates

Steve:

that she's not mad they're

Steve:

there. that she gives a little like, okay,

Steve:

they're still watching me look.

Steve:

Relief. Almost relief that they're

Steve:

still watching her.

Leif:

We get into Act 2. The Humphrey van

Leif:

der Woodsen's minus Lily are having a brunch at the

Leif:

penthouse. Rufus announces that Lily bought them

Leif:

a table at the Vanderbilt charity polo

Leif:

match.

Steve:

And here's Rufus being a better parent to someone

Steve:

who's not his kid than he is to his own kid

Steve:

with Serena, which he does more so

Steve:

later. And again, it isn't his kid, but

Steve:

he does, yeah, yeah.

Leif:

And I do like Dan's, facial reaction to the polo

Leif:

match.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Not

Steve:

enthused.

Leif:

No.

Steve:

And Rufus is being like, well, we're going to this

Steve:

thing. Yay. And it's

Steve:

Rufus. You hate that shit too.

Leif:

Serena leaves to go buy a hat for the polo match

Leif:

and Dan walks her out. Dan tries to figure out

Leif:

what's going on with Serena and why she is lying to

Leif:

everyone. Serena brushes it off,

Leif:

not a big deal. And everything is fine.

Steve:

Dan, listen,

Steve:

no one's going to confide in you.

Steve:

You tell everyone

Steve:

everything. You are not a

Steve:

secret keeper. You're not

Steve:

the comfort person that you may think you are because you

Steve:

also immediately judge and then tell.

Steve:

So you're not really a good person to

Steve:

confide in.

Leif:

Chuck and Nate are doing a classic walk and talk and

Leif:

catching each other up and the audience on their respective

Leif:

summers. Chuck is content to let Lily

Leif:

continue to run the bass board so he can branch out on his

Leif:

own. Nate hasn't talked to his family since

Leif:

he skipped out on the summer internship

Leif:

that the grandfather lined up for him. Chuck

Leif:

advises Nate to take the new girl Bri to the

Leif:

polo match to get back his family.

Steve:

Yeah, because dating the enemy

Steve:

is sleeping with the enemy is hot.

Leif:

Yeah. He implies that he had an affair with Ivanka

Leif:

Trump.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. He says, why do you think I have the

Steve:

Ivanka thing? Yeah,

Steve:

I thought that whole thing was pretty funny.

Leif:

Serena and Blair are doing a similar walk and talk on a

Leif:

different Manhattan street. Serena is a bit leery

Leif:

about Blair's sex games with Chuck.

Steve:

This whole cut back and forth

Steve:

scene between Chuck and Nate

Steve:

and Serena and Blair. I really

Steve:

liked the best friends all being together again.

Steve:

You know, I liked seeing them

Steve:

talking and especially with

Steve:

all the tension that was there between Chuck and

Steve:

Nate before, how that's just kind of really

Steve:

blown over. And it was really nice to see them being the season

Steve:

one best friends again.

Leif:

Yeah, we switch back to Nate and

Leif:

Chuck and Nate seems to share Serena's vanilla outlook

Leif:

on the sex gains.

Steve:

And it was really, again Good

Steve:

best friend advice to best friends on both

Steve:

sides of it. Even though it seems like they're kind of

Steve:

shaking things up for them. It was really good best

Steve:

friend talk.

Leif:

We shift back to the girls we see. Serena

Leif:

is now telling Blair that the open relationships invite

Leif:

chaos. Serena acts like she is annoyed by

Leif:

the paparazzi, but Blair calls her out on

Leif:

her shit.

Steve:

Yeah. I love that Blair does that. I love

Steve:

that Serena's pretending like, oh, they

Steve:

just keep following me, and then flips her hair back and

Steve:

how come.

Leif:

You blew your got your hair blown out?

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, I love it. I love that Blair

Steve:

knows her so well.

Leif:

And they do mention she, had something going on

Leif:

with Cristiano, Ronaldo, the

Leif:

Portuguese soccer player.

Steve:

Okay. Yeah, I did.

Leif:

Would have been 24 at this time.

Steve:

So kind of young for Serena.

Leif:

Or actually. Or is this. Are we finding out that's, like,

Leif:

her target age. That's how all

Leif:

old all our boyfriends are.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah.

Leif:

Except they're all 24. Except for Dan.

Steve:

Except for Dan.

Leif:

Dan and Vanessa are having coffee. It turns out Vanessa

Leif:

has been spending a lot of time with Scott since she got back.

Leif:

Vanessa, gets very condescending towards Dan

Leif:

when it's revealed that he has been enjoying Lily's

Leif:

wealth. Dan lies about taking the subway,

Leif:

but is immediately caught getting into a limo.

Steve:

I first have to address Vanessa's hair.

Steve:

That. What. What was going on with

Steve:

her head. And it was fixed when she went

Steve:

outside to give Dan his

Steve:

glasses. It looked fine.

Steve:

And then. And Robin was like, well, she didn't get

Steve:

the glasses to him in time because she sat for a blowout somewhere

Steve:

in between. But then back when they're.

Steve:

When we see her later on, her hair

Steve:

was kind of that again, those, like.

Leif:

They're extensions.

Steve:

Yeah, they're extensions, but they're, like. Tried to look

Steve:

like dreads, but not complete

Steve:

dreads. And it just

Steve:

kind of looked like a mess. Yeah.

Leif:

So it's an unfortunate thing in the TV

Leif:

industry, not a lot of the

Leif:

stylists know how to do other types.

Steve:

Of air, which I was

Steve:

wondering if that would be a big part of it, because it

Steve:

looked like.

Leif:

Yeah. Women of color. I have serious issues

Leif:

in TV shows.

Steve:

Especially that scans and

Steve:

that makes a lot of sense. And.

Steve:

Yeah, I. I could see that being.

Steve:

Being a commonality. And very

Steve:

much because it is. Because it is just in the world,

Steve:

you know, that's just.

Leif:

Yeah, you have to know what you're doing. It's. It's different.

Steve:

Yeah, you have to know what you're doing.

