>> Steve: And I remember watching this moment and

Speaker:

being like, holy shit. Is this my first glimpse

Speaker:

at Lincoln Hawk? Because he's holding the

Speaker:

album, and I.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Believe they, uh, intended it to be.

Speaker:

>> Steve: That it felt that way. Yeah, it felt.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, this song is

Speaker:

not on Spotify or apple.

Speaker:

Hey, upper east siders, and all you scandal loving listeners out

Speaker:

there, you've just tuned into the non judging breakfast

Speaker:

pod, where the coffee is strong, the

Speaker:

waffles are fresh, and the gossip is hotter than

Speaker:

ever. My name is Leif, and I'm your seasoned gossip

Speaker:

girl veteran.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And I'm Steve the newbie. The

Speaker:

greenhorn. I don't know. What do you call

Speaker:

the new kid on the block in Gossip girl terms,

Speaker:

Leif?

Speaker:

>> Leif: I think they would label you as a

Speaker:

project. Uh, yeah. The girls have the potential to be a blair.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Well, then dress me in an Eleanor Waldorf

Speaker:

original, and let's get started.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Sounds good.

Speaker:

>> Steve: So here's the deal, folks. Leif has been watching

Speaker:

Gossip girl since it came out. I'm just

Speaker:

watching for the very first time, and together, we're your

Speaker:

dynamic duo, dissecting the drama,

Speaker:

the glamour, and the sometimes

Speaker:

questionable fashion choices of this iconic

Speaker:

2007 series.

Speaker:

>> Leif: That's right. Each week, we're going to break down all the

Speaker:

schemes, secret hookups, and couture

Speaker:

catastrophes, and trust me, there are a few of them.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And, um, since we are all about inclusivity here at the non

Speaker:

judging breakfast pod, there is always room

Speaker:

for you at the non judging breakfast table, whether

Speaker:

you are a old veteran like Leif

Speaker:

or a newbie like me. Go grab your

Speaker:

mimosa or a

Speaker:

cup of coffee or maybe some of nate and Chuck

Speaker:

special medicine if it's that kind of morning. And let's get

Speaker:

into it.

Speaker:

>> Leif: All right. This week, we're going to be breaking down season one,

Speaker:

episode five, daredevil. Did, uh,

Speaker:

you catch the reference?

Speaker:

>> Steve: I'm assuming Daredevil,

Speaker:

uh, the comic book character, probably. A little more

Speaker:

specifically. The movie would have come out

Speaker:

shortly beforehand.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Ben Affleck.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, the Ben Affleck version.

Speaker:

Who?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, we won't talk about that. Uh,

Speaker:

the IMD episode description for

Speaker:

reads. Dan makes elaborate plans to impress

Speaker:

Serena on their first date. Jenny is invited to

Speaker:

the infamous Blair Waldorf sleepover and finds herself

Speaker:

in a high stakes game of truth or dare. Lily

Speaker:

discovers Eric missing from the treatment center and seeks

Speaker:

help from her ex boyfriend Rufus.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, a lot, uh, a lot definitely takes place in this

Speaker:

episode.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yes, it was, uh, directed by

Speaker:

Jamie Babbitt. Um, done a lot of tv.

Speaker:

Russian doll, Gilmore girls, Malcolm in the

Speaker:

middle, United States, Atara

Speaker:

Niptuck, Silicon Valley, the

Speaker:

Oroville. Lots of stuff.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, and the orville. I mean, that's also. That's really recent.

Speaker:

The league of their own, if that's the series. Yeah, it was

Speaker:

just, you know, that was so.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, she's. She's steadily working.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, and then it was written by a. Lan

Speaker:

K. Rosenfeld, who, uh, did 22 episodes

Speaker:

of Gossip Girl.

Speaker:

>> Steve: It's a good run.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Anyways, we'll go ahead and get right into the

Speaker:

episode. Act one begins.

Speaker:

Preparation begins in the Waldorf penthouse for the

Speaker:

annual sleepover.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Um, the first thing that I noticed about this is that

Speaker:

you have Blair, who,

Speaker:

um, we've discussed her

Speaker:

relationship with food before

Speaker:

and how she's often body shamed by

Speaker:

her mom, doesn't eat a lot when we see

Speaker:

her around food, yet she surrounds

Speaker:

herself at these parties with just

Speaker:

decadence and. And

Speaker:

cakes and foods that she's never

Speaker:

gonna. Never gonna touch.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Mm hmm. Um, yep.

Speaker:

Uh, yes. Ah, yes, she is. Uh, definitely.

