Foreign.

Leif:

Hey up residers and all you scandal loving listeners

Leif:

out there, you've just tuned into the non judging

Leif:

breakfast pod where the coffee is strong,

Leif:

the waffles are fresh, and the gossip is hotter

Leif:

than ever. My name is Leif and I'm your seasoned

Leif:

Gossip Girl veteran.

Steve:

And I'm Steve, your newbie, your

Steve:

greenhorn. You're. I don't know, leaf. What do we call

Steve:

the season two newbie in Gossip Girl terms?

Leif:

I don't know, but it sounds like you're still wondering. The Bassian

Leif:

desert while I found the Vanderbilt province land.

Steve:

Well, you just better keep grandfather happy

Steve:

then.

Leif:

Sounds good.

Steve:

So here's the deal, folks. Leap has been, listen, watching

Steve:

Gossip Girl since the very beginning. And I'm tuning in

Steve:

for the first time. And together, we're your dynamic

Steve:

duo, bringing you all the drama, romance, and

Steve:

sometimes questionable fashion choices of this

Steve:

iconic 2007 series.

Leif:

That's right. Each week we're taking a deep dive into the

Leif:

show. One episode at a time. We'll analyze

Leif:

all the obscure references, hidden parallels,

Leif:

and of course, the couture catastrophes.

Leif:

And along the way, we'll take a look at some behind the scenes

Leif:

gossip and stories from fandom.

Steve:

And since we're all about inclusivity here at the non

Steve:

judging breakfast pod, there is always room for you

Steve:

at our non judging breakfast table. So. So please

Steve:

grab a cup of coffee, a mimosa, or maybe some of,

Steve:

Chuck's special medicine, and let's go ahead and get

Steve:

started.

Leif:

Sounds good, Steve. And we got make

Leif:

some more room at the breakfast table this morning because we got a

Leif:

guest. We are here with Shari

Leif:

Weiss from Teen Drama or.

Shari Weiss:

Hi.

Steve:

Yes, thank you.

Shari Weiss:

Thanks for having me.

Leif:

thanks for joining us.

Steve:

Thank you so much for being here today.

Leif:

This episode will be released on

Leif:

January 20.

Leif:

Sherry, do you watch, Sex Lives of college Girls?

Shari Weiss:

I haven't, but I need to. I know I need

Shari Weiss:

to.

Leif:

So there's. There's a little thing this week, and, this is not really.

Leif:

Spoiler. Yeah, the cat. There's

Leif:

one, a male character named Kanan.

Shari Weiss:

Okay.

Leif:

And in the episode, he does this little. They're in

Leif:

the gym and he kind of lifts up his shirt, like show off his

Leif:

abs. And this guy, he's in good shape. He's in much

Leif:

better shape than me. And. But

Leif:

everyone's talked about the episodes, like, what's going on?

Leif:

They CGI his abs there,

Leif:

or was it a prosthetic?

Leif:

And you know, because also the episode, he was, a Halloween party

Leif:

and he was playing a boxer so you had his shirt off completely and it

Leif:

didn't have those, like, cartoonish abs.

Leif:

And then a day later, like, the next day after

Leif:

the episode came out, turns out the

Leif:

US Is the only broadcast that had this on

Leif:

it. It was not added for the

Leif:

other Canadian broadcast or anywhere else in the world.

Shari Weiss:

That's so strange.

Leif:

Yeah. So apparently, you gotta

Leif:

have cartoonish, abs in the U.S.

Leif:

i guess.

Shari Weiss:

We have high standards.

Steve:

I never wanted a six pack because I always had a

Steve:

keg.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah.

Leif:

Yeah. Anyways, we are here

Leif:

to talk about season two, episode

Leif:

21 of Gossip Girl, titled

Leif:

Seder. Anything. The original air date

Leif:

was April 20, 2009.

Steve:

Yes. One of, one of my favorite

Steve:

movies. I absolutely love

Steve:

say Anything.

Leif:

Of course.

Steve:

John Cusack.

Leif:

Yep. 89. Cameron Crow film with John

Leif:

Cusack. Ione Sky.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Even if you've ever seen it, most people probably know the

Leif:

jukebox above the head.

Steve:

Yeah, exactly. I actually worked in the mall

Steve:

where they met when I lived in Seattle. That's.

Shari Weiss:

Wow.

Steve:

Yeah. I remember watching and being re watching

Steve:

it in Seattle, and they drive by it, and I'm like, wait, I.

Steve:

I work there.

Leif:

so this episode was written by Amanda

Leif:

Lasher. This is her third. Third episode of the

Leif:

season. Previously wrote Pret de Por J

Leif:

and Gone with the Will.

Steve:

Yeah. Decent, right?

Leif:

Yeah. Good. Episodes and episodes directed

Leif:

by John Stevens. This is his first time

Leif:

in the director's chair, but you might recognize his name because

Leif:

he wrote three episodes this season.

Steve:

Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

If you watch the O.C. you'd also recognize his name

Shari Weiss:

because he was a big writer and producer

Shari Weiss:

over there as well.

Leif:

Yes.

Steve:

Oh, okay. So, so clearly a Josh

Steve:

Schwartz team member for

Steve:

sure. That was brought along.

Leif:

Yeah. This is his first time in the director's chair, though.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Steve, why don't you go ahead and read that Vulture recap?

Steve:

Sure thing. Because of

Steve:

Passover, the theme of Gossip Girl was,

Steve:

fittingly, redemption. As

Steve:

Cyrus, the drama's spiritual center,

Steve:

prepared a brisket for an evening seder, the

Steve:

characters around him continued to simmer in the

Steve:

oily stew pot that is the Upper

Steve:

east side, trying like so many

Steve:

aromatic vegetables to hang on

Steve:

to their individual essence while

Steve:

absorbing and being absorbed by

Steve:

others. After much mishigos,

Steve:

Blair was forgiven by Nate and later Cyrus

Steve:

for acting like a, social climbing

Steve:

psychopath. She is changing for the better.

Steve:

Chuck confirmed, who redeemed himself for his first

Steve:

season sin of trying to rape Jenny on the roof of the

Steve:

kiss on the lips party by offering her

Steve:

a heartfelt apology. Meanwhile,

Steve:

Serena was forgiven by her mother, Lily,

Steve:

for Running away to Barcelona,

Steve:

causing a scene at Eleanor Seder and the

Steve:

general sin of being an exotic

Steve:

butterfly who merely wants to be free, but

Steve:

sometimes makes mistakes. Oh, sweetie.

Steve:

Lily tells her daughter during their heartfelt

Steve:

conversation, which takes place in front of a glass

Steve:

doored refrigerator packed with colorful

Steve:

produce. I could never think of you as a bad

Steve:

person. You got into Brown.

Leif:

Any thoughts?

Shari Weiss:

It's fun. That was written by

Shari Weiss:

Vulture. yeah, by Jessica Pressler.

Leif:

And I think it's a man

Leif:

actually writes the. The recast for Gas.

Shari Weiss:

Okay.

Leif:

yeah, I forgot his name though.

Shari Weiss:

It was pretty spot on.

Leif:

Go ahead and get into the episode. We

Leif:

begin act one with another Blair dream

Leif:

sequence. She is a character in an Audrey Eprom

Leif:

film. Once again, this time Eliza Doolittle from My

Leif:

Fair Lady. Blair awakens to a Gossip Girl

Leif:

monologue. When you lose hope in a

Leif:

dream, sometimes all you have left with

Leif:

is sleepless nights. while some call the doctor for a

Leif:

refill, I find the best solution is

Leif:

a full social calendar.

Steve:

Something really interesting about this dream though. Cuz

Steve:

she's not just Eliza Doolittle, she's also

Steve:

Mrs. Higgins. Yes, right. So

Steve:

she is both the protagonist and

Steve:

antagonist here, showing that she's the one

Steve:

who's looking down on. On her.

Steve:

You know, she is the one who is not

Steve:

living up to her own standards.

Leif:

any thoughts on the dream?

Shari Weiss:

I just thought it was another example of the, of the

Shari Weiss:

classic Blair dream sequences where

Shari Weiss:

they blend reality

Shari Weiss:

and fiction in a way that is also a really

Shari Weiss:

great cinematic homage. you know, a lot of people think

Shari Weiss:

OSSA Girl is low culture, but would

Shari Weiss:

a low culture piece of art be paying

Shari Weiss:

tribute to the iconic films of Audrey

Shari Weiss:

Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe and all these

Shari Weiss:

other sequences that we see come to life?

Leif:

Oh, yeah, it's clear the writers are pretty

Leif:

big cinema. and literature nerds.

Steve:

Yeah, very much.