Leif:

Rufus Gets a call from Vanya letting him know that the

Leif:

paparazzi are going through their trash. Eric

Leif:

and Jenny simultaneously give different explanations of

Leif:

why the paparazzi are so interested in

Leif:

Serena. Even Rufus is smart enough to realize they're

Leif:

hiding something.

Steve:

Yeah, and, like, every one of their answers is

Steve:

legit, too. So

Steve:

just. Just sell it better, you

Steve:

know? But of course, again,

Steve:

nobody. Everyone's a fucking narc

Steve:

when it comes to this shit.

Leif:

Chuck arrives to pick up Blair and to

Leif:

engage in some more games. It appears

Leif:

Serena got into Blair's head because he hesitates,

Leif:

but then reluctantly agrees to go along.

Steve:

And Chuck feels genuine here when

Steve:

he's like, if you don't want to, we don't have to.

Steve:

And so, yeah, I really liked the

Steve:

dynamic. I liked how Chuck responded to

Steve:

her.

Leif:

Yeah. Rufus is going through the gossip

Leif:

mags featuring Serena. Rufus notices that the

Leif:

same guy appears in several of the pictures. By the knowing

Leif:

facial expressions of the three teens, I think

Leif:

we can probably surmise that the guy is

Leif:

Carter.

Steve:

Yeah, I didn't completely get that it was going to be

Steve:

Carter at first, because I just wasn't thinking back

Steve:

like that. And then when he showed up in the very next

Steve:

scene, it was like, oh, obviously.

Leif:

And the different things. So she was,

Leif:

topless on Valentino's.

Steve:

Yacht, which is what you do when you're on

Steve:

Valentino's yacht and she's dancing.

Leif:

On tables in Barcelona, which is what.

Steve:

You do when you're in Barcelona.

Leif:

And then Prince Harry was doing

Leif:

body shots off her in Santa Fe.

Steve:

You do off of, when you're in Central

Steve:

Bay.

Leif:

So Harry was also 24 at the time of

Leif:

this.

Steve:

That's really funny.

Leif:

Yeah. Plot twist. She was going the other way. It was actually Carson

Leif:

wentz,

Leif:

who was 17 at the time.

Leif:

For those of you who don't know Carson Wets, look up a photo of him.

Leif:

He's an NFL player.

Steve:

Yeah. And looks very

Steve:

much like, Prince Harry.

Leif:

Speak of the devil, and the devil doth

Leif:

appear. Serena is once again being

Leif:

followed by the paparazzi when Carter shows up.

Leif:

Serena gives Carter the slip by while slipping off

Leif:

the straps of her dress and disappearing into the

Leif:

crowd of photographers.

Steve:

Oh, no. What's happened to my dress?

Steve:

Jesus Christ, Serena. You don't know how to get

Steve:

attention.

Leif:

And we end the act with a Gossip Girl

Leif:

narration.

Leif:

Spotted Serena Vanderwoodsen giving Carter

Leif:

Basin the slip. We've seen all the

Leif:

selects, but what happened to them when

Leif:

TMZ was mia? Something tells

Leif:

me the truth is out of focus.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Act three begins Nate is calling Chuck

Leif:

because he is upset that his family bought him a

Leif:

car in yet another attempt to control

Leif:

his life.

Steve:

Just another Nate wanting to throw his

Steve:

family's money back at them

Steve:

when they're just giving him nice things.

Leif:

Vanessa is talking to Scott about Dan lying to

Leif:

her. Aside from the fact that we know Scott is a creepy

Leif:

stalker, I really don't like how he is trying to

Leif:

invalidate Vanessa's feelings, even if she is being

Leif:

judgmental. Scott then convinces Vanessa to get

Leif:

them both invited to the polo match so she can

Leif:

confront Dan.

Steve:

So, first of all, V. Tone it down a bit. Tone it

Steve:

down a bit. We know you hate anybody

Steve:

who's richer than you are

Steve:

because, again, everyone. Which is

Steve:

everyone on the show.

Steve:

She is going to nyu. She does live

Steve:

in an apartment that her parents pay for in

Steve:

Brooklyn. She's not

Steve:

poor. She's just not. She's the

Steve:

most poor person on the.

Leif:

Show if we're going based on reality.

Leif:

But I, feel like these show writers just don't

Leif:

understand how money works. They think

Leif:

she's getting by on a barista's salary.

Steve:

Right? Fair.

Leif:

Part time. Yeah.

Steve:

There is some detached writing in here.

Steve:

Yes. She can't take private cars. She takes

Steve:

the subway.

Leif:

Outside a modeling agency, Chuck and Blair are

Leif:

screening applicants for their sex entrapment game.

Leif:

Blair is rejecting every one of the models for

Leif:

farcical reasons. Chuck actually steps up

Leif:

and sees Blair is feeling insecure about the game and

Leif:

tells her that he just wants her to be happy and they don't

Leif:

have to do the game if she doesn't want to. Good on Chuck.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Good job, Chuck. I really

Steve:

liked. I really liked Chuck this whole

Steve:

episode.

Leif:

Way to take care.

Steve:

Way to take care of Blair.

Leif:

Definitely a changed man.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Jenny and Eric go to the loft to pick up some

Leif:

things. They discuss that Lily is with Cece, who is

Leif:

once again under treatment. They feel sorry for

Leif:

Rufus, having been suddenly put in charge of two

Leif:

kids he didn't raise in a house that he doesn't

Leif:

own. They also hope that Rufus knowing about

Leif:

Serena's summer will lead to the reveal of why she

Leif:

did it.

Steve:

Of course, Eric, the pragmatic

Steve:

sage of the show,

Steve:

laying out this nice piece of

Steve:

exposition where we see

Steve:

Rufus being in charge and we see Rufus with the

Steve:

kids. We don't necessarily have

Steve:

all of the backstory here. So for Eric

Steve:

to really lay out, hey, take it easy on your

Steve:

dad, because these are the things that are happening. That

Steve:

was a really nice little piece of exposition to

Steve:

help build that

Steve:

layer of, relationship that they're now

Steve:

establishing in those two households.

Leif:

Serena rise back of the penthouse, and Rufus is

Leif:

waiting with. With gusts of magazines carefully laid out on

Leif:

the table, Rufus goes into judgmental dad

Leif:

boat with an assist from Dan.