Speaker:

Yeah. Ah, she's bringing out all the food and

Speaker:

looks like a pretty fun party. Dan

Speaker:

and Rufus, uh, discuss his date with Serena in

Speaker:

Rufus's art gallery. Dan questions why Rufus

Speaker:

hasn't told Allison about the sale of her

Speaker:

painting.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Ah, a lot of the father son sort of stuff,

Speaker:

but also, you know, the. You're

Speaker:

seeing the communication issues with Dan and. Or

Speaker:

with Rufus and his wife.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. Um, he wants to

Speaker:

go. Go and visit her.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, and tell him. Yeah, he wants to tell her.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Dan suggests that, uh, this might be better with a phone call.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, and

Speaker:

good advice. Really good advice.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. It would have been much worse if you actually should.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I think some fists would have been thrown.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. Uh, if a fist

Speaker:

could travel through a phone. But we'll get

Speaker:

there.

Speaker:

>> Leif: In the hall at coston, Serena hits up, uh, jenny for

Speaker:

information on the mysterious date, but Jenny plays

Speaker:

coyote. Serena receives a phone call from

Speaker:

eric, who is coming home from the hospital.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Um, I love the line

Speaker:

of, um, humphrey

Speaker:

men. Casual Friday is every

Speaker:

day. Um, while

Speaker:

she has no idea about what is going on with

Speaker:

this date, she's preparing Serena

Speaker:

for her idea of what a

Speaker:

typical humphrey date would be,

Speaker:

which.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yes.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And blair invites Serena to her

Speaker:

sleepover, but Serena has plans with dan.

Speaker:

Jenny gets the invite instead. What? Is Blair

Speaker:

scheming?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Um. Um, she is

Speaker:

totally. She's totally up to something. Um.

Speaker:

Um, I also love the

Speaker:

who me who her with the

Speaker:

catty and is in the background.

Speaker:

Cottie. Yeah, cottie. And is in the background.

Speaker:

Um, you know, they. I

Speaker:

love when they have their little moments, I always

Speaker:

appreciate them, and that was a neat little one.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, lily and eric are back

Speaker:

at the hospital, and lily is forcing eric to stay in the

Speaker:

hospital despite the doctors saying it would be okay to come

Speaker:

home.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Lily can't face this. Lily still

Speaker:

can't face.

Speaker:

Eric has these issues. Eric,

Speaker:

she doesn't know how to explain it properly.

Speaker:

Um, and she doesn't know how to

Speaker:

parent eric.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Well, also, I think, as we find out later,

Speaker:

she blames herself

Speaker:

because he's been lonely. Cause

Speaker:

she's not been around, and Serena's been at boarding school.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, well, yeah, and.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And she's always off with the next guy and

Speaker:

traping around the world.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Drape scene.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Dan arrives to pick up Serena, has

Speaker:

and has to ad lib and change into something a little more

Speaker:

formal when she sees dan in a suit. While serena

Speaker:

is changing, lily arrives. Dan makes a joke that liz

Speaker:

is, elicits half a smile from lily. The

Speaker:

preceding jokes don't land as well.

Speaker:

Um.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Um, yeah, and

Speaker:

for one, um. Um, we

Speaker:

have Serena changing in front of dan

Speaker:

sort of. Again, not not necessarily in front

Speaker:

of, but, like, talking. Talking.

Speaker:

Yeah. Uh, very confident

Speaker:

about. Yeah, about her body

Speaker:

and not. And not feeling that. That

Speaker:

type of that shame, you know?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, ah, whereas you can

Speaker:

never imagine Blair doing this in front of Nate.

Speaker:

>> Steve: No, no.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Blair, even though they've been dating for years.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, exactly. And

Speaker:

struggle to find, you know,

Speaker:

the right moment for their own. For their

Speaker:

own sex, you know?

Speaker:

Um, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: If you're. If you're 17 and you've been dating that long and it's not

Speaker:

happened, there's a reason.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, there's other reasons. There's other reasons.

Speaker:

Um, but also that that interaction with Dan and

Speaker:

Lily where you once again, see that

Speaker:

awkward side of Dan where he's,

Speaker:

you know, where he tries to be funny and

Speaker:

he's. He tends to be more confident with

Speaker:

Lilly and tends to be more confident around

Speaker:

people that he doesn't

Speaker:

like, that don't like him, and he's kind of written

Speaker:

off. And since Lily has always had this

Speaker:

adversarial relationship with Dan, Dan

Speaker:

doesn't mind going at Lily.

Speaker:

Um, but then he also kind of has that moment where

Speaker:

he's like, I am taking this person's daughter on a

Speaker:

date, and then he kind of tones it back

Speaker:

and apologizes and gets a little awkward.

Speaker:

Um, but, yeah,

Speaker:

but she also doesn't seem to hate him as

Speaker:

much.

Speaker:

>> Leif: She's warming up a little bit.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, a little bit.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And Dan and Serena step out onto the

Speaker:

sidewalk. Serena sees a vespa and assumes it

Speaker:

stands. You know what they say when you

Speaker:

assume.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, she is. So she climbs on it.