Leif:

Blair is catching Cyrus up on the gossip as he is

Leif:

preparing for Passover dinner. Cyrus offers to

Leif:

help Blair with nyu, but Blair has given up on

Leif:

college and has committed to the life of a

Leif:

socialite. Eleanor is clear clearly not pleased

Leif:

with this direction for her daughter.

Steve:

No, yeah, I, she's just not cool

Steve:

with raising a socialite, which I.

Leif:

Real north women are not socialites.

Steve:

Yeah, I love that about Eleanor is you're

Steve:

going to, you're going to get something

Steve:

more than just being a socialite.

Steve:

I, I've always respected Eleanor and

Steve:

her drive and her ambition.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah, makes sense. she's an anomaly in the cast of

Shari Weiss:

characters.

Leif:

Serena is back from Spain. She is greeted by

Leif:

a creepy Chuck, who claims to be over

Leif:

Blair. Chuck calls out Serena claiming to be

Leif:

in Spain with Poppy when Poppy has been back for

Leif:

town. Back in town for a week.

Steve:

Yeah. Chuck being gross. Yeah.

Leif:

I saw, the one reference to Vanessa

Leif:

in the episode.

Steve:

Oh, I didn't even catch that he referenced

Steve:

her.

Leif:

He said I had a thing with the boho barista for a

Leif:

minute.

Steve:

Wow. I didn't. I didn't

Steve:

even take that as a

Steve:

Vanessa thing. That's really funny. But also,

Steve:

Chuck catches Serena in her lie

Steve:

about being in Spain with Poppy.

Leif:

Indeed. Yeah. Chuck mentions the boho

Leif:

baristas. That's the one Vanessa mentioned in the

Leif:

episode. And he's saying, I realized I was 17 year

Leif:

old Billionaire with stamina.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah. Vomit inducing.

Leif:

Yeah. Blair and Nate are making out in

Leif:

front of the church. They go in and discuss Nate getting

Leif:

into Yale and Columbia. Blair gets more bad

Leif:

news when Maureen comes up and tells her that she didn't get

Leif:

into the Junior Whitney committee.

Leif:

Not good for Blair right now.

Steve:

No, it

Steve:

takes a while to start to matter.

Steve:

Just told her she hasn't begun to

Steve:

matter.

Leif:

And, ah, Nate being a little insensitive, talking about how he got

Leif:

into both Yale and Columbia.

Steve:

But also for you, Nate.

Leif:

in Brooklyn, Dan notices some possible

Leif:

sparks between Jenny and her lab partner, Wes.

Leif:

Rufus can't make any money and he refuses to let

Leif:

Dan get a job. However, Rufus leaves to go

Leif:

shopping with Lily, and Jenny thinks she has a job

Leif:

for Dan.

Shari Weiss:

I thought the idea that came up of selling the loft was an

Shari Weiss:

interesting one.

Leif:

Yeah. was that the last episode?

Steve:

That was the last episode. They're gonna sell the loft.

Leif:

This episode, he decides he's gonna sell the gallery.

Leif:

Right which way to go? Rufus,

Leif:

you need money, so sell your livelihood.

Steve:

Yeah, no, but, there

Steve:

is a willingness there for Rufus to live off of

Steve:

Willy. You know, he's like, lily wants to go buy a new

Steve:

whatever, and I'm going to go shopping with Lily instead of

Steve:

doing any of the responsible things I need to take care of. Like,

Steve:

I'm not going to the gallery to work right now. I'm going to go shopping

Steve:

with my girlfriend.

Shari Weiss:

He's slowly getting introduced to the finer things in life, and

Shari Weiss:

I think he's liking it more than he wants to admit.

Steve:

Hey, I think you are very.

Leif:

Just let her pay for college, God damn it.

Steve:

Thank you.

Leif:

Back at the church, the grandfather makes a deal

Leif:

with Blair to help convince Nate to choose Yale over

Leif:

Columbia.

Steve:

Bea knows the game.

Leif:

Yeah, but she should know that Nate doesn't like that kind

Leif:

of thing.

Shari Weiss:

She should, but it's not beneath

Shari Weiss:

her to play a game. Right.

Leif:

So yeah, it's definitely in character.

Steve:

Especially a game that feels like an

Steve:

easy wood, you know? Oh, I just need to

Steve:

nudge him in the direction of Yale. Sure. He's already, you know,

Steve:

fine. No problem.

Leif:

And also, like, previous to the scene, he

Leif:

was kind of definitely like on the fence. He

Leif:

wasn't leaning one way or the other.

Steve:

Yeah, he was definitely right down the middle. So it didn't seem like a

Steve:

hard thing to push him one way or the other.

Shari Weiss:

Well, except for the fact that he didn't want to go to Yale just because he felt

Shari Weiss:

like he was only accepted because of his

Shari Weiss:

grandfather. So I think maybe going

Shari Weiss:

to Columbia, he felt that was more

Shari Weiss:

of a genuine admission that he earned.

Steve:

Right.

Shari Weiss:

This is the Yale admission.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Cyrus gets a call from Serena who says she needs a

Leif:

lawyer. And we go to our first commercial break.

Steve:

Oh no. Who did she hand cocaine to?

Shari Weiss:

Who did she almost kill or actually kill?

Leif:

Back from commercials. Rufus is carrying Lily's

Leif:

shopping bags back to her apartment. Rufus is

Leif:

still whining about not selling any art.

Steve:

Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

Might actually have to be in your gallery and meet

Shari Weiss:

with clients to sell art.

Steve:

Yeah, it helps.

Leif:

Serena comes into the living room and Lily asks Rufus to

Leif:

excuse them. Lily is not happy about Serena's

Leif:

trip to Spain. Lily grounds Serena.

Shari Weiss:

I'm still amazed that ah, as like, as rich as these

Shari Weiss:

people are and the lifestyle they live, that

Shari Weiss:

she as this as a minor

Shari Weiss:

child is able to just leave

Shari Weiss:

and flee to another country. It

Shari Weiss:

will come back at will and what have you. And

Shari Weiss:

that's what ah, almost makes it hilarious, the idea of

Shari Weiss:

Lily grounding her. Yeah,

Shari Weiss:

she was grounded to obey that.

Leif:

Well, at least some of them are 18 at this

Leif:

point.

Leif:

We know Blair is definitely 18 and Dan is definitely 18

Leif:

because he mentioned.

Steve:

That when he was banging a teacher.

Shari Weiss:

Yes, I'd have get that in there for legal reasons.

Leif:

Yeah, just like the

Leif:

SC when they. They magically changed Luke's age.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah. With Julie. Exactly what I was thinking,

Shari Weiss:

Leif.

Steve:

And the other thing we've talked often about how Lily

Steve:

is a good parent to everyone but her own kids.

Shari Weiss:

Children.

Steve:

Yeah. And here's a great example

Steve:

of. As a parent, I know that one of the

Steve:

hardest things to do is stop and

Steve:

listen to what your kid is saying before

Steve:

formulating your ideas. And

Steve:

because you're already mad and you're already hot about it and it's

Steve:

really, really hard to step out of that moment and

Steve:

listen to their explanation and listen to what they have to

Steve:

say. But it's an important part of

Steve:

parenting to do that.

Leif:

Serena calls Blair. Blair comments

Leif:

on how much better being with Nate is and

Leif:

compares herself to the suffering of the Jewish people.

Leif:

Serena susses out that Blair won't be at her

Leif:

home all day, so she could presumably go

Leif:

see Cyrus without Blair knowing.

Steve:

Robin took pause,

Steve:

comparing her plight.

Shari Weiss:

Such a hard life that she lives.

Leif:

Poor Blair.

Shari Weiss:

She's been wandering in the desert for 40 years.

Leif:

Yeah. It looks like Dan got the

Leif:

cater waiter job as he gets out of the catering van with his new

Leif:

co worker and Dan goes into overshare mode

Leif:

before realizing whose house they are at.

Leif:

Eleanor walks up and mentions that Dan looks

Leif:

familiar.

Steve:

I love this. It is the start of some very

Steve:

classic farce writing,

Steve:

like the. The. A lot of the Satyr

Steve:

storyline. A lot of the Waldorf house

Steve:

is run like a farce, and most of it

Steve:

is done really well.

Shari Weiss:

that was my observation as well, that it was a classic

Shari Weiss:

Gossip Girl episode in that it centers

Shari Weiss:

around an event that brings people together in

Shari Weiss:

unexpected ways. And it's a, full farce all the

Shari Weiss:

way.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. Which, if I remember

Steve:

correctly, My Fair Lady. Although

Steve:

I don't think My Fair lady is classified as a farce.

Steve:

I think Pigmalion is the original

Steve:

play, so again, it ties into that

Steve:

opening scene as well.

Shari Weiss:

Right.