Steve:

I will say I felt once again, Rufus was

Steve:

a better parent to

Steve:

Serena than he ever was to

Steve:

Jenny. And I say that because

Steve:

he does come in ready to be

Steve:

judgmental, but is instantly like,

Steve:

before I get mad, talk

Steve:

to me. Which is a privilege he

Steve:

never afforded Jenny,

Steve:

ever. And when Serena laid it out and was like, hey, I'm

Steve:

sorry I did these things, and I know what it looks like, and

Steve:

this is what's going on. I'm sorry. And Rufus

Steve:

is like, okay, let's put us. Put this behind us.

Steve:

Which, again, is something he. And now it's not his

Steve:

kid. He can't really do

Steve:

much, and I think he recognizes that.

Steve:

What happens when you punish Serena? She goes

Steve:

to Spain.

Leif:

She's got again.

Steve:

Yeah, she just leaves. So I think he

Steve:

handled it very well. And the only way you can

Steve:

really handle it with is, you're disciplining your step

Steve:

kid. But he's still a better parent to Serena than

Steve:

he ever was to Jenny.

Leif:

So Dan mentions that if you look close

Leif:

enough at some of the pictures, nothing is left to the

Leif:

imagination.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Being that Dan is a horny teenage boy, what was he doing

Leif:

all summer with those pictures?

Steve:

Oh, yeah. I mean, we

Steve:

didn't hear about Dan dating, did he? Did

Steve:

we?

Leif:

After Rufus leaves, Dan confronts Serena about

Leif:

Carter. Serena panics and tells Dan that Carter is

Leif:

stalking her. When Serena goes to her room, Dan

Leif:

immediately calls Blair for help.

Steve:

Yeah, Serena,

Steve:

this is a bad look. This is a bad look. Saying

Steve:

that somebody is stalking you. That is

Steve:

not stalking you. Yeah,

Steve:

accusing people of things that you

Steve:

know they're not doing. That good is

Steve:

really bad. Now, if they're doing the

Steve:

thing, by all means, use your voice.

Steve:

Speak up. Let people know that things

Steve:

aren't right. But if they're not doing

Steve:

the thing that you're accusing them of, it

Steve:

is highly ethically

Steve:

inappropriate to make

Steve:

accusations that could get somebody into a

Steve:

lot of trouble, legally and

Steve:

financially. Because you're upset

Steve:

or because you're trying to hide something of your

Steve:

own.

Leif:

Serena Scott is

Leif:

seen calling his mom while holding his birth

Leif:

certificate and telling her that he's

Leif:

finally ready to do what he came here to do.

Steve:

Yeah, he forced his way

Steve:

in with the person who forces her

Steve:

way into everything.

Leif:

They are perfect for each other.

Steve:

Like it's a pilot fish following a pilot

Steve:

fish.

Leif:

Vidette used to bag herself a Humphrey.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

Oh, Vanessa.

Leif:

the act closing Gossip Girl narration was

Leif:

inter dispersed with both this scene and the previous

Leif:

one with Dan leaving a message for Blair. And it

Leif:

goes this just in.

Leif:

An unlikely alliance is forming on the Upper east

Leif:

side. Too bad. It may be too late to do

Leif:

any good.

Steve:

Yeah. M. I also was very excited

Steve:

when Dan called Blair because I

Steve:

always love a Blair. Dan team up at this

Steve:

point. Yes.

Leif:

We get into Act 4. Let the

Leif:

festivities begin. The party of the week has

Leif:

arrived. Jenny is excited about having

Leif:

an engraved place card with her name on it.

Leif:

Rufus offers to bully a photographer, but

Leif:

Serena declines and says she has to go find

Leif:

Blair.

Steve:

Mrs. Jenny Humphrey.

Leif:

They made her married.

Steve:

Yeah. When did you get married? I don't know, but it's

Steve:

engraved.

Leif:

Yeah. And we get the callback to the white party from last season

Leif:

premiere.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah.

Leif:

Nate is also on site with his new gal pal,

Leif:

Bri. Nate surprises Bri by introducing

Leif:

her to the grandfather. Nate gets pulled away to talk

Leif:

to someone else before he can explain himself to

Leif:

Brie.

Steve:

Yeah, that was shitty. Nate,

Steve:

if you would have said ahead of time, hey, I want you to

Steve:

go on a date with me to this family event where my

Steve:

grandfather's gonna be. But you don't

Steve:

just put someone in that fucking

Steve:

awkward ass situation and then immediately ditch them.

Steve:

And then ditch them and then be like, oh, someone

Steve:

who has money wants to talk to me. Excuse me, lady.

Leif:

Chuck and Blair are, at a table dissing the food

Leif:

and drink. They spot a model,

Leif:

Alexandra Richards. And even Blair is impressed

Leif:

this time. Chuck is ogling the model,

Leif:

but Blair makes it clear that they are done with the

Leif:

game.

Steve:

Yeah, you can see that Blair

Steve:

both liked and disliked the game, that

Steve:

she liked it, but she's in her head about it from the

Steve:

talk with Serena. And

Steve:

Serena's not wrong. This kind of thing.

Steve:

I, could see Serena's point of it being a slippery slope

Steve:

and Blair liking it. Until she doesn't

Steve:

anymore, so.

Leif:

Or what time she shows up too late.

Steve:

Or the one time she shows up too late. Exactly.

Leif:

Scott and Vanessa are also, here.

Leif:

Yay. Creepy. Scott spots

Leif:

Dan across the room or, across from the party

Leif:

and suggests that Vanessa should talk to him.

Steve:

Fuck all the way off. Vanessa. Vanessa, you're not

Steve:

even supposed to be here.

Steve:

And she all throughout this, she pops

Steve:

into this thing where she's not supposed to be and then is like,

Steve:

why aren't you spending time with me? It's like, because I didn't

Steve:

think you'd fucking be here.

Leif:

Vanessa approaches Dan Things are still prickly

Leif:

between them. It seems like Vanessa is about to

Leif:

apologize, but is interrupted by Blair. Dan

Leif:

apologizes to V but goes off with Blair.