Speaker:

She is so excited to have such

Speaker:

a Brooklyn date. We're gonna do something like

Speaker:

ride around on a Vespa. Dope. Oh,

Speaker:

man, I'm so glad because, you know, I'm used to just, like, getting into

Speaker:

someone's car and going to a fancy restaurant.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Ah. Uh, Jenny

Speaker:

nervously arrives at the sleepover.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Um, Taylor

Speaker:

Mumpson's acting in that moment is

Speaker:

just absolutely

Speaker:

impeccable. I

Speaker:

totally took me to my own daughter. When

Speaker:

you get my daughter in that moment when she's embarrassed

Speaker:

and she's caught off guard,

Speaker:

that look on her face

Speaker:

and also the way that she gets there and has

Speaker:

that recognition, realizes she's out of her

Speaker:

league and has to step it up and just

Speaker:

kind of meets that, like.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: So, uh, good.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Everything. Everything in her face in

Speaker:

that scene is just

Speaker:

perfect.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, definitely.

Speaker:

And that is the act break. As we moved into act

Speaker:

two, we are at a french

Speaker:

restaurant. Dan is bobbing.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Ah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: He is tanking this entire

Speaker:

date. He's. He, you know, he's looking

Speaker:

at the menu and. Oh, yeah, I'm not going to order the

Speaker:

thing I actually want because the appetizer is

Speaker:

the thing I can afford. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, yeah. Uh, as the waiter walks away, he changed. He's like, I'll just have the

Speaker:

appetizers.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cuz. Cuz sereno. Yeah.

Speaker:

Serena walked away, and he's like, hey, how much

Speaker:

was that? Yeah. All right, I'll just get. Yeah, I'll

Speaker:

get the appetizer. And.

Speaker:

Yeah, it was. He just.

Speaker:

It's, you know, I've been. I've been

Speaker:

on that date. I have been that guy on that. No,

Speaker:

no, I wanted the salad. I have

Speaker:

never wanted the salad.

Speaker:

>> Leif: At the sleepover. The other Humphrey is killing

Speaker:

it. But can lil j keep up with this high stakes

Speaker:

game? The drinks are coming out.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, and. And I don't like

Speaker:

vodka.

Speaker:

>> Leif: It's, uh, gin, honey.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. The way a Martini's supposed to

Speaker:

be. Blair, I hear

Speaker:

you. I feel you shouldn't be

Speaker:

drinking. You're 17 years old.

Speaker:

But met you are. Right.

Speaker:

Um, but also, I love, you know, here's Jenny,

Speaker:

you know. No, I don't. Instead of. No, I don't

Speaker:

drink. No, I don't like that

Speaker:

drink. That's not what it

Speaker:

is. And it's, you know, she.

Speaker:

Yeah, but she goes with it.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. Which, you know, most kids

Speaker:

probably would.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And I never

Speaker:

get the impression that Jenny is really

Speaker:

drunk throughout it. So

Speaker:

she definitely has the impression of

Speaker:

someone who either can already

Speaker:

hold their liquor anyway, which I don't think so,

Speaker:

because I really got the impression she didn't drink.

Speaker:

So more likely, she's really good at

Speaker:

being subtle at how much she's drinking,

Speaker:

which. That's an art, too.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

And Rufus tries calling Allison and

Speaker:

hangs up when a man answers the phone.

Speaker:

Rufus is devastating.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. Not a good lookout.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Oh, she just got out of the shower.

Speaker:

>> Steve: I'm. I'm friend.

Speaker:

Oh.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh,

Speaker:

uh, poor

Speaker:

Rufus.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Poor Rufus.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh.

Speaker:

We return to the worst date ever, and it is revealed

Speaker:

Serena secretly paid for dinner. The pair

Speaker:

finally communicate, and things are looking up.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And I loved this moment

Speaker:

because we are kind of caught in a

Speaker:

cliche of the bombing the date and bombing the

Speaker:

date by going to the place thats too expensive and

Speaker:

out of your league. And the way that

Speaker:

Serena comes back, and she's like,

Speaker:

I already paid for it. And he's like, I can pay for

Speaker:

this. I know you can, but you shouldn't

Speaker:

have to spend your money here. Like, uh,

Speaker:

the whole idea of, like, this. I can have this anytime.

