You're getting out parented by Anne and Howie

Steve:

Archibald.

Leif:

Oomph. Hey, Upper east siders and all you scandal

Leif:

loving listeners out there, you've just tuned into

Leif:

the non judging breakfast podcast, where the

Leif:

coffee is strong, the waffles are fresh, and the

Leif:

gossip is hotter than ever. My name is Leif, and

Leif:

I'm your seasoned Gossip Girl veteran.

Steve:

And I'm Steve, the newbie, the greenhorn, the, uh.

Steve:

I don't know, Leif. Now that we're in season four,

Steve:

where do I stand?

Leif:

I don't know. But what do you say we find Juliet

Leif:

and get us a little frontier justice? Sure.

Steve:

I actually thought I'd be the last person you

Steve:

wanted by your side, but let's do it. So here's

Steve:

the deal, folks. Leaf has been watching Gossip

Steve:

Girl since it first aired, and I'm tuning in for

Steve:

the first time. And together, we're your dynamic

Steve:

duo, uh, bringing you all the drama, romance, and

Steve:

sometimes questionable fashion choices of this

Steve:

iconic 2007 series.

Leif:

Bring your magnifying glasses, because each week

Leif:

we're dissecting every juicy detail of the show

Leif:

one episode at a time. We'll connect the dots,

Leif:

uncover those sneaky little Easter eggs, and of

Leif:

course, serve up some piping hot behind the scenes

Leif:

tea. And expect some iconic fandom moments too,

Leif:

because what's a deep dive without a little drama?

Steve:

And since we are all about inclusivity here at the

Steve:

non judging breakfast pod, there is always a seat

Steve:

for you at the non judging breakfast table. So go

Steve:

ahead and grab a mimosa, a cup of coffee, or roll

Steve:

up something from Chuck's stash, and let's go.

Leif:

Ahead and get started before we get into the

Leif:

episode.

Steve:

What is it now?

Leif:

We have an email from a, uh, friend of the

Leif:

podcast, Jaden.

Steve:

Oh, hello, Jaden.

Steve:

I wanted to give my stance on season's

Steve:

Thanksgiving episode gaslit, mainly with what they

Steve:

do to Jenny and Vanessa's characters. And I can

Steve:

already hear you guys getting upset at, uh,

Steve:

Vanessa from a distance. And as a Vanessa lover, I

Steve:

was upset with her too. But I wasn't like, mad at

Steve:

her per se, more mad at the writers, at the

Steve:

direction they took with her character in this

Steve:

season and for most of the entire show. Cause

Steve:

like, I believe Vanessa has every right to hate

Steve:

Serena, since Serena did kiss Dan while he was

Steve:

still with Vanessa, and Serena never apologized

Steve:

for it. I didn't mind the petty revenge, which by

Steve:

itself is not one of the worst things on this

Steve:

show. Chuck literally assaulted women on the

Steve:

regular, but Vanessa and Jennie were not

Steve:

responsible for Juliet drugging Serena when they

Steve:

literally had no idea and the fandom seems to

Steve:

forget that because they hate both girls so much.

Steve:

Truly, the only horrible thing Vanessa did was put

Steve:

the blame on Jenny so she'd still have Dan in her

Steve:

life even if it meant throwing his sister under

Steve:

the bus. That was what I was upset at Vanessa

Steve:

about, even if I gave her the slight benefit of

Steve:

the doubt because Juliet planted thoughts in her

Steve:

head that led her to do that. As for Jennie, these

Steve:

writers could not let her leave on a good note

Steve:

after being in episode six. And the fandom also

Steve:

tends to misinterpret Jennie's actions here. Like

Steve:

she only came back to help Vanessa to get revenge

Steve:

for Vanessa because Vanessa was one of the few

Steve:

people that didn't hate Jennie by the end of

Steve:

season three. I believe Vanessa was pretty

Steve:

grateful to find out she was cheating on, even if

Steve:

the circumstances and motives weren't entirely

Steve:

pure. And people try and say Jennie wanted revenge

Steve:

on Serena because of Nate when there was nothing

Steve:

explicitly stating that she believes what Vanessa

Steve:

and Juliet told her and how the NJBC humiliated

Steve:

Vanessa at the ballet and well, Jennie already

Steve:

dislikes Blair and Chuck doesn't care for Serena

Steve:

and she probably stopped caring what Nate thought

Steve:

of her long ago. I would go into deeper detail

Steve:

about that another time, but anywho, it just felt

Steve:

so heartbreaking to see Jennie's reaction to

Steve:

Vanessa betraying her like that was the final nail

Steve:

in the coffin. I was surprised they managed to

Steve:

even rebuild a relationship after the whole letter

Steve:

heart, uh, dress stuff with Nate back in season

Steve:

two. So this was way worse. And my last input is

Steve:

how much I hate how this show villainizes all the

Steve:

poor characters. R uh, makes the villains poor

Steve:

while the rich are the heroes. As much as I

Steve:

dislike Juliet, the way the main four were ganging

Steve:

up on her in four hours 08 was not iconic to me as

Steve:

the rest of the fandom deems it as it was just

Steve:

kind of gross. Plus Blair being a loser again by

Steve:

trying to banish someone. So for Jennie and

Steve:

Vanessa I cut them slack. Not only because of

Steve:

their lack of role in the drugging Serena part

Steve:

that Juliet intentionally left out because both

Steve:

girls would not have joined said plan if they

Steve:

heard of it, but also because of how the writers

Steve:

frame them as bad guys and how they're seen by the

Steve:

fandom.

Leif:

Thank you for writing in Jaden.

Steve:

Yes, we really appreciate it.

Leif:

You can send emails to non judging breakfast

Leif:

podmail.com. we are here to talk about Season 4,

Leif:

Episode 10, Gaslit. Original air date was November

Leif:

29, 2010 and this was based on the 1944 movie

Leif:

Gaslight, directed by George Kakour and starring

Leif:

Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman.

Steve:

I've heard of this movie. In fact, this is this

Steve:

movie where the term Gaslight comes from. Yeah.

Leif:

And yes, the description of the movie is. Ten

Leif:

years after her aunt was murdered in their London

Leif:

home, a woman returns from Italy in the 19 or the

Leif:

1880s to resume residence with her new husband.

Leif:

His obsessive interest in the house rises from a

Leif:

secret that may require driving his wife insane.

Steve:

Yeah, and I remember us talking a little bit about

Steve:

it. It's so fitting, though, this whole ploy. It's

Steve:

really fitting for this episode, which.

Leif:

Was written by Robert Hull and co written by Josh

Leif:

Safran.

Steve:

You could feel the heavy hand of Saffron. And

Steve:

Hull's done some other big ones too, hasn't he?

Leif:

Uh, yeah. So he has done the X Files. Uh, it's a

Leif:

Wonderful Lie. The Grandfather, the Lost Boy,

Leif:

Treasure of Serena Madre, the lady vanished, Dr.

Leif:

Strangelove, and goodbye Columbia.

Steve:

So that's two Thanksgiving episodes. Yeah, two

Steve:

previous Thanksgiving episodes, both really good

Steve:

ones, which I really liked. The Lost Boy, Is that

Steve:

the Yale?

Leif:

No, season three. That's the, like the second.

Leif:

Yeah, it's the second episode at nyu.

Steve:

Um, with Georgina.

Leif:

Yeah, yeah. When Dan's, like, hooking up with her.

Steve:

Uh, yeah, yeah. Okay. I think that was fun. I

Steve:

can't remember anything that I didn't like about

Steve:

the Georgina episodes in season one.

Leif:

Yeah, I really liked the early NYU episodes, but

Leif:

it kind of got stale.

Steve:

Yeah, I can see what you're saying. Although, uh,

Steve:

as I said, I liked the tone of season three being

Steve:

a little more grown up when they're not dealing

Steve:

with the Columbia stuff this season and they're

Steve:

doing stuff that is more detached from that. I

Steve:

tend to like it a little more, if that makes

Steve:

sense.

Leif:

Well, get, get ready to enjoy it because they're

Leif:

going to just keep phasing college out.

Steve:

Oh, are they?

Leif:

It's just going to. It's going to go away.

Steve:

I. I'm okay with that at this point. I feel like

Steve:

they tried it, that they tried to do a

Steve:

continuation of a high school show and just never

Steve:

found the right footing for it. So I'm okay with

Steve:

that.

Leif:

Yeah, I wish they would have just done like a time

Leif:

jump like One Tree Hill did.

Steve:

Oh, yeah.

Leif:

They literally skipped four years after high

Leif:

school.

Steve:

Oh, that. See, that's interesting. That's a see?

Steve:

Interesting, because then you could just come back

Steve:

and everybody's at that first season.

Leif:

Back was a lot of flashbacks of what the people

Leif:

were doing in college. Uh, yeah, some in college,

Leif:

some not in college.

Steve:

During the four years, I mean.

Leif:

Right. But it allowed them to spread out, go to

Leif:

different places.

Steve:

Yes. Yeah. Yeah. That's actually really cool.

Leif:

And this episode was directed by Tate Donovan.

Leif:

Does that mean anything to you?

Steve:

It does. And I'm not touching on why he's.

Leif:

Mostly known as an actor.

Steve:

Right. I was gonna say he's an actor.

Leif:

He was in Love Potion 9. Um, he was also on the

Leif:

O.C. as Jimmy Cooper.