Steve:

Yeah. And Dan

Steve:

hasn't done. Dan lied about taking the

Steve:

subway. Dan isn't

Steve:

being shitty to Vanessa outside of

Steve:

that lie. And she's just being such an

Steve:

asshole.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

And when it's like, hey, I need to go do this

Steve:

thing because I didn't fucking know you'd be here.

Steve:

And I knew this was happening, I.

Steve:

Have to do the thing I was already.

Steve:

I have to do the scheme I set up with Blair.

Leif:

My new best friend.

Steve:

Yeah, my new best friend.

Leif:

Suck it, Vanessa.

Steve:

Fucking asshole.

Leif:

Scott introduces himself to Rufus as Scott

Leif:

Adler, a friend of Vanessa. When Rufus

Leif:

offers a handshake, Scott is dumbfounded.

Leif:

Scott pushes Rufus buttons by finally

Leif:

sputtering out that he is a big fan of Rufus

Leif:

music.

Steve:

Which, that was a great cover

Steve:

and a great way to talk to this person. Because of

Steve:

course he is. Because he's been stalking them. So of course

Steve:

he learned his dad's music.

Steve:

Yeah. I really liked that

Steve:

moment. And that they really carried that on. That

Steve:

it's. Oh, no, I'm just a big fan. I thought it was

Steve:

clever. I was not mad at

Steve:

Scott. well, Scott's a

Steve:

stalker and he's creepy. I liked

Steve:

that moment.

Leif:

Blair and Dan find Carter, and it looks like this

Leif:

dynamic duo got a restraining order against

Leif:

Carter, and from now on, Blair will be by

Leif:

Serena's side. Serena then shows up, and Carter

Leif:

denies the stalking, but won't reveal the truth to Dan and

Leif:

Blair. Serena then gets called off to throw out the first

Leif:

ball, and Dan and Blair are left alone. Blair

Leif:

sees Chuck talking with the model from earlier.

Steve:

Yeah, it's a decent scheme.

Steve:

It is tv. So they do just hand out restraining

Steve:

orders. Forward.

Leif:

You're rich.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah, exactly.

Leif:

And yet another cameo here. the

Leif:

polo player is, Nacho Figueraz,

Leif:

who, according to his Wikipedia, is the David

Leif:

Beckham of polo.

Steve:

Oh, that's awesome. Was he

Steve:

24 at the time?

Leif:

Possibly.

Steve:

I also like that Serena got caught in her

Steve:

shit. That when, they're

Steve:

all face to face and they're like, you're stalking her? And he's like, I'm

Steve:

stalking her.

Leif:

Really?

Steve:

Is that what's happening?

Leif:

Really? Really?

Leif:

Serena? Scott is telling

Leif:

Rufus about his collection of Lincolnhaw concert

Leif:

bootlegs. Rufus Lee Scott holding the

Leif:

drinks. The festivities are interrupted

Leif:

by first Serena and then Carter riding off the

Leif:

out of the party on horses for

Leif:

Scott.

Steve:

Yeah, but I did love the

Steve:

whole, like, oh, you know, I might have that

Steve:

recorded straight off the board if you want to have it.

Steve:

And I loved how Rufus just

Steve:

got so played by. By

Steve:

the music thing. Because of course he would.

Steve:

Because. Because, man, I would be like that

Steve:

if. So I. Of course he's doing that,

Steve:

you know? Yeah.

Leif:

Forget about a grand entrance.

Leif:

Everybody knows it's the exit, though,

Leif:

remember, Gossip Girl

Leif:

narrates as we go into Act 5.

Leif:

Nate finds Brie alone outside the event. It

Leif:

turns out she is trying to get back in with her family

Leif:

and doesn't want to be photographed in the enemy

Leif:

camp. Nate apologized and lets her know

Leif:

that he's always down for a secret romance.

Steve:

But you are going to have to pay me,

Steve:

but I do have a fee for secret

Steve:

romances. And, it's funny how she

Steve:

wants to be back with her family, and he's trying to cut himself

Steve:

off. So obviously,

Steve:

this is going to play into

Steve:

more of that family dynamic as they go

Steve:

through. I'm really interested. I

Steve:

don't know if she's going to be a cast member or

Steve:

if she's going to be an arc.

Steve:

they are going to be at the same school, so I could see

Steve:

her at least being a recurring character. So I'm kind

Steve:

of interesting to see how this arc plays out.

Leif:

Any thoughts on her little backstory that.

Steve:

She gave the

Steve:

cousin getting stood up?

Steve:

I really didn't pay much mind to

Steve:

it other than, wow, I wasn't there

Steve:

for my cousin, and now I want to go back and be there for

Steve:

her. Was there something else?

Leif:

No. I'll just say, remember that

Leif:

story?

Steve:

Okay. Okay.

Leif:

Carter tracks Serena down. It turns out the big

Leif:

secret that they

Leif:

tracked down big Daddy V, and he

Leif:

has no interest in seeing his little girl.

Leif:

Carter would have stayed with Serena all summer, but

Leif:

she ditched him when her father rejected her.

Leif:

The confession is exactly what Serena wanted to hear.

Leif:

So she pulls Carter in for the kiss.

Steve:

Yeah. So

Steve:

the part earlier where Carter

Steve:

said it got weird and

Steve:

Serena said it got weird there

Steve:

was indication. I forget Carter. Carter didn't

Steve:

say it got weird, but Carter made a reference

Steve:

that made it sound like something happened

Steve:

between them. And

Steve:

by the time we got to this reveal,

Steve:

I forgot about the dad stuff. In the beginning of the

Steve:

episode, I remembered, oh, yeah, she went to Europe to find her dad, but

Steve:

now she's doing all this other stuff. And so

Steve:

when Carter says to her about, like,

Steve:

he. You tried. He didn't

Steve:

want to see you. He

Steve:

didn't want that. It was really.

Steve:

It's, a pretty powerful thing. Right? Like, her

Steve:

dad doesn't want to see her. And here's

Steve:

this guy that's like, but I would have been there for you this whole

Steve:

time anyway.

Steve:

And then she kisses the guy she accuses of

Steve:

stalking her.

Leif:

That reminds me of a, Do you ever watch that

Leif:

show Episodes?

Steve:

No. I've heard of it. That's the Friends.

Steve:

Matt Blanc, right?