Speaker:

Take me where you want to take me. Take me on

Speaker:

your date. And that just really

Speaker:

felt. It felt like a

Speaker:

much better resolution than we often

Speaker:

get in teen

Speaker:

dramas.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Well, yeah, they learn that

Speaker:

communication helps the relationship.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And let's. Let's.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Let's.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Hopefully, they, uh. Uh, they can keep that lesson.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: All.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Ah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Right. And then back at the

Speaker:

sleepover, the drinks continue to flow. When Jenny gets

Speaker:

an so's text from Eric on, Blair

Speaker:

dares Jenny to break Eric out of the hospital.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yes. And,

Speaker:

man, this is so great, too. When. When

Speaker:

Jenny. Because you see that Jenny, you

Speaker:

know, wants to do this, she

Speaker:

knows that it's. That it's trouble, but she

Speaker:

wants to do it. You know, she wants

Speaker:

to rescue Eric, and.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And that is the end of act two. And we go to

Speaker:

act three. Jenny arrives at Eric's

Speaker:

room as Blair is faking being wasted to distract the

Speaker:

floor nurses. Somehow, the scheme works, and they

Speaker:

get Eric out. First of all,

Speaker:

great acting by Layton, but second, all

Speaker:

the security is horrible at this place.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, I'm just going to say, in general,

Speaker:

the practices of the Ostrov

Speaker:

center, the security, the.

Speaker:

Yeah, you can go to that party.

Speaker:

>> Leif: But you can't go.

Speaker:

>> Steve: There's. There's a bit of questionable

Speaker:

methodology going on there. Um, but

Speaker:

also, Leighton, when it's

Speaker:

like, uh, what's the line

Speaker:

where she says, I'm on this. I'm on this.

Speaker:

I'm on all the Pams.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. Mouths of Pam.

Speaker:

All the pams. Really?

Speaker:

>> Steve: All the pams. Really?

Speaker:

>> Leif: That was great. Um, and

Speaker:

then Lily receives a call that Eric

Speaker:

has escaped with a young, beautiful blonde

Speaker:

girl. Lily, of course, assumes

Speaker:

Serena.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Because as we've. As we

Speaker:

know, Serena and jenny,

Speaker:

practically identical twins.

Speaker:

>> Leif: It's easy to mix them up.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. They're just, what,

Speaker:

like, five inch height difference.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. All,

Speaker:

uh, right.

Speaker:

And then at the pool, the date is

Speaker:

finally looking up as Dan is apparently good enough to

Speaker:

win money at pool.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Um. Um, again,

Speaker:

we're. We're back in. In a cliche

Speaker:

date, but I also I'm not

Speaker:

upset with it because I feel like we actually see Dan

Speaker:

being Dan and

Speaker:

being more natural and Serena

Speaker:

getting to. Actually get to know him

Speaker:

and, you know. Yeah, actually, and

Speaker:

actually be outside of her comfort

Speaker:

zone, which.

Speaker:

Where I, uh, not that I don't really feel Serena has a

Speaker:

comfort zone. You know, I feel like she's

Speaker:

comfortable anywhere, wherever she goes. She's just got

Speaker:

that confidence. Um, but,

Speaker:

you know, it is out of her routine,

Speaker:

out of her norm.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. And then Rufus

Speaker:

receives a phone call from lily, who is looking for

Speaker:

Daniel, who is with Serena, who may or may not be

Speaker:

with Eric, and he's.

Speaker:

>> Steve: So fuck off about it, too. And

Speaker:

it's like, you know, hey, my kid's a good

Speaker:

kid. Like, even though your kid

Speaker:

did break out Eric, it's just the

Speaker:

wrong year.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Kid broke Eric out.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Like, your kid is guilty, but not the kid

Speaker:

either of you think it is. Um, but,

Speaker:

yeah, Rufus just being like, hey, their

Speaker:

kids on a date, and it's not

Speaker:

them, so fuck off, essentially,

Speaker:

and. And hangs up on

Speaker:

Lily. Um, granted, Rufus

Speaker:

is having a day.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. Again,

Speaker:

you know, it's always like, right. You know, she always. Lily

Speaker:

always comes in right after he's been dealing with Alison stuff.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah. But. But also,

Speaker:

kudos to Dan for talking him out of driving.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, and then he immediately reconsiders and, you know,

Speaker:

tries to call Dan.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah, he. And that's. And that tells you a lot

Speaker:

about Rufus, too. Like, fuck off, lady.

Speaker:

This isn't, you know, my kid isn't your problem,

Speaker:

but also, okay, you do have a problem. I'm gonna see if I can help

Speaker:

you.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And the sleepover. Plus, Eric has moved to a

Speaker:

club. The dares escalate.

Speaker:

Does Blair have a new protege?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. I mean, they. They start.

Speaker:

They, uh, the whole

Speaker:

steal. She steals his phone, go make out.

Speaker:

>> Leif: With that guy, and then she steals.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And then she steals his phone and has Jenny

Speaker:

call her girlfriend.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Fantastic. And again, Jenny's

Speaker:

just every step of the way like Jen, you

Speaker:

know, uh, Jenny

Speaker:

real every step of the way is realizing that the game

Speaker:

is just a harder game than she. Then she

Speaker:

realized, you know, she every step of the

Speaker:

way she, you know, just has to make

Speaker:

that turn where she basically puts

Speaker:

out her shoots and ladders piece and then realizes that

Speaker:

she's playing risk and then is like, okay.