Leif:

Good point. Once inside,

Leif:

Dan is trying to get out of the job, but Eleanor offers to

Leif:

pay them double, which causes Dan's coworker Corrine

Leif:

to pressure Dan as well.

Steve:

That was so funny.

Leif:

Understandable.

Shari Weiss:

I mean, money's persuasive.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

And Eleanor knows how to get shit

Steve:

done. I need this done, Dan. I'm going to

Steve:

give you more money. Just do it.

Shari Weiss:

It's also funny that Eleanor even thought she needed a wait staff

Shari Weiss:

for like, the five guests that she was having.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

I like how much Dan actually knows about their. Like, she, like, oh,

Leif:

derota can help. Yeah, like, wow,

Leif:

Dan, you know a lot about Blair's house.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

We shift back to Nate and Blair.

Leif:

Nate, who earlier today was unsure about which college

Leif:

to choose, is now firmly in the Columbia

Leif:

camp. Blair fails to sway Nate back to

Leif:

Yale.

Shari Weiss:

It's interesting that she'd be willing to go along

Shari Weiss:

with Nate going to yell because that would make a long distance

Shari Weiss:

relationship for them. And you would think that she wouldn't want

Shari Weiss:

that, that she would find it for the sake of their

Shari Weiss:

relationship. She should want him to go to Columbia and just,

Shari Weiss:

you know, be in the same city. But it shows how

Shari Weiss:

misguided her motives are that she Cares more about

Shari Weiss:

working with the junior community and getting

Shari Weiss:

what she wants. And she's okay being, you know,

Shari Weiss:

hours away from her boyfriend.

Steve:

I also feel like, tied into that. There's an

Steve:

element of if he's at Yale,

Steve:

she can kind of vicariously

Steve:

fulfill her dream too.

Shari Weiss:

Okay. Versus being jealous of him.

Steve:

Right.

Leif:

And the possibility of getting in next year to Yale.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah. I thought you were gonna say when you said that

Shari Weiss:

if he's at Yale, in a way, the

Shari Weiss:

mice can play that, like, without having Nate in

Shari Weiss:

town. She's actually liberated in some

Shari Weiss:

ways to.

Steve:

That's probably to scheme and do

Steve:

her.

Shari Weiss:

And run into Chuck and, you

Shari Weiss:

know.

Leif:

We get a little Gossip Girl blur between scenes

Leif:

here. Obi, too bad

Leif:

you weren't invited to Nate and Trip's lunch, because whatever

Leif:

happened, it looks like you're the one paying.

Steve:

We've briefly touched on it last week, and now

Steve:

it's really coming through that Trip is a shit

Steve:

starter.

Leif:

Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

It was not until rewatching this that I realized

Shari Weiss:

why he's called Trip and it's called

Shari Weiss:

he's Triple because he's, William Milling

Shari Weiss:

the third.

Leif:

Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

And I feel like I went through years not realizing

Shari Weiss:

this. I just felt like he was genuinely

Shari Weiss:

like his God given name was Trip

Shari Weiss:

and not that it was triple. And that

Shari Weiss:

triple in itself was a nickname.

Shari Weiss:

This is my epiphany.

Leif:

It's a. It's actually a pretty common nickname

Leif:

for those Rick. People name their

Leif:

sons after each other three times in a row.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah, I wouldn't know that.

Leif:

And we see Serena is telling Cyrus that she got married

Leif:

in Spain. Somehow cater waiter Dan was hiding

Leif:

behind the much smaller Cyrus and overhears what Serena

Leif:

said.

Shari Weiss:

How's she gonna hide beside Cyrus?

Leif:

It's like, how do you not see him there?

Steve:

Yeah,

Steve:

yeah. You who hides behind Sean

Steve:

Wallace or Wallace Shaw.

Shari Weiss:

Tiny child.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Act two. Serena explains how she got drunk and

Leif:

may or may not have married Poppy's boyfriend

Leif:

Gabriel. Dan is understandably a little

Leif:

salty about this.

Steve:

Dan is hilarious in this too.

Leif:

Yes, you're the wife of the land of Genery,

Leif:

and I'm a cater waiter at Seder.

Shari Weiss:

I just love any story that brings Dan and Serena

Shari Weiss:

back together, and especially this one,

Shari Weiss:

because as we'll get to later in the episode, they do have to

Shari Weiss:

pretend that they're back. They're actually romantically back

Shari Weiss:

together. And, you know, as a Dorina fan, for

Shari Weiss:

the most part, I just. Just like when they're

Shari Weiss:

back in each other's webs like this, and, you know, they

Shari Weiss:

weren't For a bit because of. You know, we had

Shari Weiss:

Aaron and we had Rachel Carr and what have you. So

Shari Weiss:

there were interludes, and,

Leif:

And they got back together for, like, five minutes in

Leif:

between those two relationships somehow.

Steve:

And the other thing that I keep coming back to is that

Steve:

Dan really takes the we're friends

Steve:

seriously, and he really tries to be a

Steve:

friend to Serena a lot of the

Steve:

time. He's done it in the past few.

Leif:

Episodes, which Lily points out at the end

Leif:

there.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

At the rehearsal dinner, Blair asks Nate what's going

Leif:

on. Nate completely ignores the grandfather,

Leif:

who becomes suspicious.

Steve:

Boom, boom, boom.

Leif:

Rufus and Lily arrive at Seder. Eleanor is happy to

Leif:

see them and hints at Dan working in the party.

Steve:

I'm so happy you invited yourself.

Steve:

Seemed like such a. She was actually

Steve:

happy because she wanted the buffer but also wanted

Steve:

to make sure that she pointed out to Lily.

Steve:

Yeah, you invited yourself.

Steve:

The other thing. I loved the did you know?

Steve:

Well, you'll find out.

Leif:

Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

Which is just part of the great farce set up.

Steve:

Yeah. M. Yeah, it really is. It just,

Steve:

Everything has to be in a hurry. There's no time

Steve:

to explain that your son is here waiting tables.

Steve:

You'll find out. It was

Steve:

really well done.

Leif:

Dan and Serena enter the party. Serena says

Leif:

Blair invited her, and then she invited Dan. Rufus

Leif:

notices Dan is dressed like a cater waiter, but doesn't

Leif:

quite put two and two together.

Shari Weiss:

You know, I actually don't think his. His outfit was

Shari Weiss:

that. I'm a server here. Like, that much of

Shari Weiss:

a giveaway. I feel like somebody could actually get.

Leif:

Away with wearing that, especially since Dan is known

Leif:

for wearing vests.

Shari Weiss:

And it's black and it's white, and it's just. I don't

Shari Weiss:

know.

Leif:

It's a classic look.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah. And. And again, just the.

Steve:

The farcical Eleanor

Steve:

walks in. Oh, but Blair's not going to be here. All

Steve:

of these excuses that are coming off

Steve:

at, the top of their heads. It was. I loved

Steve:

that. This was my. Actually my favorite of those

Steve:

farcical seals.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah.

Leif:

Jenny and Wes are at the Vander Woodsen apartment getting

Leif:

ready to play Monopoly when Chuck

Leif:

bursts in with his conquest for the night. Wes and

Leif:

Jenny get a little awkward at Chuck's lurid

Leif:

display.

Steve:

I like seeing Jenny with a nice boy.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah.

Steve:

And Monopoly.

Shari Weiss:

She deserves some innocence.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah, she does.

Leif:

Back at the Waldorfs, Lily is talking up

Leif:

Rufus to the art collector.

Shari Weiss:

You know, even Lily has ulterior motives.

Steve:

You should. You should move your. Your. You

Steve:

should move your gallery to the city. It's Funny to

Steve:

me, because anyone who doesn't live in New York City,

Steve:

the city is all of New York City.

Steve:

Brooklyn is the city.

Leif:

Well, also the fact that he said Williamsburg is dead.

Leif:

I mean. Yeah,

Leif:

that didn't.

Shari Weiss:

Not in 2024.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah, it was.

Leif:

Funny artist.

Steve:

Yeah. I was gonna say that this was around the time that

Steve:

Williamsburg really started picking up,

Steve:

too.

Shari Weiss:

Right. Like, not. I'm not saying this to

Shari Weiss:

reference the Gossip Girl Max's version

Shari Weiss:

of it, but, like, if there was a Gossip Girl

Shari Weiss:

today, they wouldn't be beating on

Shari Weiss:

Brooklyn, like, in the way that the original

Shari Weiss:

series did. Yeah, there would be. There would need to be a different

Shari Weiss:

way to show that the Humphreys were of lower

Shari Weiss:

stature.

Steve:

Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

From the wrong part of town.

Leif:

And, yeah, I've not watched the reboot, but I believe the

Leif:

richest character is from Brooklyn.