Leif:

Yeah, it's like a, It's like a

Leif:

fictional version of himself.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I never actually watched it, but

Steve:

at.

Leif:

One point in the show, he was feeling a bit

Leif:

depressed, so he slept with his stalker.

Leif:

It was a young, beautiful woman.

Steve:

That's hilarious.

Steve:

In a. In a comedic universe. Yes,

Steve:

hilarious. Like. Like in. In the. In.

Steve:

In the realm of television, you know, it's sort of like

Steve:

when I watch a horror movie and, with Robin, she's like,

Steve:

people don't deserve to die. I'm like, no, there are rules to horror

Steve:

movies, and that person deserves to die

Steve:

by the. By the law of horror movies,

Steve:

not real life.

Leif:

The grandfather approaches Nate and Brie. Nate

Leif:

declares that he is not taking the new internship and that he

Leif:

will find his own way back to the city. The grandfather

Leif:

tells him, nate, my boy, work where

Leif:

you want, fuck who you want.

Steve:

I'll always love you.

Leif:

Now take this car and get back.

Steve:

To the city safe.

Leif:

As soon as Nate and Veree walk away, the grandfather

Leif:

calls Trip and tells him they now have a

Leif:

way to take down the Buckleys.

Steve:

It's so funny how he is

Steve:

always so deviously

Steve:

supportive of Nate that he's

Steve:

always, of course, Nate, you can

Steve:

just take this car and there's absolutely no strings attached.

Steve:

You don't have to take the internship.

Leif:

Blair is back at the match and learns that Chuck left a few

Leif:

minutes ago, along with a woman fitting

Leif:

Alexander Richards description.

Steve:

Yes. Is he back playing the game

Steve:

again? And kind of.

Steve:

Kind of. I'd say kind of

Steve:

a little bit. I wouldn't think that the leaving at

Steve:

the same time was an

Steve:

accident for.

Leif:

Chuck, but,

Leif:

spotted Malaire Waldorf learning, just because you get

Leif:

out of the game doesn't mean someone isn't

Leif:

warming the bench to take your plates.

Leif:

And we go into the epilogue.

Leif:

The match is wrapping up, and Vanessa is going home. But

Leif:

first, she drops a big heaping pile of judgment on

Leif:

Dan.

Steve:

Yeah, you're mad at Dan

Steve:

because you're at a place where he didn't expect to

Steve:

see you and he doesn't have time for you. And

Steve:

he's wearing nice clothes that someone else bought for

Steve:

him for this occasion. When

Steve:

at any point has Dan not

Steve:

been Himself at ah, no

Steve:

point was Dan not doing Dan

Steve:

shit. He's been judging Serena.

Steve:

Like that's a Dan thing. He's been putting

Steve:

up with Vanessa's bullshit. That's a Dan

Steve:

thing. He's been very

Steve:

uncomfortable, surrounded by

Steve:

money. He doesn't like. He, he likes what

Steve:

he's getting. But there is that level of discomfort

Steve:

that you see, you know, and he's.

Leif:

Helping his family and he's helping his family

Leif:

transition, as he says.

Steve:

Yes. As he always does, because his

Steve:

family always has been his priority.

Steve:

Especially because his family is just his dad and sister.

Steve:

Like his mom's like fucking gone at

Steve:

this point.

Leif:

She's fucking all right.

Steve:

She's fucking all right.

Leif:

Oh. Hudson

Leif:

Carter noticeably. San Serena is

Leif:

gathering his clothes as two angry looking men are

Leif:

holding the horses.

Steve:

I love that she ditched him. I love that she

Steve:

ditched him again. Like again. Vulture

Steve:

report. Serena just being fucking Serena

Steve:

this whole episode.

Leif:

Did he like pass out for a minute or something?

Leif:

How'd she pull that off?

Steve:

I mean, I could see her immediately after, just be like,

Steve:

I'll be right back. And then vanishing, you

Steve:

know.

Leif:

Blair arrives home and starts looking for Alexandra

Leif:

Richards. It turns out Chuck just had a headache

Leif:

and Blair didn't get the text because she left her phone on the

Leif:

table. Blair admits the rush home from

Leif:

Connecticut was exciting, but Chuck suggests just staying

Leif:

in.

Steve:

Yeah, it was really cute. And once again,

Steve:

Chuck really, really driving

Steve:

home. The point. I want you to

Steve:

be happy.

Steve:

That is what I want. This is super sweet. I loved

Steve:

it.

Leif:

Vanessa and Scott are, back in the city. Vanessa

Leif:

apologizes for talking or taking Scott to the

Leif:

polo match. Scott tries to take an

Leif:

optimistic look on the situation. Vanessa

Leif:

goes in for the kiss. The two of them make out in the middle of

Leif:

the street. As the episoding heading montage

Leif:

begins, Gossip Girl narrates.

Leif:

Growing up means one thing. Independence.

Steve:

The maybe we're not friends

Steve:

thing you had an argument over.

Leif:

Traumatic much? Vanessa?

Steve:

Yeah. You guys just had an argument over shit that was

Steve:

entirely your fault. So if

Steve:

anyone gets to make that call at this point, it's

Steve:

Dan. Like, you are. You are

Steve:

the asshole. Go on

Steve:

Reddit, list out this whole story under the I am

Steve:

I the asshole line. Guess what they're

Steve:

gonna say. You're the asshole.

Leif:

Yes. And then we get Rufus. Jenny and

Leif:

Eric arrive back at the penthouse with a

Leif:

photographer and Gossip Girl

Leif:

continues. We all want it.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Nate and Brie are driving back to the city. They rudely

Leif:

stop in the middle of traffic to make out and Gossip Girl

Leif:

narrates sometimes we use other people to try to get

Leif:

it for ourselves.

Steve:

I was actually expecting a

Steve:

paparazzi click at the.

Leif:

At.

Steve:

Ah, the light of them kissing. Because

Steve:

grandfather, whatever grandfather's scheme is,

Steve:

obviously it has to do with Nate

Steve:

and Brie. I thought

Steve:

that it was going to start there, but no, they just made out

Steve:

at a green light. I'd be so

Steve:

pissed if I was sitting behind them.

Leif:

There are definitely people hawking.