Speaker:

And, ah, alters her game, you know?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. Back on the date, Dan is

Speaker:

going doing the classic teach the girl how

Speaker:

to shoot pool move. They are about to

Speaker:

kiss when Dan's phone vibrates.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Um, yeah, the interrupting the kiss

Speaker:

right before it happens. Um,

Speaker:

although something's vibrating and

Speaker:

I hope it's your phone. That's

Speaker:

cute. Yeah. Um, also,

Speaker:

uh, the jenny scene that I

Speaker:

wanted to mention the whole, um, um, this

Speaker:

is. But, um, um, no, she doesn't

Speaker:

say blair. What does she say? She she

Speaker:

does. She calls the girlfriend. Jenny calls the

Speaker:

girlfriend and says she's.

Speaker:

>> Leif: About to say Blair, but Claire.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Claire. Yeah, that's it. My name

Speaker:

is Clair.

Speaker:

Subtle.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Smooth.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Because he's blatant, dude. Definitely. Blair had a look

Speaker:

on her face too as she started saying yeah. Reacted right

Speaker:

away.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, and then back of the loft, Lily

Speaker:

storms in on Rufus. Lily

Speaker:

offers for Rufus to cook for her something

Speaker:

to eat while they wait for the kids to call.

Speaker:

>> Steve: I love, I love Lily in this

Speaker:

scene. First of all, it's kind of

Speaker:

hot the way she's like, you can still cook,

Speaker:

right? Like, you

Speaker:

know. Oh, no, I don't want that, that

Speaker:

swill you're drinking. But yeah, sure,

Speaker:

you can make me something that non premium.

Speaker:

Yeah. M

Speaker:

so good.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, yes. Back at the club, the

Speaker:

dares are starting to cause repercussions.

Speaker:

Dan and Serena arrives and things get turned up to eleven

Speaker:

as the group gets thrown out of the club.

Speaker:

Yeah, that guy's girlfriend showed up

Speaker:

pretty quick.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And Dan

Speaker:

is. Dan is

Speaker:

always ready to knock someone out if they talk to Jenny the

Speaker:

wrong way. Like, Dan is always ready to

Speaker:

throw hands for Jenny at, uh, uh, like, any given

Speaker:

time.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Although I was not a big fan of his comment about the

Speaker:

dress.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah. The napkin. Yeah,

Speaker:

yeah, he does.

Speaker:

>> Leif: The only thing causing a problem is the cocktail napkin you're

Speaker:

wearing.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. Which

Speaker:

why the idea that an outfit

Speaker:

can be the problem is really, it's.

Speaker:

Come on, Dan, it's 2007.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. Not a good look.

Speaker:

And then, uh, back to the loaf

Speaker:

lily and Rufus bought over their parenting while

Speaker:

cooking. And, you know,

Speaker:

we see Willie reveal why Eric

Speaker:

was at the Ostra center and, you know, kind

Speaker:

of reveals. Like, she blames herself.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And there's that moment where

Speaker:

drinking, drugs. No, he's a good kid.

Speaker:

Um, that, like,

Speaker:

the insinuation of, like, you're a bad

Speaker:

kid if you're drinking or doing drugs, which

Speaker:

I also get, like, the getting into trouble

Speaker:

thing versus the harming yourself

Speaker:

thing. And. But

Speaker:

both things are typically.

Speaker:

Are typically born from. From trauma

Speaker:

and other sort and other things,

Speaker:

you know, which I'm sure the Ostrov center

Speaker:

does a great job of treating.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I mean, it seems like these kids

Speaker:

are pretty used to drugs,

Speaker:

alcohol pretty early and not even from a trauma

Speaker:

perspective just because it's there.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Well. Well, yeah. Well, sure.

Speaker:

But also, all of these kids have

Speaker:

trauma. Like, all of them, like,

Speaker:

yeah, they all do. I, uh, mean,

Speaker:

uh, Serena, known as the party girl.

Speaker:

Like, we have no idea what happened with her dad.

Speaker:

We have no idea yet what happened with

Speaker:

Chuck's mom. But we know that there's something

Speaker:

going on with Chuck's mom, too, that she's not in the

Speaker:

picture, which, you know,

Speaker:

family separation is traumatic. And all

Speaker:

of these families are separated.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, indeed. And then

Speaker:

outside the club, Serena, Blair and Eric have a

Speaker:

conversation. Um, yeah, they

Speaker:

were, you know.

Speaker:

Yeah, Serena's trying to protect Eric, but,

Speaker:

uh, Eric says, you know, he's

Speaker:

okay. You know, he wants to get out and be with people other

Speaker:

than mom.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And you, even if it is Blair.