Shari Weiss:

ob. maybe. I don't remember. I mean, I did watch all of it, but

Shari Weiss:

I've tried to block it from my memory.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

I watched, like, the first 15 minutes. I was like, no, it's not for

Leif:

me.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah.

Leif:

Serena tries to apologize to Dan about

Leif:

marrying Gabriel, but Eleanor repeatedly yells for Dan

Leif:

to get the matzah.

Shari Weiss:

Have a Seder without matzah.

Steve:

I mean.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

And I love. I love the whole time

Steve:

that I believe. This is also

Steve:

where Rufus kind of looks at Dan like, why would you do that? And he

Steve:

goes, I'm just gonna go with it. Now.

Steve:

She keeps talking to him like a waiter, and Dan

Steve:

keeps acting like he's. Or Rufus keeps acting like he's a

Steve:

guest.

Shari Weiss:

It's almost like.

Steve:

Loved it.

Shari Weiss:

They're building a house of cards. Or, like, the opposite of

Shari Weiss:

Jenga. Like, as each thing has happened, another

Shari Weiss:

card or another block is added, and it's

Shari Weiss:

like, at what point is this whole thing going to topple over?

Steve:

Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

We eventually see that it all comes falling

Shari Weiss:

down.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

At the rehearsal, Blair is asking Trip

Leif:

what's going on with Nate. Before Trip can reveal his

Leif:

conversation with Nate, Nate clinks his glass for a

Leif:

toast. Nate reveals that it was the grandfather

Leif:

who dimed out the captain back in season one.

Steve:

More shit starting from. From Trip, though. Like, we see

Steve:

that Tripp is a shit starter and he's not looking out

Steve:

for Nate's best interest, because

Steve:

what do.

Leif:

We think his motives are?

Steve:

Steve, My. I would assume

Steve:

that he wants Nate out of

Steve:

the family for his because he doesn't want

Steve:

Nate to gain any kind of

Steve:

position over him. That's my.

Steve:

That's my working theory right now, is

Steve:

that Nate now has this internship at the

Steve:

Mayor's office coming up, and that Trip is

Steve:

worried that Nate might try to get in his

Steve:

way.

Shari Weiss:

The timing is interesting because this is the backdrop of all this,

Shari Weiss:

is Trip and Maureen getting married, and you would think that

Shari Weiss:

Trip would want the focus solely on him, that

Shari Weiss:

it's his day, it's his time, and yet he's stirring

Shari Weiss:

with the pot in a way that takes attention away from

Shari Weiss:

him and puts it on Nate and the

Shari Weiss:

grandfather. So it's an interesting

Shari Weiss:

tactic.

Leif:

Oh, B. Looks like you hitched your wagon to a

Leif:

falling star.

Leif:

Gabriel shows up the Seder looking for Serena,

Leif:

and Gossip Girl takes us to the commercial break with this

Leif:

zinger. Baruch atta a

Leif:

Dios mios. This Passover is gonna

Leif:

get its own Spanish inquisition.

Shari Weiss:

Oh, my gosh. I hated that. I hated that

Shari Weiss:

one.

Steve:

I hated God.

Steve:

Gabriel, first of all, what the are you doing just

Steve:

showing up at some. Not even the person you're

Steve:

looking for. You're not even going to her

Steve:

house. You're going to her friend's house to

Steve:

a dinner they're having. Why

Steve:

the would this person show up here?

Steve:

It does align perfectly with any

Steve:

farce, for sure. It is

Steve:

very. yeah, as far as the writing scheme

Steve:

of being a farce is concerned. Yes,

Steve:

but in the realm of real life. What

Steve:

the.

Shari Weiss:

I was gonna say that I liked Army Hammer in the Social

Shari Weiss:

Network, but rewatching this episode reminded me that I

Shari Weiss:

think he just did a horrible acting job in this role

Shari Weiss:

of Gabriel.

Steve:

Terrible.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah, it's just a. Just terrible

Shari Weiss:

acting, and it's

Shari Weiss:

strange knowing where he is in

Shari Weiss:

2024.

Leif:

And what I was going to say was that in

Leif:

this show, everyone just shows up everywhere. So I always

Leif:

take that place. No one ever calls. They just show

Leif:

up.

Steve:

But Armie Hammer. I don't think they're serving what you like.

Shari Weiss:

No.

Steve:

I don't think it's kosher.

Shari Weiss:

No.

Leif:

He would flesh it out on the passover menu.

Shari Weiss:

No, certainly not at

Shari Weiss:

Elmer's.

Leif:

As, we move into Act 3, Dan

Leif:

interrupts the Seder to tell Serena that she needs to come to the

Leif:

foyer.

Shari Weiss:

I like your pronunciation there.

Leif:

Thank you. That's three years of high school

Leif:

French for you.

Steve:

Poor Cyrus. I really

Steve:

feel so bad.

Leif:

He really soldiered on through, everything that was.

Steve:

He did.

Leif:

Gabriel is trying to talk to Serena, but Serena

Leif:

interrupts to tell him that she is back together with Dan, who

Leif:

just goes along for the ride. Eleanor comes to

Leif:

the foyer, and, much to Serena's dismay,

Leif:

invites Gabriel to dinner.

Shari Weiss:

More the merrier. There's, you know, the Extra chair for

Shari Weiss:

Elijah, plenty of seats to

Shari Weiss:

go around.

Leif:

Speaking of which, do you want to explain that to our,

Leif:

non Jewish audience?

Shari Weiss:

Oh, I don't know that I sufficiently can, we leave

Shari Weiss:

a chair open symbolically for Elijah to

Shari Weiss:

invite him to our seder table. If you'd like to know

Shari Weiss:

why, I suggest Googling, if you can. I'm gonna

Shari Weiss:

sufficiently remember off the top of my

Shari Weiss:

head.

Leif:

So the basic gist is

Leif:

that he's there to confirm that the men

Leif:

are circumcised.

Steve:

I'm kind of glad he never shows up.

Leif:

He also takes part in Bris's,

Shari Weiss:

Would contribute further to the farce, though.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah, that component didn't take

Shari Weiss:

place.

Steve:

and Gabriel is super creepy

Steve:

too. Like, the acting

Steve:

just. And his mannerisms

Steve:

and his dialogue is just so, like,

Steve:

forceful and wooden

Steve:

in.

Shari Weiss:

A way that just. There's nothing that

Shari Weiss:

endears you to him.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And.

Steve:

And why would you. I, understand again, for

Steve:

the farce, it's funny that he stays,

Steve:

but why would you as a person walk into

Steve:

this place and be like, okay, sure, I want to

Steve:

meet all of your family. Person that I

Steve:

spent a couple days with who doesn't want me here.

Shari Weiss:

I think they lack self awareness in a way and, like,

Shari Weiss:

have a tunnel vision of like, this is my

Shari Weiss:

end goal and so I'm going to stay here to achieve it.

Shari Weiss:

Versus picking up on normal social cues that would tell

Shari Weiss:

him, oh, this is not the right time and place for this.

Steve:

I should write.

Leif:

Yeah. Jumping to the end of the episode, is

Leif:

it possible that the bad acting was intentional?

Leif:

Like, was the show? The character is not a good.

Steve:

Yeah, there's. There's that possibility too.

Shari Weiss:

But I like, I feel like in every episode

Shari Weiss:

where we have Gabriel, like Army's acting is

Shari Weiss:

adjust just this wooden

Shari Weiss:

terribleness.

Steve:

Yeah, he was terrible when we first met him.

Steve:

At the end of last episode for sure.

Leif:

At the rehearsal, the grandfather approaches Blair

Leif:

and gives her a five minute deadline to fix things

Leif:

with Nate.

Shari Weiss:

Five minutes? A whole five minute?

Steve:

Yeah. You just grabbed a teenage

Steve:

girl by the grandfather.

Steve:

Unbelievable.

Shari Weiss:

Even if someone happened to witness that moment,

Shari Weiss:

who in that room was gonna stand up to the grandfather and be

Shari Weiss:

like, manhandles her?

Steve:

Yeah, maybe Nate in this moment.

Shari Weiss:

Had he seen it?

Steve:

Yes, had he seen it?

Leif:

Things at the Seder start to heat up as Serena

Leif:

pulls Dan in to sit next to her. Rufus and

Leif:

Lily are both appalled when they see Serena and Dan

Leif:

holding hands. Cyrus attempts to soldier

Leif:

on.

Leif:

I like that Lily notices it. That

Leif:

has to point it out to Rufus.

Steve:

How fucking rude you're at

Steve:

someone else's party.

Steve:

And this is where the, where it started actually.

Steve:

Like I started to get annoyed by

Steve:

it, but I did like the the hand

Steve:

holding the. She. She's my boyfriend.

Steve:

I thought that was funny.