Steve:

Oh, okay. Yep.

Leif:

And, you know, he was like, uh.

Steve:

A. Jimmy Cooper's the dad, right? Yeah. Misha

Steve:

Barton's dad. Yeah. He's a good actor. I've liked.

Leif:

And, like, in the 90s there, he was a. Like, a

Leif:

Hollywood Lothario kind of guy too. He did

Leif:

Jennifer Aniston and a couple other starlets, but,

Leif:

yeah, on the OC At a certain point, his character

Leif:

gets written off, but he remained friends with

Leif:

Josh Schwartz, and Josh Schwartz gave him a shot

Leif:

at directing, and he's done a few other things.

Leif:

He's done. You know, he did the OC A few episodes.

Leif:

He did a few episodes of Nip Tuck Glee. This is

Leif:

his first of two episodes. Doing a Gossip Girl is

Leif:

Nip Tuck Schwartz. No, that and Glee are actually

Leif:

both Ryan Murphy shows.

Steve:

Oh, okay. Um, good directing too. Yeah, I thought

Steve:

there was a lot of good stuff in this episode,

Steve:

especially performance wise.

Leif:

Yeah, this was a real spoiler alert for the

Leif:

grades. This was a very good episode.

Steve:

Yeah, I actually, for some reason, kind of. You

Steve:

told me when we first started this podcast that

Steve:

Thanksgiving is always a big deal and that those

Steve:

episodes are always huge. This one snuck up on me.

Steve:

I knew we had to be getting to Thanksgiving.

Leif:

Ah, this is also the first time it's on a 10th

Leif:

episode of the season, which is the Dan Serena

Leif:

episode, right?

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Which was definitely in full effect this episode.

Steve:

Yes. Yeah. So a lot of, uh. Just all of that, that

Steve:

kind of came. Came around. So why don't you go

Steve:

ahead and.

Leif:

Give us that vulture recap?

Steve:

All right, here we go.

Leif:

Uh.

Steve:

Traditions can be wonderful. But as the eponymous

Steve:

narrator of the Greatest show of Our Time, sagely

Steve:

observed traditions can also become hab. And

Steve:

habits, like, say, annual fests of extreme

Steve:

gluttony can be unhealthy. In last night's

Steve:

Thanksgiving episode, Blair managed to avoid

Steve:

indulging in two of her most potent Chuck and her

Steve:

father's. Pie. The rest of our crew was not as

Steve:

lucky. Dan continued his annual tradition of

Steve:

falling back into doomed love with his now

Steve:

stepsister Serena. Nate once again fell into the

Steve:

trap of believing his father had really changed,

Steve:

this time for real. Lily continued to believe her

Steve:

daughter is the same drugged out, crazy person she

Steve:

was four odd years ago, despite copious amounts of

Steve:

evidence to the contrary. And the Gossip Girl

Steve:

writers continued their tradition, started just

Steve:

this year, of letting Juliet run amok beyond the

Steve:

fringes of all logic or. Or reason. And they also

Steve:

kept up their ongoing tradition of driving us

Steve:

crazy with things that are hopelessly unrealistic

Steve:

and at the same time, including details that are

Steve:

uniquely true to life. Uh.

Leif:

So we go into Act 1 for the gossip Girl monologue.

Leif:

Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday. As always, I'll

Leif:

be spending it giving thanks for. For the bounty

Leif:

of secrets I've been harvested from you this year.

Leif:

But leave a place for me at your table. I'll be

Leif:

back for just desserts after Gossip Girl reaffirms

Leif:

her traditional day off for Thanksgiving. Read

Leif:

over a montage of the Thanksgiving day parade. We

Leif:

open with Dorota and Blair discussing her trip to

Leif:

Paris. Dorota thinks Blair is avoiding Serena and

Leif:

Chuck, but of course she denies it. Dorota forces

Leif:

the issue by suggesting they drop off a pie for

Leif:

Serena on the way to the airport.

Steve:

This was a great opener. I loved the. This. This

Steve:

pie isn't for you. And it's not to take with you.

Steve:

It's to drop off at the Vander Woodsons. Uh,

Steve:

Dorota. Just making sure. Dorota. Putting it out

Steve:

there. Knowing Blair is a softy for tradition and

Steve:

knowing that she's a softy for Serena.

Leif:

And we get to meet m. Baby Anastas.

Steve:

Yes. And we meet baby Anastasia for the first

Steve:

time, who is now learning pain in the ass in

Steve:

polish. That look when she whispers to the baby.

Steve:

And you see Blair out of focus in the background,

Steve:

flipping her head around to look. It was just the

Steve:

whole episode. The whole tone of the episode was

Steve:

just set right here.

Leif:

Eric is watching Rufus set the table. Eric seems

Leif:

worried about Serena and wants to go to Blair's to

Leif:

talk to her. Lily overhears and tells Eric. You

Leif:

will do no such thing, Lily.

Steve:

Classic Lily.

Leif:

Uh, yeah, she's pretty rough in this episode.

Steve:

Yeah. Yes. And we'll get to more of her because I

Steve:

think she had a phenomenal episode. But yeah,

Steve:

Kelly Rutherford had a phenomenal episode.

Leif:

Dan and Vanessa are pie shopping in Brooklyn. Dan

Leif:

invites Vanessa, but she is unsure about seeing

Leif:

Serena. Uh, Dan Confirms that he and Nate have no

Leif:

plans to pursue her any longer.

Steve:

They're both pretty much over and done with it.

Leif:

Nate is calling his dad to announce that he is

Leif:

stopping by before heading to grandfather's

Leif:

Thanksgiving. How he is still disappointed that

Leif:

Ann hasn't come to see him. After the call, Nate

Leif:

bumps into his mom's lawyer who was delivering

Leif:

divorce papers.

Steve:

I love that. One of the huge consistencies of this

Steve:

show is how terrible of a liar Nate is. How he's

Steve:

doing, he's like, well, she's, um, not home. She's

Steve:

getting her hair cut. Now. You could have stopped

Steve:

that. She's not home. Which already doesn't sound

Steve:

believable. But she's now getting her hair cut on

Steve:

Thanksgiving.

Leif:

Gotta look good for the grandfather, right? Blair

Leif:

and Dorota arrive at the penthouse and Chuck is

Leif:

already there. Chuck and Blair are friendly but

Leif:

reserved. Lily enters and welcomes Blair. When

Leif:

everyone realizes that Serena isn't with any of

Leif:

the others, they begin to actually worry for her.

Steve:

Yeah, this was sweet with Chuck and Blair. Like,

Steve:

we're going to run into each other. I'm not

Steve:

staying. We need to get used to this. And also

Steve:

them all realizing that nobody knows where Serena

Steve:

is.

Leif:

Yeah, now they're actually worried.

Steve:

Yeah, now they're actually worried. Which it does

Steve:

make sense that they weren't worried earlier.

Steve:

Mhm.

Leif:

Because, well, they all thought she was somewhere

Leif:

else.

Steve:

Right, exactly. Which for all of the shit that

Steve:

I'll give everybody later for not listening to

Steve:

Serena at all ever during this episode, at that

Steve:

point, it is like Serena. Yeah, it is Serena. To

Steve:

hop on a plane to Spain because everybody's mad at

Steve:

her. Mhm.

Leif:

But I mean, really, Lily thought she was at

Leif:

Blair's.

Steve:

Blair thought she was home. Yeah. Yeah. But to

Steve:

hide is Serena.

Leif:

Yeah. Serena wakes up in a daze, surrounded by

Leif:

liquor and pill bottles. She dials 911, announces

Leif:

she has no idea where she is and she needs help.

Steve:

I wake up in this hotel room. There's a phone. I

Steve:

dial 911. I don't know how I got here, and I need

Steve:

help.

Leif:

I'm Serena Vanderwald. Yeah, she remembered Dan's

Leif:

lesson.

Steve:

Yes, I'm Serena. Yes, I'm Serena Van Der Woodsen.

Leif:

Come find and help me.

Steve:

Yeah. Of the Van der Woodsen Bass, Rhodes family.

Steve:

Humphrey, Klaus.

Leif:

And we move into Act 2. Nate asked Dan to come to

Leif:

his house to talk about the divorce papers. Dan

Leif:

says his own parents are much happier post

Leif:

divorce. Nate is just confused by the fact that

Leif:

Ann stayed with the captain for all this time.

Leif:

Only to divorce him right before he gets out.

Steve:

I really like this scene. I thought it was. I,

Steve:

Dan. And throughout this whole episode, his wisdom

Steve:

in general, this just being like, this isn't your

Steve:

fight. Yeah, this isn't. This isn't your battle.

Steve:

And Nate being like, you know, she hasn't tried.

Steve:

Uh, he already talked to Howie earlier on the

Steve:

phone, right?

Leif:

Mhm.

Steve:

They already had that conversation, which I

Steve:

actually meant to bring up that it was once again

Steve:

Howie putting his shit on his kid. Again, like

Steve:

right back to all Howie putting his on his kid.

Steve:

But here's Nate feeling the responsibility of

Steve:

bringing his parents together. And Dan being like,

Steve:

it's not you, you, you can't do anything and it's

Steve:

on your parents. And Nate has a solid point. My

Steve:

mom has had two years to do this and she's doing

Steve:

it now without ever actually going to visit him.