Speaker:

I.

Speaker:

>> Leif: No offense. No offense.

Speaker:

>> Steve: None taken. I loved that.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Taken.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Because the other thing that we really see

Speaker:

here, we talked about this

Speaker:

in the previous episode

Speaker:

where, um,

Speaker:

blair out Serena for the

Speaker:

ostrov center. And then Eric tells her, no, it was

Speaker:

me. And Blair is like, oh, shit, this isn't the

Speaker:

person I wanted to hurt. And now you actually, once

Speaker:

again, see that? Like, these two grew

Speaker:

up together, too. And this is your. Your

Speaker:

best friend's siblings are. Are

Speaker:

your siblings in so many ways.

Speaker:

>> Leif: You know, uh, Dan

Speaker:

is worried about Jenny, but ultimately allows her to go back

Speaker:

to the party. And Dan walked Serena and Eric

Speaker:

back to their hotel. Much

Speaker:

better brother sister moment there.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. And actually,

Speaker:

I really love Jenny in this moment.

Speaker:

Once again, I know who they are.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Ah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: But more importantly, I know who I am.

Speaker:

So, yeah, I know what's going on.

Speaker:

I'm playing this game, too. Yeah,

Speaker:

I thought that was just an absolute

Speaker:

killer moment for Jenny to really

Speaker:

also kind of tell Dan, like, I am.

Speaker:

I'm grown up.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I, uh, have agency.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yes. Yeah, I can do this.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Jenny has one last dare outside

Speaker:

Eleanor's store. It's a. It's a trick. And Jenny

Speaker:

is trapped in the store as alarms sound.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And it's so funny because, like, you see this

Speaker:

happen.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Oh, uh, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: You see it every step of the way. Oh, yeah. Just go in there

Speaker:

and take that coat.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Why are you coming in?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. It's

Speaker:

also obvious that it's, you know, you're going

Speaker:

in there and I'm going to lock you in and call the cops,

Speaker:

so. Which, which,

Speaker:

it's. If you're

Speaker:

in Blair's circle already,

Speaker:

all of those people that already have

Speaker:

the abundance of wealth that if

Speaker:

they were caught in

Speaker:

a situation, uh, like this could

Speaker:

literally buy their way out of

Speaker:

any and all trouble associated with it. And now

Speaker:

you have Jenny, who may

Speaker:

not have that kind of cash

Speaker:

available to her. So it

Speaker:

is higher stakes for Jenny than

Speaker:

a lot of other people in this circle.

Speaker:

Blair's circle. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And that is the end of act three. We get

Speaker:

onto the epilogue.

Speaker:

Back at the loft, Rufus and Lily

Speaker:

reminisce about their past. Lily answers the

Speaker:

phone, and Allison is on the other end.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, um.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Womp, womp. And instantly, we

Speaker:

get the

Speaker:

tone of the relationship

Speaker:

between Lily and Alice.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. And it sounds like,

Speaker:

uh, they're close enough that Alison

Speaker:

recognized Lily's voice.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

Right away.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And, uh, they.

Speaker:

And you have to figure that there was

Speaker:

some crossover in those

Speaker:

early rockstar years.

Speaker:

You know, they. They clearly know each other

Speaker:

well enough to recognize voices.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And then, um, back at the store,

Speaker:

uh, Jenny smooth talks her way past the cops.

Speaker:

She gets away without issue and even

Speaker:

gets to keep the jacket.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And, man, five years later, she

Speaker:

couldn't have gotten away with this. You know, by

Speaker:

the. By the end of the show's run, she

Speaker:

couldn't have gotten away with this. But, like,

Speaker:

no, in 2007, no

Speaker:

one's picking up and googling what

Speaker:

Blair Waldorf looks like. Uh, you

Speaker:

know, her face isn't all over the papers and

Speaker:

everything.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: I don't know. This is my mom's store. Why would I have the keys?

Speaker:

Yeah, I don't have id. I'm 17.

Speaker:

I'm 16 years old. I don't have an id

Speaker:

yet.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, definitely would. Not passing. That's today's

Speaker:

time.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And so we move on. Serena and Dan are

Speaker:

talking about their younger siblings. Something

Speaker:

like that plays as we see Dan and Serena kiss for

Speaker:

the first time on the streets of

Speaker:

NYC.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yep. Great kiss. Great

Speaker:

moment. Like, great. You know, we've been waiting

Speaker:

for this. It's been building up for five

Speaker:

episodes now. And.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's great.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Mhm.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Great resolution to their story

Speaker:

arc that this episode.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. And then Jenny

Speaker:

shows up at the sleepover and wins the

Speaker:

nights.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: When.