Shari Weiss:

And not only are you at Salatha's party, but like in that very

Shari Weiss:

moment, someone is trying to conduct a religious

Shari Weiss:

ceremony.

Steve:

Yes.

Shari Weiss:

You basically interrupt the proceedings to confront

Shari Weiss:

your kids on whether or not they're back together.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah.

Leif:

Chuck is getting hot and heavy with his date when he realizes

Leif:

he had already been with this woman previously. He gets

Leif:

up to get a. I.

Shari Weiss:

Was surprised that that was a turn off for him.

Steve:

Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

That killed his mood and I don't.

Leif:

Know why, at ah, this point he's just

Leif:

wants a new girl every, every night and he doesn't

Leif:

want the emotional connection because he's

Leif:

a 17 year old billionaire with stamina.

Steve:

Honestly, I bet that was a big part of it.

Steve:

The I've already been here and that

Steve:

is now becoming a relationship even though it's been a

Steve:

year after.

Shari Weiss:

Remember her?

Steve:

Yeah. but I'm saying that after, after being with

Steve:

Vanessa for a brief period of time, but

Steve:

definitely worse, I'm assuming more than once,

Steve:

you know, And I think that then

Steve:

going from that to being with someone he's already been with,

Steve:

it's like, oh, no, no, no, I'm not doing that.

Leif:

Yes. To a normal person who it, it seems

Leif:

weird, but, Chuck's twisted mind, it makes sense.

Steve:

That's kind of where I landed.

Leif:

Yeah. Out, in the living room, Chuck is

Leif:

once again making Jenny and Wes feel awkward.

Leif:

Jenny tells Wes to meet her at the elevator so they can take a

Leif:

walk. Jenny hangs back and absolutely

Leif:

eviscerates Chuck with her words. Oh, I love

Leif:

that. I love it.

Steve:

It was so good. And I'm so glad

Steve:

that they finally addressed the kiss on the lips

Steve:

party, that they finally addressed the

Steve:

assault in season one that we have just

Steve:

been doing this glow up for a season and a half

Steve:

of poor little Chuck. Lonely, poor little

Steve:

Chuck, sad boy with his dad dying and all that.

Steve:

But we finally have gotten

Steve:

that addressed from episode one.

Shari Weiss:

It was very satisfying.

Steve:

Yes.

Leif:

Yeah. We'll talk about where we get into the phantom section

Leif:

at the end. But yeah, people were actually surprised

Leif:

because like, people were considering the pilot episode to be like, not

Leif:

even canon at this point.

Shari Weiss:

Right.

Leif:

It was also mentioned that Chuck had a mom and like a couple other

Leif:

things that, you know, it was not.

Steve:

That Chuck had a mom, but that Chuck had his

Steve:

mom's pills. So

Steve:

it doesn't say she's alive. It says that he still has her

Steve:

pills, which. That's a little

Steve:

shocking that they're not gone.

Shari Weiss:

Have they not expired?

Steve:

Yeah, and it did. It made the kiss on the

Steve:

lips party canon, which I really

Steve:

appreciated that they did that and addressed it

Steve:

finally.

Shari Weiss:

Completely agree.

Leif:

At the rehearsal, Blair tells Nate that he

Leif:

did the right thing and that they should leave.

Leif:

Blair goes to get her coat and the grandfather steps in to

Leif:

manipulate the situation to his advantage. And

Leif:

Blair's downfall.

Steve:

We, we used to talk about Leighton Meester's

Steve:

acting all the time

Steve:

because it's always spectacular.

Steve:

And I feel like we haven't really talked about it as much,

Steve:

recently because we've just gotten so used to

Steve:

it. And this scene,

Steve:

her facial expressions,

Steve:

her reactions to Nate and Grant

Steve:

and everything around her happening, it was

Steve:

so moving.

Leif:

Mm, And Gossip Girl comes

Leif:

in with Watch out,

Leif:

Bea. Seems like just when you got

Leif:

it right, William Vanderbilt is going to do

Leif:

you wrong.

Leif:

And we go back to the satyr once again. Cyrus keeps

Leif:

getting interrupted by Dan, Serena, Willy,

Leif:

Rufus and Gabriel. The truth about

Leif:

Dan's job gets out as well as the fact that he and

Leif:

Serena are not back together.

Steve:

And this is where I was really like, what the

Steve:

fuck? How are you this rude and

Steve:

irreverent? You basically. It's

Steve:

basically like you're having this conversation at, at

Steve:

church, right? Like this is a religious

Steve:

ceremony that you were in that you invited

Steve:

yourself to. And now you're ruining

Steve:

it because your kids holding hands with someone.

Steve:

Shut the fuck up. There's time to talk after the

Steve:

ceremony.

Shari Weiss:

Or just politely excuse yourself. Hey, Dan,

Shari Weiss:

Serena, can we talk to you in the other room?

Shari Weiss:

Yeah, it can't wait. Of course it should wait.

Shari Weiss:

But there was a way to have that conversation that was

Shari Weiss:

not in the way that they did it. But this is that, this is that

Shari Weiss:

house of cards.

Steve:

Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

crumbling.

Leif:

And it just makes for good tv.

Steve:

And I loved, Yeah, it does. And I did love

Steve:

Dan being. And it's

Steve:

funny, I don't know if

Steve:

I would have

Steve:

recognized how

Steve:

disrespectful that was if I

Steve:

didn't marry a Jewish woman and go to a

Steve:

Seder every year for the past 12 years

Steve:

and really understand what, what

Steve:

it is. So I could see

Steve:

how to people that don't

Steve:

really know what it is. How it doesn't seem

Steve:

as rude or as

Steve:

irreverent. It was the irreverence that really got

Steve:

me. And I'm not a reverent

Steve:

person, but having that

Steve:

respect for somebody Running a religious

Steve:

ceremony. That was what got me.

Shari Weiss:

I'm, so glad you said this, Steve, because this is actually my issue with

Shari Weiss:

how, Judaism is treated on Gossip

Shari Weiss:

Girl, and why the line about, you

Shari Weiss:

know, like, bothers

Shari Weiss:

me so much, is that,

Shari Weiss:

instead of being treated with reverence, Judaism

Shari Weiss:

on the show is often used as a punchline. And, it's a way

Shari Weiss:

to,

Shari Weiss:

To me, it comes off as laughing at. Instead of laughing

Shari Weiss:

with. To your point, if you knew

Shari Weiss:

about how important a seder was,

Shari Weiss:

you wouldn't make it, a farce like this. Which is not

Shari Weiss:

to say that people don't have funny seders. There's

Shari Weiss:

fun songs that we sing at Passover. There can be

Shari Weiss:

silly moments. It's not like this, like,

Shari Weiss:

stoic thing. but

Shari Weiss:

the.

Steve:

It's a very jovial ceremony. It's supposed to be

Steve:

a very happy ceremony. Yeah,

Steve:

exactly. I always complain that I

Steve:

don't get to lay down at my mother in law's house. It's in

Steve:

the book. I should be allowed to lay down when I meet.

Shari Weiss:

At least get a pillow for your back.

Shari Weiss:

But just, you know, and it's.

Shari Weiss:

Is why I wanted, to discuss this episode. and

Shari Weiss:

just, of course, there's the great irony of

Shari Weiss:

the. The token Jewish character being

Shari Weiss:

played by Lala Shan, who's actually very

Shari Weiss:

anti Israel and has been outspoken in the last couple

Shari Weiss:

of years. And so there's. There's. There's

Shari Weiss:

layers.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah.

Leif:

Nate and Blair are leaving the rehearsal, and Nate

Leif:

confronts Blair about her deal with the grandfather.

Leif:

So. Yeah, Blair's busted.

Steve:

Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

As always, you cannot make a deal on Gossip

Shari Weiss:

Girl and expect that it will not be exposed at some

Shari Weiss:

point.

Steve:

And. Yeah. And my initial reaction is, does

Steve:

she now run back to Chuck,

Steve:

who, had. First time seeing this episode.

Steve:

That's. My initial thing is. Oh. Who she's

Steve:

gonna run to. Her safety net.

Leif:

Lily and Serena hash out their differences.

Leif:

Lily lets Serena know that she got accepted to

Leif:

Brown. Karine comes in and tells them that

Leif:

Gabriel just left.

Steve:

Yeah. Serena does not understand real life.

Leif:

No.

Shari Weiss:

How could she? She's. She's not been exposed to it.

Steve:

Yeah. where is Brown?

Shari Weiss:

Massachusetts. okay.

Steve:

I thought it was. Yeah, I thought it was. No.

Leif:

Isn't it Rhode Island?

Shari Weiss:

I think you're right. Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah, I think.

Shari Weiss:

Yes.

Leif:

And I only know that. I only know that because the OC

Leif:

Right next to risd.