Steve:

Without ever actually trying to see his progress.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

So Nate has a good point. I also just really liked

Steve:

Dan's. And I loved at the end when he's like. And

Steve:

thanks for your advice. No, never mind. Your

Steve:

advice sucked.

Leif:

Dan gets a call from Rufus letting him know Serena

Leif:

is in the hospital. And keep the news in the

Leif:

immediate family for now.

Steve:

Dan.

Leif:

Dan says he's on his way, which the.

Steve:

The keeping the news in the family for this thing.

Steve:

Nate is one of Serena's best friends. One of her,

Steve:

one of her three best friends. Chuck is her

Steve:

stepbrother. Blair is her best friend. The only

Steve:

person in Serena's life who is not included in

Steve:

this is Nate. And I just kind of felt like if I

Steve:

were Dan, I'd be like, hey, it's just Nate and I'm

Steve:

with Nate. I kind of got to tell him.

Leif:

I mean, I kind of get that. The other thing is

Leif:

they are still kind of competing for Serena also.

Leif:

I mean, Blair probably wouldn't have been there if

Leif:

she hadn't been at the apartment when they found

Leif:

out.

Steve:

Yeah, I get that too, that Blair was. But because

Steve:

she was is why I was thinking.

Leif:

And Dan didn't know that though.

Steve:

Uh, yeah, that's true. I'm also going to say this.

Steve:

Matt Settle had a good episode. I thought that

Steve:

this was some of his better acting in general

Steve:

because I found him to do a lot of reacting

Steve:

instead of like, Matt looked distraught, but it

Steve:

just felt like really natural. Like. And there's a

Steve:

scene coming up that I'll get into it more. But I

Steve:

liked Matt Settle. In this episode at the

Steve:

hospital, Blair.

Leif:

Um, um, backed by Chuck and Eric, is trying and

Leif:

failing to get News on Serena from a nurse.

Steve:

Yeah, you're a kid. You're just her friend. Chill.

Leif:

Rufus finds Lily on the beach and comforts. Uh, on

Leif:

the beach.

Steve:

I was singing.

Leif:

Rufus finds Lily.

Steve:

Serena's in the hospital. I'm going to the beach.

Leif:

Rufus finds Lily on a bench and comforts her. When

Leif:

Lily gets up to get some coffee, Rufus calls Jenny

Leif:

to let her know what's going on. Jenny, clearly

Leif:

shocked by the news, says she is coming right

Leif:

away.

Steve:

And Jenny here, thinking she's responsible

Steve:

immediately. Jenny the only one taking any

Steve:

accountability for what happened to Serena. Yeah.

Steve:

Uh, yeah. Oh, man.

Leif:

Vanessa arrives for Thanksgiving dinner.

Leif:

Thanksgiving dinner at the penthouse. And only

Leif:

Droda and her baby are there. Vanessa gets a text

Leif:

from Jenny that reads, serena in trouble. We

Leif:

screwed up. Coming home, Vanessa calls Dan and it

Leif:

goes right to voicemail.

Steve:

Yeah. And she's like, maybe you should ask Mr.

Steve:

Humphrey what's going on, Dorota. Yeah. I'm a

Steve:

little surprised Dorota recognized Vanessa because

Steve:

she's only seen her like, twice. Two, three times.

Steve:

I guess Vanessa just always happens to be around,

Steve:

even when it's inappropriate for her to be.

Leif:

Dan arrives at the hospital and has a distraught

Leif:

conversation with Blair about Serena.

Steve:

Uh, do you know how I loved the chemistry with Dan

Steve:

and Blair this whole episode? They were fantastic.

Steve:

Every time they shared scene time, it was

Steve:

masterful.

Leif:

The doctor finds Rufus and Lily and lets them know

Leif:

that Serena will be physically fine after the

Leif:

overdose, but wants to see if they are willing to

Leif:

put Serena into a forced stay. In rehab, they

Leif:

learn that Serena had antidepressants in her

Leif:

system. Lily is worried that she ignored her

Leif:

daughter in the middle of a mental health crisis.

Steve:

I don't believe they said that the antidepressants

Steve:

were in her system. They said that?

Leif:

Oh, yeah, they were in the room. Yeah, the room.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah. They didn't actually test for any of the

Steve:

drugs in her system, it seems, because they may

Steve:

have seen that it was like fucking formaldehyde or

Steve:

something. Ether or something that knocked her

Steve:

out. But, yeah, this for one, this is.

Leif:

Where I love the look that Lily gives Rufus after

Leif:

he says, not that we're aware.

Steve:

That we're aware of. It's just like, what?

Leif:

How dare you?

Steve:

And I loved that line. I honestly think that that

Steve:

was one of the best lines in the episode. And it

Steve:

seems like such a throwaway line, but it's like,

Steve:

does she battling depression? No, absolutely not

Steve:

is Lily's response. And Rufus has to be like, we

Steve:

don't know. We don't live with her. Yeah, we

Steve:

haven't seen her in months. The last time you guys

Steve:

have had a grown up conversation.

Leif:

It's reverse psychology on it.

Steve:

You. Yeah, you sent her into the arms of a. You

Steve:

know, of another man or are you got her to. God

Steve:

damn it. The reverse psychology for fuck's sake.

Steve:

But seriously, you. You haven't been. You haven't.

Steve:

You've never really been in her, been a full time

Steve:

mom to her. And now for the past four, six months

Steve:

you haven't been around each other. So yeah. The.

Steve:

You don't know if she's battling depression and

Steve:

Ruf is saying that and Rufus just laying that

Steve:

blanket on it like no, not that we know of. I

Steve:

thought was just a very important way and such a

Steve:

great. Again, the reaction from Rufus and the way

Steve:

that he responded with that I just thought really

Steve:

drove home the lack of relationship even more with

Steve:

Lily and Serena at this point.

Leif:

And next we get a quick scene where Nate confronts

Leif:

his mom about the divorce papers and kind of

Leif:

convinces her to give Howie a chance.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And at least tries to.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

He doesn't know he succeeded yet.

Steve:

Yeah. She's still skeptical. She takes the papers

Steve:

from him. And again, Nate's not asking for

Steve:

anything out of line, I don't think. I think a

Steve:

conversation is a reasonable thing to ask. And the

Steve:

other thing, when Ann is like, we're leaving at 6

Steve:

to go to grand, you know, we need to be leaving

Steve:

here by six to go to grandfather's. You can visit

Steve:

your dad tomorrow or whatever. It's like, lady, do

Steve:

you. Do you know how to talk to your kid? Like

Steve:

the, the. If you just told Nate, go see your dad,

Steve:

Grandfather will just be mad about it later. Mhm.

Steve:

If given a choice, Nate will always do the one

Steve:

that will make grandfather mad, even if he doesn't

Steve:

mean to.

Leif:

Back at the hospital, the wagons are circled and

Leif:

everyone argues for or against committing Serena.

Leif:

It seems like everyone except Dan wants to force

Leif:

her to the Ostrov Center. The argument is

Leif:

interrupted by a news story where they play

Leif:

Serena's 911 call. The doctor says Serena is ready

Leif:

for visitors, but at first Lily says she wants to

Leif:

put the involuntary hold on Serena and force her

Leif:

to the Ostrov center for recovery.

Steve:

And here, when we have Dan, did anyone talk to

Steve:

Serena? Has anyone asked her what happened? Has

Steve:

anyone asked her what's going on? And Lily just

Steve:

being like we need to just send her away just like

Steve:

she did with Eric. Just like she is always done

Steve:

with all of the problems that she ever has. She

Steve:

can't buy it off she'll send it away, which is

Steve:

kind of buying it off. And Dan just not having it.

Steve:

And I just thought that he was. And also, you have

Steve:

Blair, who is worried about Serena, who also

Steve:

believes that this is a cry for help. I really

Steve:

liked how we had Blair and Dan sort of being the

Steve:

devil and angel on Lily's shoulder to a degree

Steve:

where Lily's listening more to Blair because

Steve:

that's what she wants. But she does have these two

Steve:

different voices of people close to Serena talking

Steve:

to her. Mhm.

Leif:

We go into Act 3. Eric and Lily visit Serena at

Leif:

the Astro Center. Serena is feeling very betrayed.

Leif:

Serena insists that she didn't try to hurt

Leif:

herself, but Eric is really worried about her.

Steve:

I liked Eric here. How could you do this to me?

Steve:

Because I love you and I'm worried about you. I'm

Steve:

worried about you, and I love you. That's why.

Leif:

Uh, Although I'm kind of disappointed that Eric

Leif:

didn't talk to her a little bit more.

Steve:

I am too. I was too. Especially because when she's

Steve:

like, I didn't do this. And he was like, when I

Steve:

was here, I didn't want to be here either. Yeah.

Leif:

Now Eric's gaslighting her.

Steve:

Yeah, exactly. And. And so I felt kind of bad

Steve:

there, But I do feel like Eric wants to be there

Steve:

for his sister and didn't want to just lock her

Steve:

away, but also only knows what he knows from Lily.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Nate and Dan share some bro time in the lobby and

Leif:

discuss Serena. Dan wants to believe Serena, but

Leif:

Nate is still feeling salty. Nate has to leave

Leif:

when he gets a text from his mom.

Steve:

Yeah, not too much.