Speaker:

>> Steve: When she leaves the sleepover,

Speaker:

she goes back, she leaves the

Speaker:

sleepover and she turns to Blair and she's like, first

Speaker:

of all, she's like, I'm keeping the jacket.

Speaker:

I'll see you on the stairs. Lunch. On

Speaker:

the lunch of the Met steps. I'll see you

Speaker:

there. Yeah. So, like, uh, because Blair,

Speaker:

game recognizes game and Blair's

Speaker:

like, you know, no one leaves. Like, oh, you're bailing.

Speaker:

No, I'm walking out.

Speaker:

I'll see you again later.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And I'm keeping a jacket.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, and I'm keeping your jacket.

Speaker:

>> Leif: That, Jack could probably cost a couple thousand dollars.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Jenny

Speaker:

fucking owned that. Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, everything in about Jenny in this

Speaker:

episode just plays the game

Speaker:

like a fucking, uh,

Speaker:

genius.

Speaker:

>> Leif: She is definitely a project.

Speaker:

>> Steve: The Bobby Fischer

Speaker:

of the upper east side

Speaker:

royalty.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Scheming.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, and so that is the end of the episode.

Speaker:

So we'll go ahead and get into some segments.

Speaker:

Um, so the song that plays, um, in the

Speaker:

montage, uh, where Dan and

Speaker:

Sridha kiss, and we get the whole

Speaker:

montage on most sites, it's

Speaker:

just labeled as something like that by

Speaker:

Tim.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And I remember

Speaker:

watching this moment and being like, holy shit. Is this

Speaker:

my first glimpse at Lincoln Hawk?

Speaker:

Because he's holding the album.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And I believe they, uh, intended it to be

Speaker:

that it felt that way.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, it felt.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, this song is

Speaker:

not on Spotify or Apple.

Speaker:

Um, it's only on YouTube. And it's under the

Speaker:

title song and wager

Speaker:

as, uh, the artist's name.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. S w. Right. Or is it

Speaker:

so n g s.

Speaker:

>> Leif: O n g s o n g o. Ah.

Speaker:

And then he. Which

Speaker:

they. He has one album on Spotify,

Speaker:

but not this song.

Speaker:

Um, apparently the guy's name is Tim

Speaker:

Bader. He's from Philadelphia.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: He's eagles fan.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Nice, nice. Go birds. Next

Speaker:

year, I guess.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. Um.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And.

Speaker:

>> Leif: But, yeah, so that. That's that song. Um, and

Speaker:

then a m little more trivia from the episode

Speaker:

when Blair comments, Jenny's outfit is too Hannah

Speaker:

Montana. It may be a reference to the fact that Taylor

Speaker:

Mumpson was almost chosen to play the character of Hannah

Speaker:

Montana until Miley Cyrus got the role.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. I really like that

Speaker:

bit of trivia, that whole scene, too. To this.

Speaker:

To this. To this. It was cute.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And then this is the only episode where Eleanor

Speaker:

Storm is seen or even mentioned.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, and it seemed like a tiny

Speaker:

little hole in the wall store, too, you

Speaker:

know? Like, you only see that

Speaker:

little boutique.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Almost, which makes

Speaker:

sense.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I mean, she hasn't even gone public yet. Yeah, she's in small

Speaker:

fashion line.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, we'll see where she ends up later.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Well, I mean, she has all that stuff. That's gonna work out great

Speaker:

with the captain, I'm sure.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Oh, yeah.

Speaker:

Um, so let's go into episode grades. I, uh,

Speaker:

went first last time, so you can go first this time.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Um, I really loved this episode.

Speaker:

I felt like everything was kind of

Speaker:

turned on its head. Like, everything that

Speaker:

was, uh,

Speaker:

they took a lot of cliches and kind of worked it out better.

Speaker:

Like, this is how things could work out better.

Speaker:

Um, overall, I thought the episode was an a.

Speaker:

Um, Jenny really shot

Speaker:

this episode up for me. Like, just every scene with

Speaker:

her made it just great for me.

Speaker:

Um, I knocked it down even

Speaker:

a little bit because of the complete whack

Speaker:

of Nate and chuck in this

Speaker:

episode. Like, they. They were definitely

Speaker:

missed. Uh, you know, I'm a

Speaker:

big Nate.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Stan, so,

Speaker:

um, I'm gonna go a little bit lower than

Speaker:

that. Um, I. Yeah, I was

Speaker:

not as thrilled with the trophiness as you were. I

Speaker:

thought they had trophiness and then replaced it

Speaker:

with even more tropes.

Speaker:

Um, so from the first half the episode, the only

Speaker:

part I really liked was Dan and Serena finally

Speaker:

communicating, but I did, like,

Speaker:

all the Blair, the sleepover stuff with Jet. Blair

Speaker:

and Jenny.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, they worked great together as actors.