Shari Weiss:

Right. I was thinking after Seth and Summer. You are so right,

Shari Weiss:

Lee.

Steve:

Yep. Risd, of course. Which was also

Steve:

mentioned on Gossip Girl, where

Steve:

Aaron went to school.

Leif:

Yes.

Shari Weiss:

Yes.

Steve:

Those are a long, long time ago.

Leif:

And the creepy Max guy.

Steve:

Yeah. Where Aaron went to college sometime in the

Steve:

90s.

Leif:

Serena chases down Gabriel, who informs them

Leif:

that it wasn't a real wedding and they

Leif:

are. Aren't actually married. Just as they

Leif:

are about to kiss, Blair pulls up in tears and needs

Leif:

her best friend.

Shari Weiss:

Okay, my two things here. How dumb

Shari Weiss:

is Serena that, like, she actually thought that they were,

Shari Weiss:

a, really married in a foreign country, and

Shari Weiss:

B, what is she seeing in Gabriel

Shari Weiss:

that is like, I want to

Shari Weiss:

pursue this guy.

Leif:

He's like, totally hot.

Shari Weiss:

Fair. Fair.

Leif:

Ah.

Steve:

I was also saying. I also was

Steve:

thinking about how dumb Serena is

Steve:

here.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

And Serena's never been

Steve:

a brain project. You know, she's

Steve:

never been a, ah, genius. But

Steve:

she's just so dumb here.

Leif:

Well, I heard her and Nate are the same thing.

Leif:

They go for the shiny object that's in front of them.

Steve:

Yes. Yeah. very much.

Leif:

They're golden retrievers.

Shari Weiss:

Right?

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Cruelty, justice. Serena Vanderwoodsen is

Leif:

falling in love. Blair Waldorf is falling

Leif:

apart. We move into the

Leif:

epilogue.

Steve:

I. I loved that. Once again,

Steve:

Serena about to kiss this dude she's totally

Steve:

into drops everything for Blair.

Shari Weiss:

Best friends, man.

Steve:

Best friends. She. She'll always drop everything for

Steve:

Blair. Blair can curse her out and then

Steve:

call her 20 minutes later and she drops everything for

Steve:

Blair. And I've always loved that about their friendship.

Leif:

Yeah. Chuck

Leif:

is moping in his room when Nate shows up to share the pity

Leif:

party. Chuck actually says something poignant

Leif:

and insightful about Blair not needing to change.

Steve:

I was glad to see them together again. I was glad

Steve:

to see Nate and Chuck being best friends.

Shari Weiss:

And it's still awkward. They're not with the same

Shari Weiss:

girl. There's no way for it to not be the elephant in the

Shari Weiss:

room.

Steve:

Yeah, it's stupid for. It's stupid to

Steve:

want her to be anything other than who she is. It was

Steve:

also, I, did like.

Leif:

That line from Chuck.

Steve:

Yeah, that. That's. That is true for any

Steve:

relationship ever, that if you

Steve:

want them to be someone else, then you don't

Steve:

want the person you're with.

Shari Weiss:

You could say Nate. Like, you know what you're signing up for when you date

Shari Weiss:

Blair Waldorf?

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah.

Leif:

Lily finds Dan doing dishes and thanks him for being

Leif:

a good friend to Serena. Rufus enters and

Leif:

announces he sold a painting to the art collector and

Leif:

plans on selling the gallery.

Shari Weiss:

I guess they just, like, looked at a picture on his phone and

Shari Weiss:

like, like, sure, I'll buy that painting.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And, ah, Rich people.

Steve:

I guess I'll find. I'll find something else to do.

Steve:

My suggestion, Release a new album.

Steve:

I'd like some fresh Lincoln Hawk.

Shari Weiss:

Okay. Like, he

Shari Weiss:

could open, like, a waffle restaurant where? Oh, yeah, just make

Shari Weiss:

waffles.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Blair and Serena are lying in Blair's

Leif:

bed comforting each other. Blair is regretful

Leif:

of a lot of things, including being rude to Cyrus

Leif:

earlier. Eleanor comes in and announces that there's someone

Leif:

here to see Blair.

Steve:

Yeah, just classic.

Leif:

Oh, yeah. I really like this scene.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

The friendship. Yeah.

Steve:

I didn't really have much to say about it other

Steve:

than, Yeah, yeah.

Shari Weiss:

It's sweet the way that they're cuddling together.

Steve:

Yeah. Yes. Yes.

Leif:

At the Vander Woodson penthouse, Chuck comes out to the

Leif:

living room to find that Nate has left. Jenny

Leif:

comes back in. And Chuck apologized for last year and

Leif:

says that if Jenny does move in, he won't

Leif:

be here.

Shari Weiss:

It was needed.

Steve:

Yeah. Once again.

Leif:

yeah. Tell her Taylor Momson really sold the scene.

Shari Weiss:

Yeah, absolutely.

Steve:

Absolutely.

Leif:

Despite the horrible haircut.

Steve:

Again, the fact that they made it

Steve:

canon and they addressed it and they

Steve:

brought it full circle. It was about

Steve:

time. It should have been done last season.

Steve:

I'm glad they did it.

Leif:

But, you know, now we know it's going to get out and

Leif:

everyone's going to find out because right now, only Dan, Serena are the only

Leif:

ones to know. And maybe Blair.

Steve:

Yeah. Probably Nate. Maybe

Steve:

the parents don't know. Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

Well, Lily has this affection for

Shari Weiss:

Charles that I feel like if she did find out about it, she

Shari Weiss:

would find some way to blame Jenny and excuse

Shari Weiss:

Chuck.

Leif:

Probably.

Steve:

yeah, that fair. I was

Steve:

also flashing back to the Jenny did

Steve:

get revenge on Chuck at one point at

Steve:

the masquerade when

Steve:

she tied him up without it or locked him

Steve:

out without his clothes.

Leif:

Yeah. Blair comes downstairs

Leif:

and apologized to Cyrus and asks him to help with

Leif:

help to get her into nyu. Nate is

Leif:

also there and it looks like he is going to give Blair another

Leif:

chance.

Steve:

After all, Cyrus is Sweet to

Steve:

Blair 100% of the time. Even when

Steve:

Cyrus does a scheme against Blair, it's to make her

Steve:

happy. I do love that

Steve:

he loves Blair the

Steve:

way that he does.

Shari Weiss:

If you're gonna have a stepdad, you want Cyrus to

Shari Weiss:

be your stepdad.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, absolutely.

Leif:

And also, once again, you get a shot of Eleanor,

Leif:

smiling in the background, which is nice.

Leif:

Serena leaves a flirty message for Gabriel and

Leif:

somehow manages to avoid licking the phone.

Leif:

However, we see the

Leif:

message come through on, Gabriel's phone and he is with

Leif:

Poppy. These two Are clearly up to

Leif:

something.

Leif:

Gotta lick something.

Shari Weiss:

Oh God.

Steve:

Lucky M. That phone wasn't a strawberry.

Steve:

I definitively.

Steve:

I hate guest stars on this show.

Steve:

M. There has. Has there

Steve:

been a good

Steve:

teen? I'm

Steve:

not. Aside from Cyrus

Steve:

and a couple of the other adults that will guest star.

Steve:

All of the young ones suck. Michelle Trachtenberg

Steve:

was terrible. Armie Hammer is

Steve:

terrible. Aaron is terrible.

Steve:

Rachel Carr. Every. Every

Steve:

one of these storylines, the Rachel Carr

Steve:

wasn't a terrible actor, but

Steve:

it was just some really up storytelling.

Leif:

So we end the episode with a Gossip Girl sign

Leif:

off

Leif:

on Passover. We ask why is

Leif:

it this night is different from any other night? But

Leif:

who are we kidding? Tonight's no different from the

Leif:

rest. These things always happen around here.

Leif:

Shalom, Gossip Girl.

Shari Weiss:

It's true. I mean, it's accurate. And then this

Shari Weiss:

shalom is just another

Shari Weiss:

to my point earlier.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah.

Shari Weiss:

The way things are. Punchlines, but yeah.

Leif:

So, Steve, any predictions?

Steve:

I'm predicting Jenny and Chuck.

Steve:

I'm. I got

Steve:

a weird. The way that. And I

Steve:

don't like it. It's the

Steve:

way that she looked at Chuck after he

Steve:

apologized and went away. And she gave

Steve:

him the sad puppy look that

Steve:

everyone has been giving Chuck since Bart died. But

Steve:

Jenny. Everyone has been giving

Steve:

Chuck the. Oh, you poor

Steve:

thing. But Jenny. And then

Steve:

she gave it to him when he walked away. And

Steve:

that kind of made

Steve:

something spin in the back of my head. Which

Steve:

also leaves the only two people

Steve:

uncommitted to another. If Jenny and

Steve:

Chuck were to have something happen, the only two open

Steve:

that are left that I keep dreading, that I

Steve:

keep saying is going to happen is Dan and

Steve:

Vanessa. So I'm just.