Leif:

If anything, this shows you that Nate is probably

Leif:

not the right person for Serena.

Steve:

Well, yeah. I mean, I also. Once again, I like

Steve:

that Dan's like, sorry, I didn't tell you. And

Steve:

he's like, it's cool. But also the way that Nate

Steve:

is just like, uh, like everyone else, like, no,

Steve:

this is a pattern. We've seen it. And this is how

Steve:

she draws people in, and I'm not gonna let her do

Steve:

it to me. Ouch.

Leif:

Jenny shows up at Juliet's apartment, who is

Leif:

playing dumb about the drugs, and Jenny wants to

Leif:

admit what they did and tells Serena she is sorry.

Leif:

Juliet suggests that Serena needs the help Ostrov

Leif:

center can provide, which temporarily stays

Leif:

Jenny's hand. As Jenny leaves, Juliet sends a pic

Leif:

of herself dressed as Serena doing a line of coke.

Steve:

It's her day off. Juliet let her alone. It's

Steve:

Gossip Girl's day off. And Jenny. It's funny how

Steve:

Juliet says, before you say anything, make sure

Steve:

you talk to me first. I am talking to you right

Steve:

now. I'm in your house telling you this. But Jenny

Steve:

instead is like, okay, come on, Jenny, have some

Steve:

backbone.

Leif:

Dan visits a still despondent Serena to try to

Leif:

figure out what really happened. Serena tells Dan

Leif:

that the last thing she remembers was choosing

Leif:

him. Dan gets a stupid grin on his face and tells

Leif:

Sarina to grab her stuff. It's time to blow this

Leif:

popsicle stand.

Steve:

I, uh, believe her that she was there to see Dan.

Leif:

Yeah, I did.

Steve:

I really. But I also feel that if Nate were the

Steve:

one to come in and show her attention, that she

Steve:

would have said the same thing.

Leif:

Possibly.

Steve:

Yeah, possibly. Although I think the fact that Dan

Steve:

is the one that will believe her through thick and

Steve:

thin to the end is the reason why she, yeah,

Steve:

chooses him.

Leif:

Juliet calls Vanessa, who is also going to the

Leif:

Ostrov center to confess. Juliet attempts to

Leif:

dissuade her by saying that they may forgive Jenny

Leif:

because she's family, but they will never forgive

Leif:

Vanessa, and Dan will just use it as an excuse to

Leif:

go back to Serena. After hanging up, Juliet starts

Leif:

packing a suitcase.

Steve:

First of all, too late. The driving her back to

Steve:

Serena thing, that's already done. Yeah.

Leif:

Also, uh, I like Dan and don't really like

Leif:

Vanessa, but at this point, why does she even care

Leif:

about him? Go back to NYU and live your life.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Any of these people that are all.

Leif:

Does Dan have, like, a magic dick or something?

Steve:

Maybe. I mean.

Leif:

I mean, he is distractingly pretty in this

Leif:

episode.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah, for sure.

Leif:

But still, have some self respect.

Steve:

Yeah. Well, especially like earlier on in the

Steve:

episode. And it's, uh, kudos to Jessica's acting

Steve:

when Dan and her are talking about Thanksgiving

Steve:

and she's giving these little looks of excitement

Steve:

when he talks about not wanting to be around

Steve:

Serena. But it's still. It's like everything that

Steve:

you have coming to you is your own fucking doing

Steve:

because you didn't just walk away and go to

Steve:

college. You're going home to your mom. You could

Steve:

have just chilled at the loft and gone to school,

Steve:

but you got jealous. Yep.

Leif:

Chuck and Blair are talking in the lobby. Um,

Leif:

Blair is glad they can be there together to

Leif:

support Serena. Before Chuck can respond, they see

Leif:

Jenny walking across the lobby. A very ominous

Leif:

scene.

Steve:

Yeah. And it feels like they're about to do

Steve:

something. But before they do something, uh, you

Steve:

know, she runs into.

Leif:

So. Yeah. Ah. Jenny is too late, though, when she

Leif:

goes to tell Rufus what the trio did to Serena.

Leif:

Rufus is being followed By Vanessa, who has

Leif:

already poisoned the well. Vanessa lied and pinned

Leif:

everything on Jenny. Rufus's self righteous

Leif:

diatribe is interrupted by Lily who who announces

Leif:

that Serena is gone.

Steve:

Yeah, but also Vanessa, you dirty dog. And like

Steve:

they like it's not gonna come out. Like it's not

Steve:

gonna come around and like they're going to still.

Steve:

Oh, because Vanessa told us this thing, we're

Steve:

gonna believe her over Jenny in the long run.

Steve:

What's your end game here, Vanessa? How do you

Steve:

really think this? Do you really think Dan, at the

Steve:

end of the day when Jenny goes and was like Dan, I

Steve:

swear on our fucking siblinghood that Vanessa was

Steve:

in on this, who is Dan believing?

Leif:

Plus Jenny smart. She'll find some way to prove

Leif:

it, right? Yeah.

Steve:

Jenny bugging hacked Serena's cell phone for

Steve:

Christ's sake. Like she'll get you Vanessa or

Steve:

she'll just tell Blair.

Leif:

Well, she didn't hack her phone. She just took her

Leif:

SIM card.

Steve:

But let her have it. She did a cool workaround on

Steve:

in 2010. She did this.

Leif:

Well, that was like the prime time for SIM cards.

Steve:

Yeah, it was, wasn't it?

Leif:

And I think that's why they probably stopped

Leif:

using. It was so easy to do that.

Steve:

Probably. Um, uh.

Leif:

We move into Act 4. Nate is at the prison to visit

Leif:

his father and is surprised when Ann shows up for

Leif:

the visit.

Steve:

After all, the second time in this series, and

Steve:

both were this season, that Nate gets some good

Steve:

parenting. And when she. Because when she said to

Steve:

him, we made a lot of mistakes in our

Steve:

relationship, but one of them is not. But you were

Steve:

never one of them. And if my son is asking me to

Steve:

do this, then I owe it to him. God damn, Ann.

Steve:

Finally doing something for your kid.

Leif:

Rufus and Lily, take a look in the mirror because

Leif:

you're getting out parented by Anne and Al.

Steve:

You're getting out parented by Anne and Howie

Steve:

Archibald. O. I actually wasn't entirely mad at

Steve:

Rufus this episode for his parenting with Jenny

Steve:

other than I'll get to uh, my m. I'll get to my

Steve:

one big issue with it later.

Leif:

We already had that big yell at her and totally

Leif:

bought Vanessa's story and wouldn't even listen to

Leif:

her.

Steve:

But then he has a conversation with her again

Steve:

after.

Leif:

I, uh, thought that hasn't come yet.

Steve:

Right. He hasn't had that one, which I think so

Steve:

yes, he had the blowout one. But I think that the

Steve:

later conversation with her I appreciate. So I'll

Steve:

get to that when he says it. But my bigger problem

Steve:

is actually even later Than that. And I'll say it

Steve:

when we get there.

Leif:

Dan and Serena are trying to figure out supplies

Leif:

from the meager pantry at the loft. It sounds like

Leif:

they are taking a trip out of the city together,

Leif:

where they leave to catch a bus. Lily and Blair at

Leif:

the door to stop them.

Steve:

Robin goes, so who's at that door as soon as it

Steve:

opened and Blair and Lily were standing there? Um,

Steve:

very predictable that somebody would be there,

Steve:

especially in how it was shot. But it was a good

Steve:

scene.

Leif:

Outside, Jenny and Rufus are arguing about who was

Leif:

involved in the scheme. But at the end of the day,

Leif:

he isn't Vanessa or Juliet's father. Jenny is

Leif:

truly sorry that Serena got hurt for real. But

Leif:

they both agree that she should have never come

Leif:

back to the city.

Steve:

And Jenny walks away when Rufus says, I'm not here

Steve:

to argue how responsible you are. One third, two

Steve:

thirds, you're my kid and they're not.

Leif:

I mhm.

Steve:

Wasn't mad at that.

Leif:

That part's fair.

Steve:

Yeah. And I feel like he has every right to be

Steve:

upset with her in this moment for what transpired

Steve:

that Jenny is saying. And granted, he shouldn't be

Steve:

listening to Vanessa over Jenny. But then when

Steve:

Jenny says, why are you taking her word over mine?

Steve:

He's basically like, I'm not. It doesn't matter if

Steve:

she's involved or not. It matters what my kid did.

Steve:

Which I did. Appreciate that, that notion, that

Steve:

sentiment of like, I'm not saying she wasn't

Steve:

involved. I'm saying that I'm upset that you were.

Steve:

And um, Serena was. From um, everybody's point of

Steve:

view right now, including Jenny. Serena was very

Steve:

badly hurt by something that Jenny and Vanessa

Steve:

did. And so Rufus has every right to be upset

Steve:

about Serena's health scare. That by all evidence

Steve:

presented to him right now is at least 33 and a

Steve:

third percent his daughter. So I get the anger.

Steve:

The thing I didn't like was when she said I

Steve:

shouldn't have come back here. The answer is not

Steve:

no, you're right, that's not what I'm saying. You

Steve:

shouldn't come back here and act like this is what

Steve:

you shouldn't do. And he's also not totally wrong.

Steve:

Because if you're only coming back here to fuck

Steve:

with your stepsister, no, you shouldn't come back.