Speaker:

Uh, so I'm going to give the episode, and like I said, no,

Speaker:

no. Chuck and Nate. So that was kind of. That

Speaker:

was missing. So I'm going to give it a b

Speaker:

minus.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: All right, on to Stockwatch. Uh, who do you have

Speaker:

going up?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Um, well,

Speaker:

Jenny skyrockets in this episode. Her

Speaker:

stock goes up and up. Um,

Speaker:

Dan and Serena, their stock goes up. They finally

Speaker:

did the thing. They finally had their good date. They finally

Speaker:

get their kiss. Stock goes up. Um,

Speaker:

Lillian, rufus. I had their stock going

Speaker:

up. They both kind of, uh,

Speaker:

they both had

Speaker:

parenting wins a little bit. You know, Lily

Speaker:

kind of, you know, opening up

Speaker:

and being a little bit more of a person for the first

Speaker:

time, uh, that

Speaker:

their stock. And then Eric also getting

Speaker:

out. M Eric stock went up, too.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, I also. Yeah, Jenny,

Speaker:

obviously, she clearly won the episode.

Speaker:

Dan, uh, Serena, even though I didn't necessarily enjoy all their

Speaker:

scenes, they seem to have fun, so I'll give

Speaker:

them stock up.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, Lily and Rufus, for their communication

Speaker:

and opening up together and reconnecting

Speaker:

finally. Um, even though Rufus,

Speaker:

you know, got the bad news about his

Speaker:

wife maybe starting to move on

Speaker:

finally. And then, yes,

Speaker:

Eric as well, because he got to have fun and hang out

Speaker:

with some people that weren't his, uh, family.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. Um, then

Speaker:

going down for me, the ostrof center,

Speaker:

their faculty, their staff, their security.

Speaker:

The ostrof center's stock went down for

Speaker:

me.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. Uh, not great on the security front. Uh,

Speaker:

for me, Allison, uh, gets an off screen,

Speaker:

uh, stock down for just being a cheating

Speaker:

wife.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And to me, like, to me, I would

Speaker:

concur outside of. She isn't

Speaker:

really a character to me yet, you know,

Speaker:

because she's just all off screen.

Speaker:

>> Leif: So I think going forward, we can

Speaker:

use anyone who's at least

Speaker:

mentioned anyone.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Mentioned in the episode, they have to.

Speaker:

>> Leif: At least be mentioned.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Okay. Okay, good. Good.

Speaker:

That's good to go on. That's good to go on.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And then who do you have, uh, for best outfit?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Dan's brown suit. Dan's suit. When.

Speaker:

When he shows up. And then Brown's not

Speaker:

my thing, and it's not typically Mike Huller, but, man,

Speaker:

he just pits him, um, owns that.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. He just.

Speaker:

>> Leif: It was very well tailored to.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Not trial, you forget.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: That well tailored.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. I mean, yeah. I think we're

Speaker:

also supposed to believe that it wasn't

Speaker:

tailored and. But it was super well tailored.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. And,

Speaker:

ah, for me, it was a, uh, Jenny's yellow, uh,

Speaker:

jasmine de milo dress with the black and gold

Speaker:

swirl print coat from Millie.

Speaker:

I thought she owned it and she just killed it

Speaker:

all upset.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was it.

Speaker:

Yet I actually didn't love

Speaker:

it. Didn't love the dress because of the

Speaker:

bow on it. Wasn't there a big bow

Speaker:

on the front of it?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Sort of like something wasn't a bow, just like I, like, kind

Speaker:

of a drape.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, I thought that part of it was. I just thought.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I think it worked for a character.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah, it does. Um,

Speaker:

yeah. But also a shout out to her

Speaker:

earlier outfit that. Where she. When she showed up,

Speaker:

um, and she had that, like, pink sweater,

Speaker:

the. The crocheted, like,

Speaker:

or knit sweater. That

Speaker:

made me really realize the sweater game in general on

Speaker:

this show is just on point.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, if you live in New York City, you gotta have good sweaters.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And good coats in general.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Okay. Ah, you got anything to

Speaker:

plug?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Um, I should be

Speaker:

at trying to think when this comes out,

Speaker:

but if it's not too late. February 8, I'll be at

Speaker:

McGillan's for their open mic.

Speaker:

Um, ah, that's in senator City.

Speaker:

>> Leif: We should come out tomorrow.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Okay. Oh, yeah. It is time for this to come out, isn't

Speaker:

it? Wow. Um,

Speaker:

yes. So February 8, come out to McGillens in Center

Speaker:

City and come see me play. I'll be the featured

Speaker:

act for the open mic. And if you play music, come play music for the

>> Steve: Oh, boy.

Speaker:

>> Leif: So we get to meet Vanessa,

Speaker:

a new character. Well, until next time,

you know you love us. Xoxo.

>> Steve: Take care.