Steve:

Yeah, I would have been laying on that

Steve:

horn.

Leif:

Rich people with their Ferrari.

Steve:

Fucking Ferrari. Get. Stop. making out in your Ferrari

Steve:

with your hot girlfriend, kid.

Steve:

Go drive it to whatever hotel you can

Steve:

find.

Leif:

Blair and Chuck have found a new way to play games with

Leif:

just the two of them. Gossip.

Leif:

Girl narrates. Sometimes we find it

Leif:

in each other. that was cute little role

Leif:

playing. Yeah, Chuck is role playing

Leif:

as a waiter. That's definitely a missed opportunity to let him do a

Leif:

British accent.

Steve:

You know, you're right.

Steve:

It's almost as if there's canon

Steve:

that Chuck can't do a British

Steve:

accent, even though he can barely speak in an

Steve:

American one.

Leif:

he really whispered his lie in that scene, too.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

Serena leaves a voicemail for presumably her father,

Leif:

begging his attention.

Steve:

Serena, let it

Steve:

go.

Leif:

He doesn't want you.

Steve:

Yeah, I know that's tough to hear, kid. And

Steve:

I'd recommend, instead of this

Steve:

therapy. Therapy, Serena.

Steve:

Like, it will do you so much

Steve:

good, but trust me, this is

Steve:

not going to be good.

Steve:

you have his attention.

Steve:

What do you think doing all of this does

Steve:

to his desire to give it to

Steve:

you?

Leif:

Dan is sitting alone in the loft, and Gossip Girl

Leif:

continues. Sometimes our independence

Leif:

comes at a cost of something else, and that cost

Leif:

can be high.

Steve:

Yeah. Rufus has gone full Lily,

Steve:

and instead of parenting at this point,

Steve:

it's just buying the photos to make sure no one

Steve:

gets the photos of Serena's stunt

Steve:

double on a horse.

Leif:

Which is the next little clip here.

Leif:

Rufus is using, Lily's emergency money to buy

Leif:

the photographs of Serena from the polo

Leif:

match. However, the man says there's one

Leif:

photographer that couldn't reach. They couldn't

Leif:

reach Rufus. He just got swindled. What's

Leif:

the point of buying these photos if there's more

Leif:

photos of the same event out there?

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, more photos of Serena's

Steve:

stunt double on that horse, because

Steve:

there's no way Blake Lively was riding that horse across

Steve:

that scene.

Leif:

And Gossip Girl continues, because

Leif:

more often than not, in order to gain our

Leif:

independence, we have to fight. And then

Leif:

Serena is the final scene.

Leif:

She's with the photographer and she's making sure

Leif:

the photos hit the net. And Gossip Girl

Leif:

says, never give up. Never

Leif:

surrender.

Steve:

Yeah, she makes sure that those will be anywhere in Europe

Steve:

and Asia where her dad

Steve:

can see them.

Leif:

And so, yeah, the fourth ending

Leif:

lines from Gospel Girl is growing up

Leif:

means one thing. Independence. We all

Leif:

want it. Sometimes. Sometimes we use other people to try to get it

Leif:

for ourselves. Sometimes we find it in

Leif:

each other. Sometimes our independence comes at the cost

Leif:

of something else. And that cost can be high

Leif:

because more often than not, in order to gain our

Leif:

independence, we have to fight.

Leif:

Never give up. Never surrender.

Leif:

Exo xo Gossip

Leif:

Girl. So that

Leif:

is our season premiere.

Steve:

Last thing I want to say to Serena is that this really is not the

Steve:

power play you think it is.

Steve:

You're.

Leif:

Yet he doesn't care.

Steve:

He doesn't care. And that, like, I feel for.

Steve:

Like, that sucks,

Steve:

but, like, he doesn't care.

Leif:

So predictions. Let's do. First do predictions.

Leif:

Like, what's coming up right away, what's coming in the next few

Leif:

episodes?

Steve:

Okay. Grandfather scheme is going to

Steve:

take place and unfold that is going to,

Steve:

you know, get in between Nate and

Steve:

Bri or bring them closer together. Like I said, I don't know if

Steve:

she's going to be a cast member or

Steve:

an in and out member. Another big

Steve:

prediction. I know I never

Steve:

intentionally look ahead. I never intentionally

Steve:

see stuff. The

Steve:

next episode in Max, the

Steve:

thumbnail shows a picture of

Steve:

Blair's face, and that face

Steve:

tells me that she just discovered who her new roommate is.

Steve:

So I believe that that's coming up in the next episode,

Steve:

that Blair is going to have a roommate in a

Steve:

dorm, which I'm surprised Blair is living

Steve:

in a dorm at a state school. another

Steve:

prediction is that, Serena is going to continue

Steve:

to make a fool out of herself for the attention of somebody who doesn't give

Steve:

a shit. But eventually it's probably going to

Steve:

work because that's how TV works. So

Steve:

I think that in the near future, we'll meet Mr.

Steve:

Van der Woodsen. I kind of

Steve:

hope Cece gets better because she's been

Steve:

better on the show. So I hope that

Steve:

there's not a CC funeral coming up. That would make me a

Steve:

little sad at this point. Also

Steve:

feel like Blair and Chuck have this rhythm

Steve:

now. It can only last for so long before something

Steve:

interrupts it. I give that

Steve:

maybe three episodes,

Steve:

but I don't think it's going to be too long before there's a

Steve:

shake up there.

Leif:

Okay, so that's the

Leif:

micro looking more at the macro

Leif:

side. We kind of

Leif:

noticed that the season premieres set

Leif:

up things that kind of close

Leif:

out at the end of the season or

Leif:

near the end of the season. What kind of big

Leif:

parallels do you think they kind of set up for

Leif:

beginning this time?

Steve:

M. first of all, the

Steve:

secret scandals are there.

Steve:

Again, the grandfather Nate thing kind of

Steve:

parallels the

Steve:

Catherine Nate thing in the sense of here's this

Steve:

secret relationship that other people

Steve:

are going to be able to exploit.

Leif:

But that was resolved pretty quick.

Steve:

That was. What kind of things were you're talking about, like, throughout.