Steve:

You really shouldn't come back just to play upper

Steve:

Easter side games and try to get your stepsister

Steve:

embarrassed or shunned or whatever your goal was

Steve:

actually to do. Get all of her friends to hate

Steve:

her. What do you think that's going to end well.

Steve:

So I do feel like he had a right to be upset and I

Steve:

do see his side. And I don't think it was as

Steve:

terrible as calling the cops on a fashion show or

Steve:

many of the other things. It's not the classic

Steve:

Rufus Jenny where he's not supporting the

Steve:

decisions that she's making for her life. It's not

Steve:

supporting her for being a to her sister. So I'm

Steve:

not as mad at him. I'll tell. And I'm still not at

Steve:

the part what I am mad about. But I'll tell you

Steve:

that later when we get there.

Leif:

Back at the loft, Lily and Blair are insistent

Leif:

that Serena go back to the O Center. Serena says

Leif:

she will only go back in a straight jacket and

Leif:

walks away. Dan tries to follow her and Blair into

Leif:

the bedroom, but is held back by Lily. Dan and

Leif:

Lily have a tete a tete on who knows Serena best.

Leif:

And Dan says she should have a real conversation

Leif:

with her daughter before deciding what's best for

Leif:

her. Lily admits she's afraid of what Serena will

Leif:

say about her.

Steve:

This was a fucking tennis match. This is one of

Steve:

the best scenes Gossip Girl has ever fucking shot.

Steve:

Yeah, it was amazing. Dan just going at. Because,

Steve:

like, Dan's not afraid to stand up to Lily. We've

Steve:

always known this. He's established that a long

Steve:

time ago. He doesn't give a shit if a parent is

Steve:

coming at him. If he thinks he's right, he's going

Steve:

to go at them. And for. For her to. When Dan says

Steve:

to her, I. From what I understand, I've clocked

Steve:

more hours with her than you have. Yeah, like,

Steve:

damn. And when Lily. And well, maybe you're. Maybe

Steve:

I'm not looking in the mirror. And when Dan takes

Steve:

that accountability. Yeah, maybe I do only see the

Steve:

best in your daughter. But I'm not trying to look

Steve:

in a mirror. I'm not. I'm not the one who's afraid

Steve:

to have a conversation with her and just lays into

Steve:

her. And then when he finally gets through, Lily's

Steve:

reaction. My God, Kelly. Like, you had me. Yeah,

Steve:

uh, you had me choked up. You had me feeling that

Steve:

all of the responsibility of motherhood that

Steve:

you've missed out on landing on your fucking head

Steve:

in that moment when Dan finally hit you in the

Steve:

head with. It was beautiful and one of my favorite

Steve:

scenes this show has done so far. And Pen, Pen,

Steve:

you're acting too. Like I said, it was a tennis

Steve:

match until Lily finally just smacked it home. But

Steve:

it was absolutely beautiful and, uh. Excellent.

Leif:

Excellent scene I wonder if, uh, Kelly was kind of

Leif:

channeling some of her real world motions. I think

Leif:

at this time was when she was going through her,

Leif:

like, custody battle.

Steve:

Oh, wow. That. Yeah.

Leif:

And, like, her, uh, kids were off in Paris.

Steve:

Oh, yeah. You can only imagine that you're now

Steve:

playing this character who's an absentee mom while

Steve:

you're away from your kids, which I also contend.

Steve:

The same with Matt. With. With Matt Settle, who at

Steve:

this point is. I believe it's the end of this

Steve:

season. He's divorced, so he's going through a

Steve:

bunch of his own shit while. Have. While he has an

Steve:

infant daughter at home right now.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Or toddler.

Leif:

Anyway, in the bedroom, Blair and Serena, ah, are

Leif:

talking about their respective problems. Serena

Leif:

thinks she was, uh, drugged. However, just then,

Leif:

Gossip Girl ends her silence to send a blast with

Leif:

the photo that Juliet sent earlier. Serena and

Leif:

Blair come back to the dining room, where we see

Leif:

Dan and Lily also reading the blast. Serena

Leif:

apologizes and says she wants to go back to the

Leif:

Ostrov Center. So she's even believing it now.

Steve:

Yeah, uh, this. That. Because when she's saying to

Steve:

Blair, and Blair's like, that sounds. She's, like,

Steve:

crazy. I know how this sounds, but this is what it

Steve:

has to be. And now she sees a picture of herself

Steve:

doing lines, and it's like, wow. Wow, what did I

Steve:

do? Like, I know I've had these times before. What

Steve:

did I do?

Leif:

And, ah, this is what the blast said. Afternoon,

Leif:

Upper, uh, East Siders. Or your dinners as filling

Leif:

as mine was. Hope not, because I have some dessert

Leif:

for you with sugar on top. It seems everyone's

Leif:

favorite party girl fell off the wagon and landed

Leif:

in rehab. Good luck getting a little handle on

Leif:

things. S. For the looks of it, you've got a lot

Leif:

to recover from.

Steve:

I didn't catch the sugar on top in the. In the

Steve:

original, when I was listening. I didn't catch it

Steve:

until you just read it. So that's really clever,

Steve:

uh, because we don't often talk about the Gossip

Steve:

Girl things. Her actual quotes. But the other

Steve:

thing with this is she was in rehab. She was at

Steve:

the Ostrov center because they thought that she

Steve:

was trying to commit suicide. In this picture,

Steve:

she's out doing lines. So is she out doing drugs

Steve:

or is she trying to commit suicide?

Leif:

Well, I mean, the news already said that she

Leif:

overdosed, right?

Steve:

Yeah, it's just. Yeah, well, no, it is, but she

Steve:

overdosed. But if you're gonna overdose doing

Steve:

lines, that doesn't really seem like a suicide is,

Steve:

I guess, what I'm getting at. I could be wrong. I

Steve:

mean, I guess, you know.

Leif:

Well, yeah, well, that's because. That's why, uh,

Leif:

no one else thinks it was suicides. That's just

Leif:

the people. That's just the family that thinks

Leif:

that.

Steve:

Yeah. Everyone else just thinks the party Gossip

Steve:

Girl's making.

Leif:

Yeah, yeah. She's talking about, you know, Lindsay

Leif:

Lohan reference in there and.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

Fallen off the wagon.

Steve:

Yeah, they got a low handle on things.

Leif:

As we move into Act 5, Dan and Serena are sitting

Leif:

in his bedroom. Serena thanks Dan for believing in

Leif:

her, but looking at the photo and having no memory

Leif:

of it, has gas lit her into believing she did go

Leif:

on a crazy bender? Dan says he will always believe

Leif:

in her, and the two share a chaste can kiss before

Leif:

being interrupted by Eric, who says, lily is

Leif:

waiting downstairs.

Steve:

Eric comes in, is like, you guys ready? I just

Steve:

wanted them to be like, can we just bang one out

Steve:

real quick before we go?

Leif:

Because I. I didn't really get that sense there in

Leif:

that movie. Like I said, it was. It was a very

Leif:

chase kiss. Yeah.

Steve:

Uh, it was not met.

Leif:

This was only a few months after Pen and Blake

Leif:

broke up. Really?

Steve:

Oh, wow. Oh, that's right. We're going to write

Steve:

you guys back together. Great. Thanks. I did like

Steve:

Penn here. I did like Dan when he. When he's like,

Steve:

I'll never stop believing in you, when even if you

Steve:

did do this, I still believe in you. So that's a

Steve:

good sentiment.

Leif:

Ah, Dan and Pat were great this whole episode.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah.

Leif:

As Serena and Eric are leaving the loft, Rufus

Leif:

comes in and, still angry, looking for Jenny. Dan

Leif:

apologizes for taking Serena from the Ostro

Leif:

center, and Rufus instantly forgives his male

Leif:

child and gives him a big, happy hug.

Steve:

Uh, there it is. There it is.

Leif:

Yep.

Steve:

That's the part I'm really mad about. Dad.

Leif:

I'm sorry.

Steve:

It's okay, son. Come here. I'll give you a big

Steve:

hug.

Leif:

Aw.

Steve:

Uh, it's okay. It's okay that you kidnapped

Steve:

somebody. It's okay. Come here. Bring it in, son.

Steve:

Now we're going to go try to find your sister that

Steve:

I chased off again. Then we went to find Jenny

Steve:

again.

Leif:

Juliet is visiting Ben in prison and is gleefully

Leif:

explaining how successful the plan has gone. Ben

Leif:

is suddenly shocked that Juliet would go so far as

Leif:

to drug Serena. Julia is rightfully surprised at

Leif:

his change of attitude now that she, too, lost

Leif:

everything.

Steve:

Ben looked different here. Was he, like, clean

Steve:

shaven or.

Leif:

I believe so. Uh, yeah.

Steve:

Ah. Like, he just looked.

Leif:

He looked cleaner. Defanged him? Yeah, from a few

Leif:

episodes when he was beating up some. Someone's

Leif:

dad just to send a message to Juliet.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, they beat up. But. But now it's like.

Steve:

Wait, but you did. Well, what? Wait, no, no, no. I

Steve:

just wanted you to ruin her life and get her

Steve:

kicked out of college and get all of her friends

Steve:

to hate her and. And make the entire world think

Steve:

that she slept with a professor.

Leif:

So, yeah, there's just. Yeah, it's clearly a shift

Leif:

to make Ben more empathetic.

Steve:

Right. Which I caught that. Oh, I caught that

Steve:

instantly.

Leif:

I fear for what. What that. That entails.

Steve:

No, I mean, it's. Well, no, it's. It. It is all

Steve:

bad news because we.

Leif:

Because I think he already predicted this at one

Leif:

point. What's going to happen?

Steve:

Oh, that. I mean, he's going to eventually get out

Steve:

and find Serena. I can imagine that they're going

Steve:

to end up together at some point, because that

Steve:

just makes sense. But like you said, they. They

Steve:

really defanged him here and they just. I felt

Steve:

like even in how they did his makeup, how they did

Steve:

everything, they made him look like this soft

Steve:

victim character who's been pulling the strings to

Steve:

this whole thing the whole time. And for Juliet to

Steve:

then be like, you know, fuck you, Deuces. Like,

Steve:

I've lost everything, doing all of this, doing

Steve:

this whole plan for you, and now you're going to

Steve:

be mad at me for drugging her. Like, fuck off.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Like, how is that the line?

Leif:

Yeah, I totally got Juliet in that scene.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Chuck and Blair are, uh, in his limo. Blair is

Leif:

doing a Dan Humphrey impression and nervous,

Leif:

rambling about everything she needs to do before

Leif:

leaving for Paris. Blair tries to take Chuck's

Leif:

hand, but he pulls away and says that she was

Leif:

right what she said last week. They need to be on

Leif:

their own for a while to figure out where to go

Leif:

from here.

Steve:

Yeah, the way he was, like, I was there for

Steve:

Serena. And, um. But, uh, again, I actually really

Steve:

like this conversation too, how Chuck is like, you

Steve:

were right, we can't be together. I'm not upset

Steve:

that I got to see you today. It was great to spend

Steve:

time with you and get to be in your orbit, but we

Steve:

can't be friends, so I've got to go now. I thought

Steve:

it was great and also good, Blair, you should go

Steve:

find someone else by the end of this episode to

Steve:

partner up with for a little bit.

Leif:

As Juliet is leaving, she bumps into Howie, who is

Leif:

bringing a tray back to sit with Nate and Anne for

Leif:

a Thanksgiving dinner. At prison, Juliet tells the

Leif:

guard that she won't be back for a while.

Steve:

I didn't get Juliet's bump in with Howie and her.

Steve:

I don't know what she was trying to communicate in

Steve:

her acting when she saw them.

Leif:

So my read on it was that she does have real

Leif:

feelings for Nate.

Steve:

So I kind of had that too. That it was. I'm sad

Steve:

that I. Oh, there's Nate. I. There. There's the

Steve:

guy I had jumped, or there's the guy that got

Steve:

jumped because I dated Nate. And there's the

Steve:

family that I kind of wish I had. I kind of got

Steve:

all that. But you're also a sociopath. And I

Steve:

didn't think that was the best I've seen from

Steve:

Juliet. And I actually blame that more on writing

Steve:

than anything else. That I don't feel like there

Steve:

was a good communication there. That's probably,

Steve:

like my only thing in the episode that I was like,

Steve:

Jenny.

Leif:

Uh, goes to see Juliet, only to find her apartment

Leif:

cleaned out. All except Juliet's mask in the

Leif:

trash.

Steve:

All except, uh, for the evidence. Also, kudos to

Steve:

Jenny. When she knows that she's in trouble, she

Steve:

knows she's found out, and she could just go back

Steve:

to Hudson and forget all of this. She has an

Steve:

escape and it would make family time tense. But

Steve:

she can get out of this and just leave. And

Steve:

instead she's going to go confront Juliet. And

Steve:

kudos to Jenny for still trying to fix this.

Leif:

Uh, and we move into the epilogue. Anne and Nate

Leif:

are talking outside the prison. And Anne is happy

Leif:

that she came and gave Howie a chance. Looks like

Leif:

they're going to be a happy family again. Aw. Uh,

Leif:

and once again, the lowest security prison ever

Leif:

because he goes out. Uh, I'm just gonna run right

Leif:

back.

Steve:

Inside, go back in and say goodnight to dad. Well,

Steve:

and also, if you remember how Juliet's thing, it

Steve:

was just like there was a room that she was

Steve:

walking out with a check in desk and then a

Steve:

cafeteria of visitors there. And then she's, oh, I

Steve:

got this visitor's pass I'm going to throw out.

Steve:

But, like, it's just like, by the way they set it

Steve:

up, it's like a hallway that may have had metal

Steve:

detectors. Yeah, wouldn't have been hard to bake a

Steve:

file into a cake for your brother, Juliet. Yeah.

Leif:

Rufus and Lily are alone with a huge Thanksgiving

Leif:

feast. Rufus admits that Jenny had a part in what

Leif:

happened to Serena. However, Lily says if anyone

Leif:

is to blame, it was her. Rufus suggests packing up

Leif:

some of this dinner and taking it over to the

Leif:

Ostrov Center. Lily gets a text and says she has

Leif:

to make one stop and that she will meet him there.

Steve:

Now, here's the other thing with Rufus that upset

Steve:

me. So. He does rightly point out that he and Lily

Steve:

are diametric opposites in parenting. And then he

Steve:

ends it with, and we both have daughters we can't

Steve:

control. Hey, Rufus, maybe don't try controlling

Steve:

her and try parenting her. Which, again, I'm not

Steve:

mad at his parenting now, but you had so many

Steve:

missed opportunities to have an amazing

Steve:

relationship with your daughter, who would right

Steve:

now probably be paying for that apartment in

Steve:

Brooklyn with her fashion shit.

Leif:

Ah, Rufus, she fucked up.

Steve:

You fucked up.

Leif:

Jenny goes to the Waldorf penthouse and comes

Leif:

completely clean with Blair. Jenny wishes Blair

Leif:

luck in hunting down Juliet and says a final

Leif:

goodbye to Blair and the Upper east side.

Leif:

Afterwards, Blair pulls out her phone, um, to text

Leif:

Chuck, but thinks better of it.

Steve:

Yeah, I like this. With Jenny going to Blair,

Steve:

laying it all out. You know, what would be. What

Steve:

would Thanksgiving be without Jenny Humphrey? I

Steve:

like that they had that moment of and. And Jenny

Steve:

being like, you know, I like a game as much as

Steve:

anyone. Why would I be here? Why would I be here

Steve:

if I just lie about this? Here's who you're after.

Steve:

Here's what you need to do. Thanks.

Leif:

And I do like that her final scene is with Blair.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Is this it? Is this is it? And then we

Steve:

never see this actor again. And, yeah, it was a

Steve:

great ending for her. And I do, too. I love that

Steve:

that really brings that relationship full circle,

Steve:

that it is no longer animosity that Jenny now is

Steve:

leaving, sort of more on a positive note for

Steve:

coming clean and getting everything set in motion.

Steve:

So that's. That's good.

Leif:

Juliet is meeting with Lily, who hands her a check

Leif:

to stop leaking stories about Serena.

Steve:

Um, was that a hundred thousand? Was that a

Steve:

hundred grand?

Leif:

I don't think it was that much because it was a

Leif:

monthly check.

Steve:

Yeah, I know, but I. When I looked, I tried to. I

Steve:

didn't pause it, but I tried to just gaze, and I

Steve:

thought it looked like there was at least five

Steve:

zeros on.

Leif:

I thought it was 5,000.

Steve:

Oh, that's it, Juliet.

Leif:

I mean, monthly. That's a pretty good salary.

Steve:

I mean, it is, but it. But, uh. From the Vander

Steve:

Woodsons. I'd go at least five figures.

Leif:

Forever. Like, perpetuity.

Steve:

Yeah, Yeah. I mean, set me up with a trust.

Leif:

Yeah. At that point, they'll just take you out.

Leif:

They'll put you in prison just like your Brother.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Okay, Juliet, we will do that for you.

Steve:

Orchestrate a bus accident.

Leif:

Nate is leaving the prison and the guard says he

Leif:

was happy to finally see his mom there today. And

Leif:

then it will really help Howie's chances at

Leif:

parole. Nate is instantly suspicious.

Steve:

Yeah. God damn it, Howie. God. Uh, damn. And it's

Steve:

so funny because I. It seems so innocuous. Oh,

Steve:

yeah, he was really glad to see your mom. And

Steve:

yeah, he might be getting paroled, but it's like,

Steve:

how are you, dick? Are you using your kid to get

Steve:

back with your wife to get out of prison early?

Steve:

Oh, God, Nate, uh, you had two great parenting

Steve:

moments this season. Let's. Let's hang on to

Steve:

those, bud, because I feel like things might get

Steve:

worse for you.

Leif:

Chuck is once again alone in his suite shooting

Leif:

pool. He gets a pie delivered from Blair, which

Leif:

causes him to smile.

Steve:

Yeah, the note. Just because we can't be friends

Steve:

doesn't mean we aren't. It was beautiful. He was

Steve:

happy about, uh. Was a great way to cap that off,

Steve:

too. It's the reminder that we can't be friends

Steve:

right now. But we love each other and we are

Steve:

always connected.

Leif:

Vanessa is walking alone and gets a text from

Leif:

Jenny letting her know that Blair knows

Leif:

everything. Everything. Vanessa calls her mom and

Leif:

lets her know she's coming home.

Steve:

You like, every bit of this is your own fault. You

Steve:

could. You could have earlier in the episode not

Steve:

listened to Juliet because you are fucking family

Steve:

to these people. And you could have gone and been

Steve:

like, jenny and I fucked up. We're sorry. Or you

Steve:

could have just not been super jealous of Serena

Steve:

and gone to class. So, Vanessa, you fucked up.

Steve:

Yeah. Go home to your mom and commute to NYU from

Steve:

New England.

Leif:

Vermont. Yeah, Go to New England where your mom

Leif:

can be horrible to you.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah.

Leif:

Shit all over you. Constantly.

Steve:

That, uh, well, not constantly because she's also

Steve:

going to ignore her a lot of the time. True. And,

Steve:

and, and choose her interests over her.

Leif:

Lily shows up at the Ostrov center where Rufus,

Leif:

Eric and Serena are waiting with the probably now

Leif:

ice cold Thanksgiving dinner. Serena is not very

Leif:

enthused, but slightly enticed when Lily reveals

Leif:

that her one stop was to get diner fries.

Steve:

The diner fries and the Gossip Girl starting new

Steve:

traditions. Because we've seen this at the end of

Steve:

the past. Was it all. Was it every one of them? Or

Steve:

is it just the first two? Were there diner fries?

Steve:

The end of the third one? First one, it was

Steve:

Blair's. Blair at the diner with Lily and Eric and

Steve:

Serena.

Leif:

Yeah, I don't think there was ones in the third.

Steve:

Maybe I don't remember how the third ended

Steve:

because. Yeah, but I do like that they had because

Steve:

they've always been diner fries in the diner, you

Steve:

know, So I like that.

Leif:

Dan, alone in his loft, is surprised to see Blair

Leif:

opening his front door. She apologizes for not

Leif:

trusting Dan that there was something more going

Leif:

on. She knows that Dan loves Serena and uses that

Leif:

to recruit him to help her hunt down and get

Leif:

revenge on Juliet.

Steve:

I'm so excited to have Dan and Blair paired up in

Steve:

a team up. An honest to God fucking team up. I'm

Steve:

so excited. I hope it ends with them making out.

Steve:

Do Penn and Leighton ever date?

Leif:

Not publicly at all.

Steve:

Okay. I wasn't sure if they also had a thing. I

Steve:

thought I had heard that at some point.

Leif:

But yeah, I mean, that would have been kind of

Leif:

weird if he dated her after Blake. Yeah, that

Leif:

definitely would have been awkward.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

But I think that Pen's definitely, uh, her type,

Leif:

judging by her husband.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah, completely.

Leif:

I don't know if Leighton is Penn's type though.

Steve:

Oh, I don't know much about his wife.

Leif:

Well, all three of his serious girlfriends. So

Leif:

Blake Lively, uh, Zoe Kravitz, and now Domino, who

Leif:

he's married to, are very extrovert.

Steve:

Oh, okay.

Leif:

This is what. Although they all definitely look

Leif:

very different from each other, he doesn't have a

Leif:

physical type, but, uh, I think he's got a

Leif:

personality type. Mhm. Anyways, this is what

Leif:

Gossip Girl has to say to end the episode. During

Leif:

the holidays, we call customary patterns of

Leif:

behavior tradition. And like any pattern, once

Leif:

established, they are not easily broken. Sometimes

Leif:

we convince ourselves we can start new traditions,

Leif:

only to realize it wouldn't be a tradition if it

Leif:

changed other times. Even things we never realized

Leif:

were traditions, become one. But the best kinds of

Leif:

traditions are the ones that bring people together

Leif:

even under the most unlikely circumstances. Come

Leif:

together right now. XOXO Gossip Girl. What is

Leif:

coming next?

Steve:

I mean, Blair and Dan team up to find Juliet, get

Steve:

to the bottom of this. I love that. Uh, if they're

Steve:

teaming up, I can almost imagine a Nate, Chuck

Steve:

team up because both of them need something to do.

Steve:

So I would like to see. I can imagine also that

Steve:

this is going to be a non judging Breakfast Club

Steve:

adventure in some way. I feel like Blair and Dan

Steve:

would rope in Nate and Chuck, but I feel like

Steve:

it'll be Blair and Dan as the focus with the other

Steve:

two doing other things stuff. I predict that

Steve:

Vanessa is going to be out for a little while

Steve:

until she can clear her name or get some kind of

Steve:

reconciliation. She also tends to be written out

Steve:

for episodes at a time. Uh, was she ever full

Steve:

cast?

Leif:

Uh, she's the main cast.

Steve:

She's main cast, but she's just not in every

Steve:

episode.

Leif:

I.

Steve:

I, oh, and I see how he getting out of jail, uh,

Steve:

how he's going to get out of jail, and it's going

Steve:

to seem great for Nathaniel at first, and it is

Steve:

going to be a shit show. And also, at this point,

Steve:

Ben is going to be getting out of jail pretty

Steve:

soon, and I feel like there's going to be a Ben

Steve:

Serena team up at some point and. Yeah, and I feel

Steve:

like, uh, Because I feel like the thing that

Steve:

happened there, if I remember correctly, it was

Steve:

like an accusation, an alleged thing. Anyway, I

Steve:

think I foresee a Ben Serena something happening.

Leif:

So I have homework for you and anyone else who's

Leif:

following along with us.

Steve:

Okay.

Leif:

One of the major storylines of the second half of

Leif:

the season here is inspired by the movie When

Leif:

Harry Met Sally.

Steve:

Oh, okay.

Leif:

So everyone go watch When Harry Met Sally, because

Leif:

that storyline starts next episode.

Steve:

I've seen When Harry Met Sally a few times. A few

Steve:

times, actually. It's actually, uh, one of those

Steve:

movies that Robin loves, and Robin isn't a movie

Steve:

person.

Leif:

It's one of Penn's favorite movies.

Steve:

I may have seen it in the theater. I may have. I,

Steve:

I, of course, we, you know, you know my, my

Steve:

stories with movies. I saw it at a extraordinarily

Steve:

inappropriately young age for that. It's not as

Steve:

bad.

Leif:

There's nothing really that bad. It's more that

Leif:

you would probably find it boring as a kid.

Steve:

Yeah. And a lot of stuff went over my head. The

Steve:

orgasm in the deli went over my head.

Leif:

I forgot about that scene.

Steve:

Yeah. Oh, that is like the such a big scene in the

Steve:

movie. But, yeah, it's because it's their, um.

Leif:

Speaking of impression, Leighton does a very good

Leif:

Meg Ryan impression.

Steve:

Oh, does she?

Leif:

She definitely channels her in this storyline.

Steve:

Oh, interesting. Which is also really interesting

Steve:

because I've often hated Meg Ryan. I've never

Steve:

really liked her much as an actress. I've always

Steve:

found her to be too. Meg Ryan. Uh, yeah, I think I

Steve:

loved her in this. I loved her in When Harry Met

Steve:

Sally. I never found her to have a ton of range

Steve:

outside of Sally. I thought that Sleepless in

Steve:

Seattle really was the same. Not the same movie,

Steve:

but a very similar one. Is Sleepless in Seattle,

Steve:

the Affair to Remember ripoff? Yeah. Okay. Yeah.

Steve:

Uh, because then there's also the you Got Mail,

Steve:

which was also. I didn't actually watch that one

Steve:

because it just felt like another Sleepless in

Steve:

Seattle When Harry met Sally.

Leif:

It is, but it's worth watching for how creepy it

Leif:

is.

Steve:

That scam so hard because it's Tom.

Leif:

Hanks basically using his knowledge of talking to

Leif:

her online to make her fall in love with him.

Steve:

Right. I think I might want to watch it just, uh,

Steve:

through that lens.

Leif:

Also, a young Dave Chappelle. Is it at.

Steve:

Oh, interesting. It's funny because back then I

Steve:

could see myself watching this movie and being

Steve:

like, this guy's got moves. Just like, oh, he is

Steve:

slick.

Leif:

He is a player.

Steve:

Yeah. But I mean, me in 2000, 2001. I could see me

Steve:

then being like, oh, uh, yeah, this guy's got

Steve:

game. And unironically thinking that now, of

Steve:

course, I'd be like that. That's fucked up.

Leif:

Okay, let's go ahead and get into segments. Hello

Leif:

there. Peabody here. And this is the Wayback

Leif:

Machine for traveling through time. And this is my

Leif:

boy Sherman.

Steve:

Speak German.

Steve:

Hello.

Steve:

Good boy.

Leif:

Uh, this week in Fanom, we jump in the Wayback

Leif:

Machine to travel to the fan forums from 2010

Leif:

overall pressure. It was a great episode.

Steve:

Yeah, sorry, Steve Pig.

Leif:

He Peter pants.

Steve:

I'm just going to say when the episode that

Steve:

dropped yesterday with Alice Callahan. Toward the

Steve:

end when I had to use the bathroom, I actually ran

Steve:

all the way upstairs to the second floor of my

Steve:

house because I didn't want to pee six feet away

Steve:

from the microphone and catch the old. Excuse me,

Steve:

special guest. Thank you so much for being here.

Leif:

He could have just beaded your mic.

Steve:

Okay, okay. You think when your bladder is that

Steve:

full leaf.

Leif:

There was a lot of pre episode chatter about the

Leif:

DS kiss because it was shown in the promo trailer.

Steve:

Oh, okay.

Leif:

So they're excited about that and they're also

Leif:

confused about Ben's sudden onset of morals.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. I actually turned to Robin, was like,

Steve:

is that the same actor? I was so thrown. She's

Steve:

like, yeah. I'm like, yeah, it is. It was

Steve:

completely thrown. No, that crosses a line.

Leif:

More love for Dan than usual.

Steve:

Earned.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Ah, hard earned love.

Leif:

And they were intrigued by the implications of the

Leif:

final scene because of the implication. Yes. And

Leif:

this, uh, is actually a direct quote from someone.

Leif:

As usual, Vanessa can go die in a fire.

Steve:

What's so funny about Vanessa is that she used to

Steve:

just suck for being there, and then she decided

Steve:

to, like, actively participate in sucking. I also,

Steve:

once again, really want to point out that none of

Steve:

this is A slight to the actor, I think the actor,

Steve:

I think Jessica, I never say her name right.

Steve:

Scholzer.

Leif:

Not even close.

Steve:

Not even close. I think that Jessica is phenomenal

Steve:

at portraying Vanessa. I think her acting is

Steve:

usually really good. Just playing such a shit

Steve:

character.

Leif:

Let's get into episode grades. Like I've been

Leif:

saying this whole time, great episode. Even the B

Leif:

storyline of the Nate story I was actually good

Leif:

for once. So yeah, the directing was good, the

Leif:

acting was phenomenal. Especially Penn and uh,

Leif:

Kelly Rutherford. So yeah, I gave this an A. Yeah.

Steve:

And we also had the whole gang together a few

Steve:

times. We had all of those things, those boxes

Steve:

that we love to check. I gave it an A as well.

Steve:

This was, this is probably my favorite episode of

Steve:

this season and I, I'd put it top 10.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Easily maybe top five episodes that we've done so

Steve:

far. Uh, I mean Thanksgiving, all four of the

Steve:

Thanksgiving episodes might be four of the top

Steve:

five. Mhm. They're so good and they just, they

Steve:

make it meaningful.

Leif:

Moving into stockwatch, going up for me, I had

Leif:

Dan, I had Eric for being a supportive brother

Leif:

even. Uh, I wish he would have talked to Serena a

Leif:

little bit more. I had Jenny going up for coming

Leif:

clean and getting the right people on the case to

Leif:

get revenge.

Steve:

Leaving on a high note. Yeah.

Leif:

Juliet is. Her plan succeeded and she's getting

Leif:

paid off for it. So yeah. Going up.

Steve:

Mhm.

Leif:

Think it's going to come down.

Steve:

Crashing down, but yeah, yeah, yeah, it's not. You

Steve:

take it while you got it.

Leif:

How are you going up? Because it seems like his

Leif:

plan's working and I actually gave Serena an up

Leif:

because she went through a rough thing, but she's

Leif:

kind of dealing with it.

Steve:

Now and taking accountability even though she

Steve:

didn't do anything. Yeah.

Leif:

So that's it for going up for me though.

Steve:

Yeah, I'm giving, uh. So the same Dan, Eric, uh,

Steve:

Jenny for doing the right thing, leaving on a high

Steve:

note, Serena for getting her shit together or, you

Steve:

know, taking this accountability. Howie for having

Steve:

this scheme. Juliet for her scheme working out.

Steve:

I'm also giving it to Ann for having a moment of

Steve:

good parenting to Nate. It doesn't happen often

Steve:

and Anne wasn't terrible. So I'm going to give it

Steve:

to Ann for this one and yeah, I think I'm going to

Steve:

leave it at that. I was tempted kind of for Rufus,

Steve:

mostly because of Matt's acting, but then Rufus

Steve:

himself with the hugging Dan, the forgiving Dan

Steve:

really made me mad. Yeah.

Leif:

So for me, going down, not a lot. Uh, I had Rufus

Leif:

going down because. Yeah, he was just self

Leif:

righteous and then instantly forgiving dad.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And telling his daughter that good things. She

Leif:

left and.

Steve:

Yeah, maybe you shouldn't have come back.

Leif:

Uh, I, uh, also have Ben going down because. What.

Leif:

What the hell is that? Yeah, and I had Nico down

Leif:

because he was kind of a dick about Serena and it

Leif:

seems like he's getting schemed by his dad.

Steve:

Yeah. Did you say Lily?

Leif:

No, I kept her neutral because she did end the

Leif:

episode on a high note, I think. Okay.

Steve:

I was. I'm leaving Rufus neutral. I am giving Lily

Steve:

the down. I'm. I'm this. Ben is going down for me.

Steve:

Nate is going down for me because he's getting

Steve:

played by his dad. But I'm leaving Rufus neutral.

Steve:

But I am going to send Lily down. I feel like she

Steve:

needs a hit to the ego that she got a big ego hit

Steve:

today that I think she needed and got knocked down

Steve:

a peg or two by Dan and I think she needed that.

Steve:

And I'm going to take her stock away for it.

Leif:

Uh, not too spoiler, but she's going to take some

Leif:

pretty big ego knocks in the future.

Steve:

Well, good, because she needs them. Lily might be

Steve:

my favorite character on the show. Lily is, I

Steve:

think, the most consistent character on the show.

Steve:

And I feel like especially she has the most moral.

Steve:

She's the most consistent morality on the show.

Steve:

It's not a great morality, but it's consistent. It

Steve:

is. We don't let things bother us. We just let

Steve:

money solve the problems. And that is how that is

Steve:

the Lily Vander Woodsen way. And she does mental

Steve:

gymnastics to justify it a lot of the time. And I

Steve:

love that about her character, but she needs to

Steve:

get knocked down here and there. But here's the

Steve:

best outfits from the last episode we've seen.

Leif:

M on to best outfits. For me, fashion was not

Leif:

really stand out this episode. But since it's my

Leif:

last chance, I'm gonna give it to Jenny for her

Leif:

little gray and white outfit with the gray thigh

Leif:

high boots, the matching haute hippie rock bandage

Leif:

skirt, and the gray V neck sweater and a gray

Leif:

plaid coat.

Steve:

That's fair. Yeah. Like you said, not. It hasn't

Steve:

been great fashion wise this season. It's just

Steve:

been a little weaker. I don't think that I'm

Steve:

assuming they just don't have the budget that they

Steve:

did before. But having said all that, I'm going to

Steve:

go with Chuck. I liked his suit better than I

Steve:

liked pretty much. There was a lot of subtle, cool

Steve:

fashion things like Dan's leather jacket and R.A.

Steve:

rufus's sweater looked nice, but I think the only

Steve:

thing that really stood out was Chuck's suit. So

Steve:

I'm gonna go with that.

Leif:

That is it. For segments, do you have anything you

Leif:

would like to plug this week?

Steve:

I suggest people watch Wayward on Netflix. I don't

Steve:

know if I said that last week or not, but it is,

Steve:

uh, it's a show about the trouble teen industry

Steve:

from the early 2000s and it's about couple of

Steve:

girls who are put into a wayward teen facility.

Steve:

So. And what? Meanwhile, a cop is investigating

Steve:

it. It's not based on a true story, but it's based

Steve:

on true scenarios that, uh. Check it out. It's a

Steve:

fun watch. And other than that, you can find me on

Steve:

TikTok or Instagram @ Steve Marchon M A R C H I O

Steve:

N. You can also find me on Bluesky at the Weed

Steve:

Wizard. And other than that, don't have any gigs

Steve:

or anything coming up. But in about a year I'll be

Steve:

in a movie called Best of this. Hopefully. We've

Steve:

been shooting so well for me.

Leif:

I am going to recommend the show Californication

Leif:

because it is basically an AU version of Dan and

Leif:

Serena, this version of their characters. Serena

Leif:

never comes back to New York. So because of that,

Leif:

uh, Rufus and Lily never reconnect and Lily just

Leif:

stays a cold, heartless tyrant. But then when

Leif:

Serena and Dan eventually meet after high school

Leif:

and Serena gets pregnant, Lily cuts her off and

Leif:

they move to California to adapt one of his books

Leif:

Steve:

actually watched it. I think I started it years

Steve:

ago, but only watched like one episode and then

Steve:

didn't get into it. Maybe I didn't. I only think

Steve:

I'm thinking of a different show.

Leif:

It's like a lot of Showtime shows where the first

Leif:

few seasons are really fucking good and it kind of

Leif:

falls off a cliff.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Leif:

Be back next week to Talk about Season 4, Episode

Leif:

11 the Townie. The episode description reads,

Leif:

Blair and Dan join forces to track down an MIA

Leif:

Juliet. Chuck begins to suspect Lily isn't telling

Leif:

him the full truth.

Steve:

Nice. So it's Chuck and Lily, which I love their

Steve:

relationship, so that's really cool. I'm assuming

Steve:

that it's also Juliet related, so I'm hoping that

Steve:

that's the whole truth that she's not telling that

Steve:

Chuck is in on this investigation. But I do love a

Steve:

Chuck Lilly team up. The Townie Is that from the

Steve:

Ben Affleck the Town? Is that what we're Blake

Steve:

Lively with Blake Lively. Oh, so another movie