Steve:

I'm watching out for that because I'm waiting for that

Steve:

steamroller to roll over us like the Austin

Steve:

Powers. That's to me what it is. Like the Austin Power

Steve:

steamroller. I'm waiting for it to happen, knowing

Steve:

it's going to.

Leif:

So now that you saw this final scene, does this

Leif:

retroactively make Poppy's actions from last week make a

Leif:

little more sense?

Steve:

That she's trying to get something. She's

Steve:

scheming against Serena.

Steve:

Yeah. So

Steve:

yeah.

Leif:

She wasn't just being an.

Leif:

Yeah. She was directly manipulating her.

Steve:

Yes.

Leif:

It seems like.

Steve:

Yes.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

To what end? I already hate

Steve:

it.

Leif:

Any thoughts of what. What they're trying to pull?

Shari Weiss:

Yeah. What do you think the end goal is?

Steve:

I'm assuming some kind

Steve:

of illegal,

Steve:

maybe drug smuggling thing.

Steve:

Something like getting her to go back and forth

Steve:

to Spain and unwittingly do something.

Steve:

You know, sneaking something in her luggage.

Leif:

Okay, well, that is

Leif:

it for our episode. So let's go ahead and get into

Leif:

some segments. We jump into the wayback

Leif:

machine to visit the Television without pity forums from

Leif:

2009. Hello there,

Leif:

Peabody here. And this is the wayback machine

Leif:

for traveling through time. And this is my boy,

Leif:

Sherman. Speak, Sherman. Hello.

Leif:

Good boy. this week, a,

Leif:

vast majority, of the fans seem to be back on the Chuck

Leif:

bandwagon after being off for a few weeks.

Shari Weiss:

No. No. One apology does not make

Shari Weiss:

me back on the Chuck bandwagon.

Steve:

No.

Leif:

What the. I forgot to ask you at the beginning episode. Who are

Leif:

your favorite and least favorite characters?

Shari Weiss:

Vanessa is probably least favorite.

Leif:

Popular.

Steve:

Joy started with Vanessa. I was like,

Steve:

wait.

Shari Weiss:

favorite?

Shari Weiss:

I don't know that I have a favorite individual as much as

Shari Weiss:

there's couples that I root for, such as

Shari Weiss:

Dan and Serena and another Serena

Shari Weiss:

pairing that happens.

Leif:

Fair enough. so the.

Steve:

My. My one big theory, Sherry, is

Steve:

that they're all going to. So

Steve:

I. Who

Steve:

knows? Maybe. But. So whenever

Steve:

there is these different pairings, it's like I.

Steve:

I just. In my gut, I feel like they're all going to

Steve:

bang each other.

Shari Weiss:

That's an essential ingredient of a teen drama television

Shari Weiss:

show. The partners dosied out with each other,

Shari Weiss:

and it becomes this really incestuous web where everyone

Shari Weiss:

is tangled with everyone. And I thought it was

Shari Weiss:

interesting before when you said the one pairing we

Shari Weiss:

haven't seen is Dan and Vanessa, because there's another pairing

Shari Weiss:

that we haven't seen that you didn't mention.

Steve:

the ones that I've thought of before, there's

Steve:

Nate and Serena, which we thought was

Steve:

gonna happen at one point.

Shari Weiss:

From the pilot.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. Well, the pilot, but then also the end

Steve:

of season one into season

Steve:

two. Nate and Serena ran off

Steve:

together at the end. the other

Steve:

one that a couple weeks ago I brought up that

Steve:

they had chemistry was Blair and Dan. That

Steve:

when Blair and Dan were in the play together,

Steve:

there was something there that I. That I picked up

Steve:

on. And then I mentioned it to Leif, and Leif

Steve:

was. Was seeing it too.

Shari Weiss:

They match wits well.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

so most people like the episode overall. They

Leif:

thought it was a good episode. So, I agree.

Steve:

Yeah, I agree.

Leif:

People are actually intrigued about the Serena storyline

Leif:

for once.

Steve:

You, know, with the last half. Yeah, with the last

Steve:

scene. I get it. Up until

Steve:

then, the Serena storyline was the

Steve:

weak storyline.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Serena can't carry a storyline on her own through an

Steve:

episode. She needs Dan or

Steve:

Blair to carry in a storyline.

Leif:

Multiple people Thought. Hoped it would be

Leif:

Chuck waiting for Blair at the end of the episode and not Nate.

Shari Weiss:

I didn't think it would be him.

Steve:

Yeah, no.

Leif:

I mean, we saw Nate leave, so it's like, why would you think it was

Leif:

Chuck? Yeah, the

Leif:

SMB scene was great, which we've talked about. Yeah.

Leif:

yep. Surprising amount of Dan

Leif:

Hate for how little a role he played in the episode.

Shari Weiss:

I don't think he played a little role in the episode.

Leif:

I mean, he played a big role as far as the Kai,

Leif:

but he didn't really have his own storyline at

Leif:

all.

Shari Weiss:

But he was also integral into the.

Steve:

Way Serena's storyline

Steve:

unfolded and Eleanor's storyline. I felt like

Steve:

he. I, He, He was a supporting character in

Steve:

this. I think that he was one of those supporting

Steve:

characters that had a lot on his shoulders, though.

Shari Weiss:

Right. He was in scene after scene after scene,

Shari Weiss:

and he had his own agency in terms of how he

Shari Weiss:

got there. Like, he got there because of his own storyline

Shari Weiss:

of needing a job to make money.

Leif:

Fair enough.

Steve:

Yeah. And personally, I thought Dan was

Steve:

a. Was awesome in this episode.

Leif:

Funny, but he's. He's always funny.

Steve:

Yeah. And. And I also loved

Steve:

that, you know, by the end, when the whole. When the

Steve:

whole thing is

Steve:

exposed, it's Dan who's like, no, I'm

Steve:

not doing this.

Leif:

I'm not doing this anymore.

Shari Weiss:

But he did.

Steve:

Why am I doing this?

Shari Weiss:

He did take one for the team for a while, for his. For

Shari Weiss:

his ex. And. Yeah, it shows you what

Shari Weiss:

Serena means to him.

Steve:

I find that he does that a lot, that he gets wrapped up

Steve:

into it, and then at some point is like, am I doing

Steve:

it? Reminds me of Spike in the Buffy musical

Steve:

when they're at. When they're all singing at the very end, and

Steve:

Spike is like, why am I still doing this? And just walks

Steve:

off. Why am

Steve:

I doing this?

Leif:

The final point that I got from the forums was,

Leif:

where's Anne? Like, we get. We're getting all these

Leif:

Nate and his family storylines. Where is his mom?

Steve:

I didn't really think much of it because I would.

Steve:

I'm feeling like maybe she's too embarrassed to come

Steve:

around. Or then the other side of

Steve:

it. Maybe she is there,

Steve:

just not. We just never see her. Yeah. That

Steve:

she doesn't have an important. Or maybe. Oh, even

Steve:

better. This is the rehearsal. It's not the wedding

Steve:

itself. Maybe she wasn't invited.

Leif:

But what about the previous episode with the, With the Archibalds

Leif:

or the Vanderbilts?

Steve:

Trip went and got Nate and brought Nate.

Steve:

Right. That wasn't she wasn't again,

Steve:

wasn't invited. Maybe granddad

Steve:

grandfather is still trying to send her a bit of a

Steve:

message.

Leif:

Well, if. I mean, if I was ready the episode, I would like

Leif:

to write in her reaction to the. Even if she's not there, I

Leif:

would add a scene with Nate and her at their house

Leif:

and her reaction to this whole situation.

Steve:

Sure.

Shari Weiss:

But I'm guessing.

Leif:

Guessing the actress probably just wasn't available.

Shari Weiss:

Or they want to pay another cast member.

Steve:

I actually thought it was even more a matter of

Steve:

the writer just not thinking of it.

Shari Weiss:

Just come on, Amanda Lasher, step it

Shari Weiss:

up.

Leif:

So let's go ahead and move into some episode

Leif:

grades.

Leif:

Steve, why don't you go first?

Steve:

I gave this one a B. I thought

Steve:

it was a good episode. Even the

Steve:

stuff that I thought was clunky. And

Steve:

I thought that as far as a. An episode of

Steve:

Gossip Girl, it was good.

Steve:

I

Steve:

think, that the really

Steve:

shining bad spot is Armie Hammer's acting,

Steve:

which again with knowing that he's

Steve:

putting on a ruse, maybe that has something to do with

Steve:

it, but I didn't know that the whole episode

Steve:

and it was terrible.

Leif:

So what was the grade?