Leif:

What do you think was set up in this episode that'll pay off

Leif:

at the end of the season?

Steve:

I think that we'll see some payoff with

Steve:

the Rufus

Steve:

Van Der Woodsen children, the

Steve:

relationship there, because however Lily

Steve:

decides that Rufus handled that, we're going to

Steve:

see. So I think that we're going to see their

Steve:

relationship really develop throughout this season

Steve:

with Rufus really being

Steve:

dad while Serena

Steve:

is looking for dad.

Steve:

So there's definitely this big dad

Steve:

thing going on here.

Steve:

So I'm wondering how that's going to play out.

Steve:

I, think that Blair again.

Steve:

Blair and Chuck coming in so happy at the

Steve:

beginning. I feel like that sets

Steve:

up for again just. There

Steve:

hasn't been a happy couple throughout a whole season yet,

Steve:

I guess is what I. What I'm thinking with them.

Steve:

I. Let me think.

Leif:

So do you think they're going to break up a couple episodes and get.

Leif:

Be happy again at the end?

Steve:

Yeah, I mean, honestly, yes. I think that I see

Steve:

them.

Steve:

I see them doing sort of the Dan Serena

Steve:

thing and getting back together

Steve:

and apart a couple times or at least

Steve:

almost breaking up. They're gonna have to have

Steve:

tension there. So I really

Steve:

see that. But I think that again, it'll tie up with

Steve:

them together in the end again. Kind of like

Steve:

how it started with them apart

Steve:

together. apart together now. Well, I guess

Steve:

together apart would make more sense.

Steve:

So they could end up breaking up in the

Steve:

end because the other ones, they look like they were getting together

Steve:

in the end and then didn't. There's a lot of ways this can go.

Leif:

Any. Any other predictors.

Steve:

I also predict we're going to

Steve:

see some kind of

Steve:

triangle between Dan, Serena

Steve:

and Carter play out. Carter

Steve:

really is sort of an in and out character, and I

Steve:

feel like this episode didn't

Steve:

resolve his current

Steve:

stay on the show. So

Steve:

I feel like that's going to play out a little more until he gets

Steve:

fired at some point, because I'm pretty sure this

Steve:

is the season where he gets fired. I Don't remember for sure

Steve:

though.

Leif:

All. Ah, right, let's go ahead and get into some segments

Leif:

this week in fandom. we hopped into the Wayback

Leif:

Machine to travel to the Television without pity

Leif:

forums of 2009.

Leif:

Hello there, Peabody. Here. And this is

Leif:

the Wayback Machine for traveling through time.

Steve:

And this is my boy, Sherman. Speak,

Steve:

Sherman.

Steve:

Hello.

Leif:

Good boy. There's a

Leif:

mixed opinions on the episode.

Steve:

Overall that I,

Steve:

I can gather. I, I have mixed opinions on the

Steve:

episode.

Leif:

Some people liked it, some didn't. Yeah,

Leif:

Dan might become a fan favorite. He keeps

Leif:

smacking down Vanessa.

Steve:

That also is very

Steve:

fair. She needed to be smacked down

Steve:

a.

Leif:

Lot of hair watching this episode.

Steve:

yes. In fact, when I brought up

Steve:

Vanessa's hair, I also meant to bring up the fact that, like, a lot of

Steve:

the other hair looked great. The

Steve:

Chuck and Nate both had, Dan, Chuck and Nate

Steve:

all had new hairstyles

Steve:

and I thought they all looked good.

Leif:

So the forums.

Leif:

Vanessa's extensions were horrible.

Steve:

They were horrible.

Leif:

They were not a fan of Jenny's hair either.

Steve:

No, no. Jenny's hair also looks like a rat's

Steve:

nest.

Leif:

And there was mixed reactions to both Nate and Dan's

Leif:

new hair.

Steve:

Yeah, I like both of their hair.

Leif:

They are very intrigued by Serena and

Leif:

Carter.

Steve:

They're an intriguing couple. They're kind of a power

Steve:

couple in a way. So

Steve:

I'm not mad at them hooking up.

Leif:

So they kept calling Scott pilot

Leif:

inspector, Inspector with a K, not a

Leif:

C, because KS are cooler.

Leif:

but I don't get the reference.

Steve:

Me neither.

Leif:

If anyone gets it, please let us know.

Leif:

Blair and Chuck were sweet, but something

Leif:

seemed a bit off.

Steve:

Yeah, I mean, they need more excitement in their

Steve:

relationship instead of getting it from

Steve:

within. That's a

Steve:

red flag, I think.

Leif:

Desperate for an Eric storyline.

Steve:

Yeah. Stop just putting him in.

Steve:

Stop just making him filler.

Leif:

One fan commented that the actor turned out an offer

Leif:

to become a regular cast member.

Steve:

Oh, interesting.

Leif:

He wanted the flexibility to get other jobs.

Steve:

It's a shame because I would have liked him to

Steve:

have a bigger presence on Gossip Girl.

Leif:

And just like you, I've

Leif:

noticed a growing number of people are starting to

Leif:

enjoy and look forward to the Dan and Blair team

Leif:

ups.

Steve:

Yeah. Yep.

Steve:

They're. First of all, I love when they do

Steve:

it.

Leif:

They're going to be at college together.

Steve:

Yes, they are. And it's only a matter.

Steve:

Like it's only a matter of time.

Steve:

I've always.

Steve:

Yeah, they're going to bang.

Leif:

It should be interesting quartet at NYU with,

Leif:

Dan, Georgina, Vanessa and Blair.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah.

Steve:

Wow.

Leif:

Dan's going to be like John, Ritter and Three's

Leif:

Company.

Leif:

But that is it for this week in fandom. Let's go.

Leif:

Head over to episode grades.

Leif:

What do you got, Steve?

Steve:

first, I want to say I don't think I could see Penn Badgley taking

Steve:

a pratfall like. Like John Ritter,

Steve:

but other than that, I have

Steve:

a B. A solid B for this episode.

Steve:

There were a few minor

Steve:

writing points that I thought this could have been

Steve:

hunched up. I

Steve:

overall liked the episode. It

Steve:

wasn't in one of my top tier episodes.

Steve:

Those top tier episodes really have to

Steve:

have a big scheme

Steve:

kind of unfold or a

Steve:

big plot reveal or a big

Steve:

twist. And this had the Serena's dad

Steve:

thing, but it wasn't quite

Steve:

the big

Steve:

episode that I want for an A. But it's a

Steve:

solid B.

Leif:

Well, we are in the hand holding club because I also have

Leif:

a B. Like you said, it was a bit

Leif:

slow, but it had a lot of setup. I

Leif:

think it set up a lot of things right.

Steve:

It was a good season premiere, and

Steve:

it set up a season. I felt it actually

Steve:

set up a season better than the last

Steve:

season premiere. Did the last season premiere set up

Steve:

arcs, but it didn't set up the

Steve:

season. Whereas this has. It once

Steve:

again, takes them out of the city for most of.

Steve:

Puts them in Connecticut for part of it.

Steve:

So. Yeah, I really like that.

Leif:

Let's head on over to Stockwatch Video. You got going

Leif:

up.

Steve:

I have Nate.

Steve:

I have Nate going up because he

Steve:

doesn't know that he's getting played yet, and he got a girl

Steve:

and he thinks everything's going his way right now. I

Steve:

had, I had

Steve:

Chuck and Blair both going up as

Steve:

well. They.

Steve:

They're. They seem like they're in a good place right

Steve:

now. So I had them going up because

Steve:

they're working things out as a couple.

Steve:

I had Carter going up because,

Steve:

I mean, Carter got Serena for a

Steve:

bit. I had Jenny going up

Steve:

because she had her nameplate engraved.

Steve:

I had Scott going up because his

Steve:

scheme worked out for him. I had

Steve:

Rufus going up because he's going through a tough. Like, he

Steve:

does have a tough situation, and I think he's handling

Steve:

it better than I would have

Steve:

expected anyone else. That is all for

Steve:

going up.

Leif:

All. Ah, right. For me, I have Dan going up

Leif:

because he's got that nice suit. He's got a

Leif:

wallet full of $100 bills, and he

Leif:

Smackdown. Vanessa.

Steve:

I was just going to say I actually left him neutral

Steve:

because I liked those things.

Steve:

I didn't think he really went anywhere

Steve:

himself in the episode. But I do see what you're saying.

Leif:

He's also got a great tan for once. He's not looking

Leif:

all pasty.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah.

Leif:

I also had Jetty and Eric go up because they had the

Leif:

cute best friends, brother, sister thing going

Leif:

on. I had Blair and Chuck going up because

Leif:

they were cute and healthy for

Leif:

once.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

I had the grandfather going up. Cause he sort of

Leif:

got Nate wrapped around his finger.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And I also had Scott go it up cause he was, Yeah, like you

Leif:

said, his scheme seems to be working.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

who do you got going down?

Steve:

So going down. I have Serena is my first one going

Steve:

down because. Oh, honey. Oh, honey.

Steve:

I have Vanessa going down because she's an

Steve:

asshole. I actually had grandfather

Steve:

going down, but it's because

Steve:

he's creepy, devious,

Steve:

and because he's. He

Steve:

doesn't quite have the control over Nate that

Steve:

I think he wants to have yet.

Steve:

I think grandfather stock is about to go up,

Steve:

But I have him going down for this episode.

Steve:

And finally, I had Brie getting played

Steve:

by the. Getting played by the

Steve:

Vanderbilts. I had her start going

Steve:

down. I left Eric neutral because I

Steve:

felt like he was a, really great

Steve:

exposition piece in this episode, But I didn't really see

Steve:

him projecting one way or another.

Steve:

Whereas I saw Jenny actually, like, moving up.

Leif:

I just. I mainly gave it to him because he seemed happy.

Steve:

Yeah. Which is always good. Halfway through the episode,

Steve:

Robin said, has anyone checked in with Eric lately?

Steve:

Which I was like, we talk about that a lot on the

Steve:

podcast.

Leif:

For me, going down Serena,

Leif:

because, yeah, obviously

Leif:

I got Daddy Vanderwinsen going down

Leif:

because he's really horrible parent.

Steve:

Oh, yeah. I would like to add

Steve:

Papa Vander Woodson to my list too. I didn't

Steve:

really think about him, but, yeah, he's an

Steve:

asshole.

Steve:

I can't imagine, honestly,

Steve:

Rufus, because he's just

Steve:

oblivious. That's fair.

Leif:

Total hypocrite reversion last

Leif:

season.

Steve:

Oh, yeah. I think.

Leif:

I think the title is really, like, about him. The reversals of

Leif:

fortune.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah, I think you're right. I think you're

Steve:

right.

Leif:

Vanessa, because she was horrible.

Leif:

And I also had Ashley Henshaw going

Leif:

down because she got played.

Steve:

She got played.

Leif:

I had Cece going down, because she might be dying.

Steve:

Oh, yeah.

Leif:

Sorry, Cece.

Steve:

Sorry, Cece. But here's the best

Steve:

outfits from the last episode

Steve:

we've seen.

Leif:

Who m Do you have for best outfit?

Steve:

I had Serena's dress at

Steve:

the polo.

Leif:

The orange one.

Steve:

The orange one. I Don't typically like orange very

Steve:

much, but I thought that she really carried it. It's

Steve:

also probably the dress that showed the least amount of

Steve:

boob on Serena, and I kind of

Steve:

appreciated that it wasn't

Steve:

so much. So much boob on a dress of

Steve:

hers, so I gave it to that

Steve:

one.

Leif:

I went with Chuck's lavender pinstripe, suit

Leif:

at the polo match.

Steve:

I have a shout out to that, too. Chuck. Chuck.

Steve:

This whole episode had outfit

Steve:

after outfit that was just slick. I really like

Steve:

Chuck's outfits in this. Dan,

Steve:

too. Dan's suit at the polo match was also,

Steve:

I, liked that the no tie. It was very

Steve:

similar to the grandfather's suit that he wore to the season

Steve:

premiere last year, too. The

Steve:

tan with no collar. The

Steve:

one Cece's husband's, suit.

Leif:

Yeah. Well, that is it

Leif:

for segments. you plug in anything this week.

Steve:

I am going to be

Steve:

at Dawson street pub on March