Steve:

B plus.

Leif:

B plus. Okay. How about you, Sheri?

Steve:

What do you got?

Shari Weiss:

I'm a B. and my reasons are,

Shari Weiss:

is I,

Shari Weiss:

think the Blair Nate grandfather

Shari Weiss:

storyline is a little snooze worthy. It

Shari Weiss:

feels a little low stakes. And that

Shari Weiss:

until we get to the end of the Jenny Chuck

Shari Weiss:

storyline, that also feels kind of

Shari Weiss:

like a filler type thing. the

Shari Weiss:

only, to me twisty,

Shari Weiss:

exciting storyline was the Serena Dan

Shari Weiss:

Sater one. so if there's

Shari Weiss:

three storylines, I think one of them only really captured

Shari Weiss:

my attention. And then also,

Shari Weiss:

I think the best episodes are the ones where the

Shari Weiss:

storylines converge, where

Shari Weiss:

everyone ends up at the party and the

Shari Weiss:

storylines intersect and everything explodes in a way that

Shari Weiss:

has ramifications for each storyline.

Shari Weiss:

And in this episode, the three storylines were very

Shari Weiss:

disjointed, apart from Blair and Serena coming

Shari Weiss:

together toward the end.

Leif:

So I like this episode a little better than

Leif:

you guys. I gave it an A because I just

Leif:

laughed a lot. And M. The

Leif:

party was just a great scene, even if it was

Leif:

somewhat offensive, but it just made for good

Leif:

comedy, so I gave it an A.

Steve:

Fair.

Leif:

All right, let's go over to Stockwatch.

Leif:

What do you got, Steve? Who's going up?

Steve:

Going up. I have Rufus going up. He made a

Steve:

sale and he's making life decisions.

Steve:

I had Jenny going up

Steve:

for having a boyfriend and

Steve:

for Telling off Chuck. I had Wes going

Steve:

up for landing

Steve:

Jenny and for being a sweet, sweet boy

Steve:

playing Monopoly. I have Nate going up

Steve:

because he's back in grandfather's good graces and

Steve:

even embarrassed grandfather. And grandfather,

Steve:

instead of being embarrassed, goes up

Steve:

and makes amends. So Nate,

Steve:

for sure. And, let's also throw grandfather

Steve:

in. Even though he's a complete piece of shit, he's getting what he

Steve:

wants.

Leif:

I mean, is he. I mean, Nate's not going to. Yeah.

Steve:

Was that definitive? Was that decided?

Leif:

What? At the. At the end, Nate says, looks like we'll be

Leif:

in the city together.

Steve:

Oh, okay.

Leif:

All right.

Shari Weiss:

He's still grandfather at the end of the day.

Steve:

Yeah. His stock, I don't know if it can legally go

Steve:

down without it, causing

Steve:

anyone else. I had Dorota for having

Steve:

the weekend off. Good for her.

Leif:

All right, Sherry, who do you have going up?

Shari Weiss:

So I have the same person going up and down.

Shari Weiss:

So should I share now, or do.

Leif:

We, do all the ups first, then the

Leif:

downs?

Shari Weiss:

Okay, well, chronologically, this is not

Shari Weiss:

going to make sense, but we're rolling with it. my

Shari Weiss:

upperson is Jenny because

Shari Weiss:

of the apology that she gets in

Shari Weiss:

the end. The acknowledgement of how she was wronged in

Shari Weiss:

this really grave way, was really

Shari Weiss:

overdue. And, it was

Shari Weiss:

an essential moment for her character,

Shari Weiss:

in her coming of age story

Shari Weiss:

and in the arc of the show.

Shari Weiss:

So the fact that something from the pilot

Shari Weiss:

that was extremely egregious was

Shari Weiss:

finally. Finally addressed, as we said earlier,

Shari Weiss:

made her stock up for me.

Leif:

Anyone else?

Shari Weiss:

Nope. She was my pick.

Leif:

Okay. For me, I have Blair

Leif:

going up because she still has

Leif:

Nate, and it looks like she's going to get into college after

Leif:

all. Nate going up because

Leif:

he was. He was his own man for

Leif:

once, and he got what he wanted. And looks

Leif:

like he's still going to have Blair. Cyrus

Leif:

because he was just a soldier all episode, and

Leif:

Eleanor because she's a good mom again. She's

Leif:

definitely done a big 180 since the

Leif:

pilot episode. I also had Lily going

Leif:

up.

Steve:

She's a whole new person from the

Steve:

pilot, literally.

Leif:

I also have Lily going up because, she had that

Leif:

night scene with Serena at the end, and. And she

Leif:

was trying to actually be. Be a parent for once. Yeah, she

Leif:

did ground her daughter for, like, probably the first time

Leif:

ever. And I had Jenny going up for the same reasons

Leif:

you guys had, because she got a. Got her apology.

Leif:

She got. She got her licks in. She. She gave

Leif:

it to Chuck really good there, that first scene.

Leif:

But that's all for ups. So who do you got going down?

Leif:

Steve.

Steve:

And actually, I'm gonna add Cyrus and Eleanor to my

Steve:

ups. I wasn't thinking of them, but I agree that

Steve:

they definitely came out

Steve:

on top. Especially we. I, I. You

Steve:

know what the, the. The thing that was never

Steve:

revealed at the end is I'm really

Steve:

curious as to whether or not Eleanor made a good

Steve:

impression on Cyrus's mother,

Steve:

if she's made any headways, and Cyrus's mother hates

Steve:

her. going down.

Steve:

I have Serena forgetting Blade.

Steve:

and I actually had Lily going down

Steve:

because for a few of the bad mom, like,

Steve:

the not listening thing early on and the whole,

Steve:

like, oh, no, you're a good person. You got into the college.

Steve:

You want to. Kind of really struck

Steve:

me in a weird way.

Steve:

But, that was my only downs. I had Blair.

Steve:

I had Blair remain neutral because I felt like

Steve:

she had the opportunity

Steve:

of going up, but then she kind of went down. And then

Steve:

kind of, I felt like she landed in the middle.

Leif:

Fair enough. Sheri, who do you got going

Leif:

down?

Shari Weiss:

So, as I said before, I have Jenny as

Shari Weiss:

my pick for both. and it's because,

Shari Weiss:

I guess you could say maybe they cancel each other out and she

Shari Weiss:

ends up being neutral. But up until we

Shari Weiss:

get that moment with her and Chuck at the end and they finally

Shari Weiss:

have that long needed conversation,

Shari Weiss:

her story in the episode just felt like,

Shari Weiss:

what is the point of this? Like, we just watched her just

Shari Weiss:

basically have this, like, very little

Shari Weiss:

innocent date with Wes that felt very

Shari Weiss:

pointless, and it felt like they just needed

Shari Weiss:

something to help flesh out Chuck's storyline,

Shari Weiss:

and she just felt very inconsequential to the

Shari Weiss:

episode. So as I was watching it, it just felt

Shari Weiss:

like there's nothing for Jenny

Shari Weiss:

here. And then the very end is what saved it for

Shari Weiss:

me.

Leif:

For me going down Serena, because she has.

Leif:

She's getting played. And then I also had

Leif:

Chuck going down because even though he does

Leif:

apologize,

Leif:

it doesn't redeem him. It's nice that he apologized,

Leif:

but doesn't redeem him. And also, he's

Leif:

clearly lonely

Leif:

and just living up

Leif:

not very fulfilling life right now. Mm.

Steve:

But here's the best outfits from the.

Steve:

Last episode we see.

Leif:

Go over to best outfit. Steve, who do you got?

Steve:

Blair's. The one that she was wearing

Steve:

at the end, the sort of

Steve:

mesh, the black and sort of,

Steve:

I guess, like, almost a

Steve:

peachish color. And then it had, like, the

Steve:

neck, the collar around the neck. So, yeah,

Steve:

Blair's, like, party dress.

Leif:

I really liked Sherry. What

Leif:

about you?

Shari Weiss:

Mine is much more subtle. I really liked the tank

Shari Weiss:

top that Jenny was wearing. I thought it had just

Shari Weiss:

enough edge, but it was also age appropriate.

Shari Weiss:

I thought it fit her really well and it was something that

Shari Weiss:

I would like to wear myself.

Steve:

Nice.

Leif:

For me, it was a very brief appearance. But

Leif:

Blair's dress from the dream, the black and

Leif:

white single strap dress. and the single strap was like a bow.

Leif:

And then she had the big hat.

Steve:

Yeah.

Shari Weiss:

Not her outfit as the beggar.

Leif:

No, it's Mrs. Higgins, the upper crust

Leif:

outfit. Well, that

Leif:

is it for segments. Sheri, thank you for

Leif:

joining us.

Shari Weiss:

Thank you for having me.

Leif:
